I got my Chessie in 1977 or 79. I would DEFINITELY say, without a doubt, that U R doing a disservice to this dog to keep him in an apartment. BoJack of Burning Tree loved to be inside w/us but L O V E D the outdoors and the water especially. They NEED to retrieve, to swim. Mine would be taken to the bay on Long Island when it was solid ice, find a spot where there was a hole in the ice and want to go in! If I didn't know any better, this video is of MY dog, same looks, same everything....
We had a Chessie when I was a child. I love those dogs. They are loyal, protective, and all out fun. I hope to own enough land one day where my husband and I can own one.
Hi, I have a chessies staying at my house for a few weeks and he keeps on barking at night, do you use that bark collar on your dogs normally? is that something a chessies needs? or its just a matter of preference?
We are thinking of getting a Chessie, but we will live in a 2 bed apartment in a complex. We have outdoors stuff we can do in the area, but we are worried about a Chessie living in an apartment. Would this be a bad fit?
@Turkish20 - Couple things with Chessies; 1. Chessies are protective by nature so making sure they're socialized to people that will be coming and going from the appartment will avoid possible agressivness and/or barking issues. 2. Chessies (and any hunting/working breed) need daily physical exercise to be happy and good pets. If you're a runner/walker it would probably be ok. If you don't find time to exercise them, they'll find other ways to burn energy inside your app (not good ways).
Beautiful dogs! Enjoyed your video. I have a question for you. I have a 7 year old male Deadgrass who has lost his sight (diabetes). Just brought home an 8 week old Chessie female. He's annoyed and getting a little snappy with her. How did you get your 2 together? I'm fearful he's going to take her down with one bite.
glad you enjoyed the video. Suggestions, keep a very close eye on them when together, the older dog maybe be trying to secure his dominance, he'll need to know you are still the boss. 2nd, I've not dealt with a blind dog however he may be insecure with the new pup so he may not like all the extra attention this new puppy is getting. 3rd, I would make sure he gets plenty of exercise. take them on walks together as well to get them use to each other in a controled environment.
@nehpets75 Thanks for the suggestions. It's been a long time since I had a puppy and I've never had to introduce a puppy to an older dog. He put her in her place the other morning. He didn't hurt her but by the sounds of her yelping I thought he bit her. She was bouncing around trying to play with him. She now keeps a respectful distance from him. I'll take your advice and hope for the best
@kmikazekat I was almost in a similar situation few years ago. My advice: keep treating the older dog as your only dog. Lavish all your attention on him. For example, I used to keep my older dog sitting on my feet all the time while watching TV, constantly patting him to reassure him. I would let puppy do whatever she wants to do, but keep a reassuring touch with the older dog. Do rebuke him when he gets a bit snappy, but return to reassurance soon afterwards.
We have both a lab and a chessie, and they're equally amazing and wonderful, but definitely different! I would love to take our chessie to a dock, though - he love leaping off rocks into the river ... can't get our lab to jump - he always finds the easiest way to slip into the water!
You're right, there is nothing like a Chessie. Got my first in 1978--needless to say have had quite a few, but each is different in their own way. All loved, and missed. Nice video....enjoyed.
@kimmy123763 - Thanks for the comments. Labs are nice and probably a little easier to keep focused. . .but there's just something about a chessie. . . .

@lunaazulvt - chessies do have a great water entry. . .makes them fun to watch. . but a well trained lab is a thing of beauty as well.
