  • Brilliant. Makes complete sense and has helped me a lot. Thanks Sam.

  • one of the best clips on youtube. great explanation because it is about physics applied to golf to teach. This IS my problem in a nutshell. Thank you Rod.... Sydney Australia

  • im one of those players that hit DOWN on the ball wuith forward shaft lean THEN flip afterwards...what drills would i need to do to fix this....

    thanks again great video

  • Thankyou Sam - I have been at Golftec for 8 mos. (using this thing called the punisher) - to cure my flip - and you got this to me in 6 minutes - wow. Keep up the excellent work - I am truly grateful for pro/better players that share their knowledge in constructive ways - you have a gift for this, and I am appreciative. I just need to keep my spine angle better and not lift up in the shot as I try to get my left shoulder to keep turning up . . . thanks again Sam!

  • Folks don"t worry about your shoulder turn... you have it down ! In fact the golf swing is relatively simple and your boby is capable of repetition. The only thing that you have to sustain and work on is the pressure of right index finger on your shaft in the downswing only . Without it change sport or keep paying....

  • I am not confused at all. It's confusing to people who have little knowledge of the swing and are trying to improve.

  • peejay3 is an idiot. This is an EXCELLENT description of the filp and how to stop. The physics analogy is spot on. Thanks, this is by far the best tip I have ever seen to help with my flip problem. I have focused so much on the wrist action that I haven't given the left shoulder action any thought. Will definitely try it out. It's too bad that when someone doesn't understand something, they become an instant all-kknowing arrogant expert like peejay3

  • This video shows exactly why students do not improve, get confused, resign themselves to mediocrity, often quit the game.

    Nothing of value here. NOTHING.

  • @peejay3

    Wow!

You obviously are a superior human being. Nice comment.

  • @samgouldengolf It's just that there is nothing here to help the student understand the swing or play better. It's confusing and does not address the problem.

  • Comment removed

  • @peejay3 You are obviously not listening to what he is saying!!!! it's the left shoulder and upper body STOPPING that causes the flip. I watched something you uploaded mr peejay and that video is confusing with a bunch of over the top mechanical @#$% for people to overthink what they are doing. Mr. Goulden is not telling you what you want to hear. Open your mind!!!

  • @peejay3 Thats quite a negative way to say you're confused. Why didn't you just say...."I'm confused"?

  • @peejay3 No, no, no, the only and main cause of flipping ; no matter what is the loss of pressure of shaft in the right index finger in the downswing ! Without it, you're keeping golfers in a slavery state...... So to all of you golfers out there keep searching in that matter... don't give up because this is the EPITOME

  • @peejay3 Sorry i was not respondind to you and you were right about this vid nothing in value. My response was addressed to the author of vid ooops Regards

  • @peejay3

You are right and wrong at the same time. . . . more WRONG though.

If you can follow Sam's physics lesson - he has well explained the physics of swing dynamics, but for most people, the just need to understand that the goal isn't to HIT a ball, it is to SWING the handle of the club . . . .if golfers can get the rotational qualities of a good pivot and always swing through to a full finish, they will accomplish all of the the PHYSics so well described by Sam here

  • It is amazing how accurately he describes my swing flaw here. After reviewing this clip several times and comparing it to video of my swing, I made the change. Now I can feel myself driving through the ball but the standing up habit is hard to break. I have MUCH BETTER ball striking now. Thank You very much helping me Pro!

  • @raidr4lyfe So glad to help!

    Keep up the practice!!

  • Thanks or the response.I'm playing a pretty decent game at this point after picking the game up after a 7 year layoff.Beofre I was able to blast a 7 iron 17518,now just about 155.At the driving range those numbers were ridiculously higher. It seems what you are promoting is as close to how I use to hit for distance that I have seen,Any other pointers send them along I ,ove this style of swining

  • With the left shoulder as the axis what is the role of the right side in the downswing? Also should we not release the hands into impact at all? Also what is the grip pressure when using this method?

    Thanks Great stuff

  • @secretogolf I grip it with a fairly strong left hand. that's what keeps it locked in place. A weak grip will tend to roll more on the take-away resulting in the face opening. The right side is passive in this motion/swing pattern. Releasing the hands is something I avoid at all costs. This type of motion works best with a strong impact. The compression line must be extended as long as possible.

  • Sam, this video is worth its weight in gold. I've tried to stop flipping for years...I thought I was stopping my hands at impact so I would try hander and harder to keep my hands moving which only exacerbated the problem. It never occured to me that my shoulder had stopped moving. No instructor had ever known how to correct my swing because my impact position looks good, the flip occurs immediately after. I can't wait to try this at the range! Thank you!

  • @ckmegatron Thanks! I'm glad to help! Feel free to post a video comment and I'll take a look at your swing for free! Good luck! Check out my other videos!! I made hole in one #4 the other day using the concepts I discuss in the Square to Square swing video

  • Nice job, Pro!

  • Wow! I can't wait to apply this thought or movement of the left shoulder. I often raise up in posture. Always thought it was weight shift or release issue, never considering that it could be the left shoulder. I am more of a picker/sweeper of the ball with little or no divots on well struck shots. That is not something I need to change is it? I will report back after trying your instruction. Thanks.

  • @mpb1472 good luck with the square to square swing today! just remember to lock everything in at address and use the shoulder turn to move the whole swing. I usually feel a pause at the top too!

  • Great vid, will really help I think? Can't wait try it out. By the way I know loads about physics. Lol.

  • Awesome video, Sam. Thanks a lot! Very informative.

  • Hey Sam thanks for this video. I have been working on correcting my swing and it has been paying off. I have been hitting some really good shots and I shot my best round ever today!

  • @pdneuk It took me just 10 years to learn this piece of the golf swing. I found it by watching a youtube video from the Kahn academy. I just applied the physics I learned in the centripetal acceleration videos and found that it was directly related to the swing. It's so cool to keep learning new things about the swing and the game. Stay tuned for more on the mental game as I have recently started working with Dr. Joseph Parent, author of Zen Golf and Zen Putting!

  • I have studied TGM, worked with Haney, Hardy, Hebron, Dr. Joseph Parent and many others. I have found that to truly learn a repeating golf swing a player must understand the the physics of the swing conceptually and then learn to apply them in their own way.

Please feel free to comment or ask questions.

  • Great clip. I started late in life and after shoulder surgery I'm using this opportunity to re-build my swing from the ground up. A descending angle to impact is the whole ballgame - you aren't going anywhere if you're losing the flat left wrist at impact. Are you an adherent of the TGM school? I love what I see in the basic, then acquired, etc. approach. Would love to here your thoughts pro or otherwise. Thanks again.

  • Good. Remember the other keys are just as important i.e. swing path and angle of approach. Keep the flexion in the right wrist through impact and beyond. The face will point at the target longer and even appear to point up in the follow through.

  • Thats great info thanks for the help! I was actually working on making my shoulders turn more through the hit at the range this week and it was helping. This makes perfect sense so hopefully I will be able to post a new video soon that looks alot different.
