@fallout3freak360 it's called force extension...if the lead has been out for awhile, and still has some gas left over, they'll give it to the second tanker that just got out into the AOR to have the extra gas out there as opposed to taking it home
Is this suposed to be thermal imaging? Seeing that the "IR" is marked, i would think so, but the planes, the moon seem to clear to being infrared imaging..does anybody know?
toddi1971 & btypirate - thanx guys for replying to my comment...i see what ya'll are saying...just seems that it is alittle freaky. looked at this again...the chase plane is flying EXACTLY the same glide path as the fueling plane...hardly moves at all...the plane that is refueling moves alittle bit, not much though...it's wierd how all three planes seem to be flying such similar glide paths..like they are locked together....still this is a fascinating shot...take care
@scales57 what is locked, is the camera, weather by radar or optically. This is the reason why it looks like the chase plane is flying same path. In reality the chase plane moves a lot. This is the reason why the moon seems to move. Of course the moon is fixed and the planes move. The angle don't change because the chase plane is far away.
0k, i'm a dummy, i know; but something about this doesn't seem right....the plane that the video is being taken from is flying EXACTLY the same as the planes refueling.....how is that? if anything, the moon should be stationary, and the planes should be moving across the moon....not the other way around! am i wrong?
@scales57 it's because the chase plane is very far away and the camera is zoomed in a lot. It's not turning like btypirate said, it's about speeding up and down slightly.

The moon appears large because the camera in the third plane, not seen, has a magnifying lens and we are seeing the moon magnified according to the strength of the magnification, ie binoculars are typically 7-8-10 magnification, I'm thinking this camera is optically stabilized so it may be 20-40-60 magnification, therefore the moon appears 20-40-60 times closer, as compared to 0 magnification.
@sanfranciscobay are you sure about this? You might be right, but shouldn't the scale of the objects be preserved? To this theory (I think) if you would take fe. a large photo camera lens like 600mm and take a picture of fe. tennis ball (small) and there would be another (large) object like an aircraft standing few miles behind the ball the plane should look enormous... am I thinking right?
I think it does. The IR pod appears the same as on other French Air Force video I've seen. The 2 Pilots in the IR pod equipped French jet are talking over intercom whilst they film the 2 USAF KC-10 tankers refuelling each other. During this, some English language radio traffic occurs. My guess is this is French Air Force taking part in a RED FLAG exercise in Nevada.

no, the aircraft taking the pictures is using a targetting pod that is locked onto the tanker.
It also looks like its flying in a loose formation some distance away from same tanker and has the FOV zoomed in high.
