Well...for a round to "crack" it has to break the speed of sound. Sub-sonic ammunition does not. The suppressor(or silencer) reduces or eliminates the report (boom) coming out the barrel. This makes the firing of a round virtually silent (hence..silencer).

The use of a weapon like this would give the Japanese "plausible deniability". The projectile used needs to be scrutinized by ballitic tests to determine what type of weapon the bullet was fired from. The test could determine the calibre of the weapon. Further, the lands and grooves on the casing could be used to determine the barrel and probable manufacturer of the weapon.
To continue, a rifle bullet being fired would have been heard on the tape. A sub-sonic pistol round fired from a weapon equipped with a suppressor would not have been heard. The round fired, though accurate, would not have enough penetrating power to pierce the vest. The reason sub sonic rounds are used is to eliminate the "crack" from super sonic (rifle) rounds, to prevent the report of the rifle.

He is using a lv2 stabproffvest with no plates I know this because I own one just like it, he would have had no chance if any bullet hit him. Not all rifle ammunition is armor piercing. For example, 7.62 nato round (.308 Winchester) is a standard sniper rifle round. It would not pierce a level 2 vest.

Seems to be no doubt that the Japanese crew was willing to throw a grenade at the SS crew. Video shows that. Whether they followed it up with a sniper bullet seems like a mute point. They already proved they were willing to use explosives. I haven't heard any accusations of the SS crew using explosives (limpet or sea launched mines) to destroy or sink Japanese ships. If the Japanese crew was willing to do that, does it matter if they followed up with a bullet?

If you trawl back some 100's of pages there was a discussion. At the time I did a little research. SSCS members had some more info' which is how I know that they are illegal to use for civilians and that Japan has them. Also, there was a police investigation which concluded, but nothing at was ever said on the matter which makes me even more suspicious.

Well...for a round to "crack" it has to break the speed of sound. Sub-sonic ammunition does not. The suppressor(or silencer) reduces or eliminates the report (boom) coming out the barrel. This makes the firing of a round virtually silent (hence..silencer).

The use of a weapon like this would give the Japanese "plausible deniability". The projectile used needs to be scrutinized by ballitic tests to determine what type of weapon the bullet was fired from. The test could determine the calibre of the weapon. Further, the lands and grooves on the casing could be used to determine the barrel and probable manufacturer of the weapon.

To continue, a rifle bullet being fired would have been heard on the tape. A sub-sonic pistol round fired from a weapon equipped with a suppressor would not have been heard. The round fired, though accurate, would not have enough penetrating power to pierce the vest. The reason sub sonic rounds are used is to eliminate the "crack" from super sonic (rifle) rounds, to prevent the report of the rifle.
Weapons of this sort are typically found in military andlaw enforcement special ops units.

Not only was the shot possible, the shot was easy.
The range was less than 100 meters, and when I was a sniper, we zeroed our weapons at 300 meters. My snipers and I could hit a one inch by one inch target easily at 100 meters.
A marksman (note i did not say "sniper") firing pistol ammunition out of a carbine could make that shot. The projectile from the vest appears to be a small pistol round that mushroomed on impact.

You may find it interesting to know that although the IWC regulates whaling, they have no jurisdiction or legal powers to enforce such regulation. Membership in the IWC is completely voluntary.
Just like how any country can join and leave the United Nations. They're under no obligation to join or stay.
Whaling is sustainable, the facts to prove it are right in front of you if people look deep enough but it's not socially accepted in some countries and so people say no to it.

He is using a lv2 stabproffvest with no plates I know this because I own one just like it, he would have had no chance if any bullet hit him. If he'd really been shot he wouldn't have just stood there. In season 2 they showed the whalers using rifles to shoot the whales. Those rifles would have cut through his cheap vest like butter. Why didn't he lift his fat shirt and show the red mark a bullet impact would have made?? @bleaCh96734 Actually, having spent a considerable amount of time in the military, I know quite a bit about snipers. As I said, I wasn't saying Watson WAS shot at by anything, I was simply saying that the way this was presented was not evidence that Watson was NOT shot at by something.
Not all rifle ammunition is armor piercing. For example, 7.62 nato round (.308 Winchester) is a standard sniper rifle round. It would not pierce a level 2 vest.

@ iaio11051982 + uberbreakfast the entire clip posted elsewhere on youtube clearly shows the ss crew disregarding repeated warning and were in fact the first ones to throw grenades.

Hey genius why dont you show the whole video clip? bonehead the guy you show is throwing a flashbang granade(which is a police and army tactical weapon, what is it doing on a research ship?), a few seconds later you con see a sailor on the japanese "research" vessel, dressed up like SWAT FIRING A WEAPON towards the sea shepherd! the only concession I can make to you is that we have no evidence of him aiming directly for the captain! but he did have a weapon and he did fire against unarmed people

Are you maybe jealous about them, because they do have people that listen to them, and nobody wants to listen to you ? Seems to be no doubt that the Japanese crew was willing to throw a grenade at the SS crew. Video shows that. Whether they followed it up with a sniper bullet seems like a mute point. They already proved they were willing to use explosives. I haven't heard any accusations of the SS crew using explosives (limpet or sea launched mines) to destroy or sink Japanese ships. If the Japanese crew was willing to do that, does it matter if they followed up with a bullet?

No we are not, that was a flashbang grenade. We did not see the rest of the clip. However, there is no conclusive evidence from the footage taken that he was shot, outside of the aftermath. It could be staged, or one Japanese sniper is one helluva shot.

Youre assuming that the flashbang and the bullet came from teh same place. That explosion between the ships is a flash bang grenade and has nothing to do with a bullet.

And its obvious that you havent seen the gun that the Japanese fired. It was likely not a pistol round, but rather something from a rifle. If you watch enough of hte videos on youtube surrounding this event, you will hear the Japanese captain (or his translator) say that if they Sea Shephard doesnt change course they will be FIRED UPON. Then Captain Watson ends up with a round in his vest? Coincidence? Only in fairy tale land where the Japanese seem to live.

It is called Tramenal. It what is projected from the explosive material. There could have been metal in it and most likely was propel at high speed. It happens all the time. The Road Side bombs are a good example. the Second is a simply grenade.

That was a m84 Stun greade burst charge casing fragment. It's more obvious when the so called Captain dislodges the fragment from his shirt..it's round like a dime and the same diameter as the m84 outter fragment retarding case.
