It really depends on how you define think. If you mean does it get external cues from its environment and react to them, then yes cells "think". You could even say they have memory (epigenetics). However, if you are asking if they can consciously evaluate and make their own decisions, then no.
Doesn't look like he's "chasing" him. Looks more like the bacterium were "herding" it. You can see two of them "pulling" against them. It doesn't look like the bacterium is destroyed. But then again, I know nothing about such biological transmogrifications, nor this bacterialomological kung-fu treachery.
I'm sure you're right, but I didn't see it, and besides, isn't that irrelevant? All I saw was the behavior prior to it. I found that the most interesting thing about this video was at :07 . If the Neutrophil was "chasing" the bacterium, it must at the very least have the ability to chase two at the same time, but Occam's razor leads me to believe its the bacterium themselves play a significant role in, and may in some way even be initiating, the behavior.
Nice video even though it's old...this has probably been rattling around immunology undergraduate classes for the last 3 decades since the time of film projectors haha.
How come it can focus on only one target and completely ignored the other dancing bacteria at 0:11 (towards the right) who basically stuck it's tongue out at the neutrophil??
I think there are some bigger factors going on beyond hydrophobicity. The bacteria is definitely recognizing, via some cellular process (surface protein recognition of the neutrophil perhaps?), that something is trying to eat it.
I have no idea about the distinction between a neutrophil and a macrophage, but wikipedia probably has info on that.
It's all due to cell signalling. there is a peptide (formylated Met-Leu-Phe) which uses G-protein coupled receptors. This peptide on the bacterium signals the neutrophil for phagocytosis.
actually, the bacteria isnt secreting anything, if it was, it would just be asking the WBC to kill it. since bacterium are diff. organisms than humans, their bodies are coated with diff. proteins than the cells of our bodies. our immune system is designed to recognize anything that is foreign(coated with diff. proteins )and attack it. the neutrophils cell follows the the chemicals that are coating the surface of the bacteria. hope this helped.

interesting thought....do cell think?
87mathal 7 months ago
@87mathal Short Answer: NO.
zzzIdividedbyzerozzz 7 months ago
@87mathal What is thought? Neurons interacting.
Do cells have neurons?
No.
Unless the cells are neurons, then I guess they ARE thoughts. Haha.

Its a phagocyte not a Neutrophil!!!
TwiStK1LL 2 years ago 2
@TwiStK1LL: FYI it's a neutrophil is a phagocyte... there is no 'phagocyte' cell, it refers to immune cells that are competent for phagocytosis
monocatcn 6 months ago
its a process called chemotaxis, it responds to chemical changes in the "environment" and follows the "signal"
ddelward 2 years ago 31
You're saying it can "smell" the bacteria? Amazing :)
terlisimo 2 years ago
@ddelward Isn't it called phagocytosis?
xXSherviNXx 9 months ago
@xXSherviNXx phagocytosis is the process of ingesting, not the "chasing"

Haha, that is increbile! Is it hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic that drives the bacterium away from the neutrophil?
Also, how do you know it's a neutrophil and not a macrophage? Size?

How does the Neutrophil follow the bacteria? It obviously doesn't have eyes or a consciousness but this behaviour makes it seem as if it does
borgirdummu 3 years ago
the bacteria secretes some chemical that is foreign to its system thus attracting its attention which explain the chase.
