devşirme- This is already a topic that is being taught in Turkish schools. Everyone knows what it is. However even some Muslims pretended that their kids were Christians to make them a janissary. Janissaries knew how they were brought up, they knew they were not originally Turkish. But they considered themselves as Ottoman and 'Turkish'. Until the lack of discipline started to show itself among them they were a big force within the empire.

I love the Orthodox peoples but the maps shown are misleading or just wrong. Spain was mostly reclaimed from Islam by the 13 century. Only the small shrinking kindom of Granada remained until 1492. Also the Byzantine maps are misleading. Much of their lands in western Asia Minor and Pontus were recovered by Alexius Comnenus and held for two centuries at least(Pontus lasted much longer).

Janissaries knew how they were brought up, they knew they were not originally Turkish. But they considered themselves as Ottoman and 'Turkish'. Until the lack of discipline started to show itself among them they were a big force within the empire.
