  • I had worse, my 286 had an Hercules Graphics Card with an Amber Monitor.

  • holy shit this looks better then modern warfare

  • @SpermicidalManiac1 Don't lie.

  • This IS real hell.

  • lol "emo girl" mode

  • I was dreaming about that back when others were getting Pentiums :-)

  • Doom 80's edition.

  • Wow! I didn't think someone actually port DOOM to CGA!

    But it looks almost unplayable...

I've also seen EGA and text version.

    Would someone try monochrome?

  • This is like Doom and Tron put together :D

  • Seeing CGA "colours" brings back some memories! I used to have an old IBM PC with a CGA card in it and what I don't understand about CGA is why are so many games and programs in 320x200 only in 4 colours? And why always black, magenta, cyan & white? I mean, I've seen some things running on that old CGA in 16 colours AND at 640x400, so surely if it can do 16 colours in "high resoloution" it would be able to produce 16 at 320x200 right?

  • @CoolDudeClem

Sadly, there's a reason. 640x400@2 colors was an extended mode found on AT@T XTs, a few other computers of the time, and some high-ticket CGA add-in boards (eg. Plantronics). It wasn't common enough for games to support. I suppose some CGA cards supported other wacky modes, akin to 800x600 Super Ega cards. IBM/cheap clone CGA? 160x100@16 (text or total hack), 320x200@4, 640x200@2. Tandy/PC Jr's CGA derivative could do 16 colors at 320x200, 640x200x4. All these modes? Puuuuke!

  • after seeing "ega doom" I immediately searched for this. I can't imagine how hard it would be to actually play doom in cga.

what other graphic types are there other than vga/svga and dvi (as those display in "correct" full color pallet).

  • Oh wow. I'd love to see Doom in monochrome.

  • Why do most CGA games use the Magenta palette but not he red/green one? Furthremore, how come few ever use hacks to get a custom third palette or take advantage of background colors?

  • @initvesa I just posted a version that uses the red/green palette and dithering. It is not a WAD, but a filter-converted video, which only uses the black, red, green and brown colors. (Also a few other combinations are shown.)

  • Ugly, but it's still easier to see objects and enemies than in Doom III :P

  • Yeah, I'd like to see someone get it to work on real CGA hardware! But I don't think it'll ever run on a native 8088 :)

  • Funny, but fake. This is not CGA. This is a CGA-palette in mode 13h. It won't work on a CGA card.

  • @EendjeKwak But the important part, is it shows us just how horrible it would have been. CGA had the absolute worst color pallete ever.
