If Lars had kept on learning and evolving his drumming style like hid did in the early years of master of puppets, he would have stayed ahead of most of the drummers of his era. However, due to his laziness, and his stubborness, he hasn't really progressed as well and as fast, like Dave has.

I've seen both play in their primes and actually met Lars in the street back in 1988 or '89 here in NYC. I'd have to say Lars was at one time among the top thrash metal drummers, but I'd have to say as of late he's gotten lazy. His playing during live shows has just fallen off unlike Dave or even Nico McBain. But he doesn't suck.

You can't really compare them, Yes, they're both trash drummers, but they approach differently their drum set. Lombardo uses a lot of double-bass and snare. Also, he can basically play just metal. Lars, has a larger music view. He can play pretty much every kind of music. He can play blues, ballads, rock, metal, name it.

Dave is undoubtedly the better drummer! But to respond to some peoples' comments about him being the better songwriter I totally disagree. As someone who used to love Metallica, I don't think he can write songs at all. It was always Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett (in that order) being the main musical creativity in that band, which is why Metallica has sucked since Cliff has been gone. Lars as a drummer sucks and is even out of time on a lot of songs if you listen closely.
