@Zoso709 Hi! Stupid YouTube won't let me post a URL, but search on Google for Landry Amps and you'll find his website! The maker (Bill Landry) lives in St. Louis too and I've gotten to know him. Great guy and killer amps!
@Zoso709 Ah, I thought you meant the amp! I bought my R8 at a Guitar Center, believe it or not. I got a super killer "keeper" Les Paul at a local "box store" (as some people call it.) I lucked out and found a monster! I bought it new, which is unusual for me.
@SgtThump Damn so lucky, the guitar centers near me have the most depressing variety of LPs. Digging your ton though dude. Would you think a Landry amp would be better than a Marshall JCM800?
@Zoso709 Check out my video of me comparing the best sounding JCM800 2204 I've heard to my old Landry. Very close. The Landry had a little more "highs", which made it sound a tad bit more open. But seeing how close it was to the best sounding JCM800 I've heard really opened my eyes. The Landry stuff really rocks.
Hey inlike your videos. I think we have similar taste in equipment because i have alot of the same gear as you. I wanted to ask your opinion on the landry amp. I know you have an electra dyne and so do i, but if you had to choose one over the other which one would you preferre? I'm asking because i'm considering buying the landry.
@skunizzi Well that's a tough choice! They really don't sound anything alike. The Landry is much more "Marshally" than the Electra Dyne. I find the Electra Dyne smoother with a more refined tone. I do love it, though, so don't take me wrong!
The Landry was just an all around killer tone that falls somewhere between vintage and modded Marshall tone. The Electra Dyne to me kinda has it's own thing going on.
hi! i like the tone of your reissue!i'm shopping for a les paul and i never possessed one before! i tried a dozen brandnew ,and used ones from 1998 to 2008 models standard ,traditional,ect..) with bursbucker pro , others with 57classic ,and some with 490-498,the most sounds very good but i find a 1998 's model i must admit that's the one who sounds the worst but i think make it installed bursbuckers PU on it may be( 1 and 2,or pro not sure) would you recommand it? thanks!
I've gotten pickier about guitars in recent years.
If you go back and play them again, try them without an amp. Take the pickups out of the equation and listen to how the guitar sounds unplugged.
Sometimes it's obvious when a guitar is just put together "right". All of the pieces just work together (wood, hardware, etc...) and the guitar actually vibrates or resonates.
It may be obvious which is the better guitar after doing that!
Dig the sweat pants! Do you wear those on stage, or do you have mean look'n black ones? Just being a dick. The image on this video is amazing. What is the lightest Les Paul they make? Traditional...Standard....Reissues...? Broke my colar bone twice in the same spot, can only handle the weight of Fenders but I would really like to get a Les Paul someday.
Find a chambered Les Paul to get the lightest possible. As far as I know, the Traditionals aren't chambered. But all of the 2008 and newer Standards and some Reissues are available chambered.
Yikes...11s. It hurts my finger tips just to THINK about 'em..lol. Does your SG have the 490/498 pups? So, they're the 30s in the cab then? Love that bend @ 2:41..it's my Fave note on the whole board & you play it with MUCHOS feeling there SARGE..(-)(-)
Ahhhh, a fellow Les Paul "connoisseur." Very nice guitars you have there.
I've owned a bunch of different Les Pauls from early '70s Customs, to a few Standards, and a bunch of Studios. I've been playing this R8 as my #1 for around 4-5 years now, which is a big deal for someone that goes through alot of gear.
I've never actually been "in love" with a guitar before until this one.
@SgtThump I use Curt Mangan Strings. They are by far the best i have ever used. i usuall use 10-52's on all guitars. im actually thinking of going to 11-54's. i love the heavy guages. i also just noticed that you reinstalled the burstbuckers. what made you change back?
I remembered liking the stock Burstbuckers when I got the guitar, but it's been a few years ago. I just wanted to try them again. Turns out I like them just as much or more than other pickups I've had in there.
The Fralins sounded killer, but were slightly bloated on the low end in this particular guitar. Not bad or anything, but I like how the BBs don't have that.
Also, the tone from the neck Burstbucker is one of the best I've heard!
awesome. are u going to be playing the landry next gig, I would like to hear it live with the band. the Q3 gives a really nice sound and image thanks.
Thanks. I wish the volume on the zoom was a little higher, but I do love the way it records.
I may use the Landry on the next gig (this upcoming Saturday.) I'm just so reliant on the footswitchable volume boost on the Egnater Renegade at the moment. I like being able to control that myself. Instead of relying on the soundman.
Put Bill to work right away on a 2nd master volume for that LS100!
Maybe its just my ears but the BBs sound less "full" and a little more fizzy than the Fralins did. Could also just be the recording difference or the amp settings.
Yeah, you're right. The Fralins had a little more lows/low mids and a little less highs/high mids. Not much, but a little.
That's actually a good thing too, because this Les Paul can get too thick with some pickups. I'm liking the BurstBuckers back in here now. They just seem like a great fit for this guitar.
I haven't used it live yet with the BBs. I'm curious to see if I still like them in that environment. I'm thinking I will.
Where did you buy this and for how much? I'm having a tough time finding this online for sale.

@SgtThump I'm sorry I meant the guitar...it just seems that R8's aren't all over the internet for sale like R9s or modern guitars.

you get bored of the same sound over and over.
you got to have variety to keep it fresh.
that means many guitars and amps
and NO cheap stuff..

Ahhhhh, they're not that bad! These .11s feel like .10s, since I'm tuned down a half step for the band.
My SG is the '61 Reissue and it comes stock with the '57 Classic pickups. They sound great!
SgtThump 2 years ago
what strings do you use?
kristofferpence 2 years ago
I use D'Addario .10s on the Charvel and .11s on the Les Paul and SG. Notice that I'm tuned down a half-step for the band I'm in.
My older videos have me using .10s on everything.

love that 58 Man. always wanted to get me one. Almost got me one about 3 years ago. it was a plain top, but had a lot of birdseye in it. Beauty
