15 years later, I am still crying for his mother. :-( When I was little, I had a tape of Babar in French... and I watched it over and over again... This cartoon was my childhood. Uvek cu ga pamtiti.<3
@Piriathy If I'd been in Babar's shoes, I probably would have cast the Thunderbolt spell. (And pray that I didn't run out of MP before the hunter was killed or retreated.)
This scene of death was the only thing I can remember from watching this as a child. I remembered how the sky and water went blood red... I think the trauma of the event may have encrypted it in my long term memory.
I've always wanted to see it again, the murder of Babar's mother was like a myth of legend in my mind...
@DesertRat22225 I always think its a little bit inconsistent for people to comment like this and then go on to support the beef and poultry industries by eating meat
@jikarta There is a huge difference between killing an animal to eat it's meat and stay alive and killing and animal for the sake of having a trophy. Saying you're against the farming industrial complex is one thing, saying you're against killing at animal to eat it is another.
@PatriceB82 True, but the act of killing an animal can be abhorrent in any situation if its presented in a cartoon like this one. Chicken Run was a good example of that. Don't get me wrong, I'm as inconsistent as anyone else. I love animals and eat them. Just pointing out how I think our species is a little sick
"Although something told me it would be a long time before I saw them again....."
They should have walked the talk by having a lot of episodes pass before Babar returns. Oh, say about 10 episodes. Or perhaps even waiting until the opening of the second season!
it's so sad that babar's mom died. it's just like when littlefoot the cute lil dinosaur lost his mom. but I wonder if Elephants are on the endangered species list?.
Whenever someone asks me why I don't like guns, I always list some practical reasons, but secretly all I'm thinking is,
"They killed Babar's mom!!!!!!"
FYI, I'm watching this with my cuddly Babar that I got on my 2nd birthday. I've never been more excited about a present, and I love him just as much now. I'm 20.
Best children's story ever. Many good life lessons.
i feels really sad for Babar cause he lsot his mother but she is dead.... *cries* i really so bad then my parent say ''why are you crying?'' then i said ''umm nothing''. really sad :[
I was really scared of the hunter when I was a little kid. I don't like the look of his face. In one other episode (I think it's the next one) Babar is having a nightmare about him and It was even scarier. It was night and a thunderstorm outside of Babars' window in Madame's house and that made the feeling even creepier.
This is so sad, its a horrible crime to kill an elephant. That was no hunter that killed Babar's mother, that was a cold-blooded murderer & he was pure evil!
Another, maybe even sadder scene is in Arthur J Kwack when his family dies. Nowadays they don't make scenes like that do they? They seem to think they're bad for children...
"i always cry when babar finds out his mom dies its so sad, it makes you think about why people kill other living beings "
well we USED do to it mostly for food and clothing. Then we invented guns and poisons that made it so easy that we got greedy and started to kill animals simply for parts of them (like tusks in the case of elephants) or because they were in the road.
But yeah, its a shame people can't value the life of other creatures the same as their own :C
thats really funny, because Im pretty sure thats NOT from the original episode, i remember it pretty well. Somehow it was inserted in there, possibly through the dubbing process?
Yeah, that is definitely different music. I just checked my recording of the HBO airing, and the original music was the menacing deep piano chords theme that was often used with the rhinos. They also enhanced some sound effects.
The new synthesizer music sounds really out of place, to me. I don't think they ever used anything other than classical instruments with any of the original score.
@sailorlum I agree, and I also checked an old VHS copy of this episode released in 1990 and it uses the same synthesizer music as in this clip. So it has been like that for quite awhile.
um.........u do no its just a cartoon, and still im pretty sure elephants lives aren't worth human lives, i mean people throw the "Phrase" burn in hell around alot these days but wow thats harsh.
Yeah, but its a kids cartoon, its designed to teach kids morals and ethics in a way they understand. That hunter took a life out of greed, without sparing a thought for the consequences, and thats a very bad thing to do, human or not. Do you think what the hunter did was right just because he was human and the victims weren't? Even if its not real, theres a lesson to be learnt there.
Haha, both of you are wrong. We have way too many humans anyway, more than 6.7 billion on this planet as of last count. We still have problems, like starvation and poverty, not to mention body image and racism/prejudice.
It's pretty sad that there used to be millions of elephants in this world, but now only 600,000 remain. Too much ivory and hunting.
I myself thought the elephant dying was very terrifying and disturbing, even for a kid's show.

Babar strikes the hunter's leg for 16 damage!
The hunter kicks for 10 damage!
Babar knocks the hunter down the cliff for 5!
The hunter fires his rifle at Babar and misses!
Babar places the stump - hunter trips for 4 damage and 5 seconds' delay!
Babar smashes and throws the Rifle.
The hunter runs away!
-end of battle- Babar gains 85XP and 2 skill points.
