I'm pro colourization. Anyone who isn't is missing their common sense. The original black and white classics will still exist, and the colour appeals to a generation who can't get past the black and white, exposing great movies to a new audience.
While the actual colorization doesn't look half bad for the 1980s, the film doesn't look nearly as interesting in color. When you're watching it in black in white, it's more intriguing. Here it just looks very plastic.
I can deal with colorizing some things at times and to be honest it looks okay, but seriously movies like this and King Kong really suffer rather than profit from color. It's a Wonderful Life was okay too I guess but the fact remains that all these movies look better in b&w. It's weird to say but it actually shows more emotion and detail than color at times. Maybe it's because you're focusing more on the actors and story or something. It's just not the same in color because I'm distracted by it.
When Orson Welles heard that Ted Turner, Turner Classic Movies, was going to colorized Citizen Kane this is what he said, "Keep Ted Turner and his goddamned Crayolas away from my movie"
Yeah, I just watched this for the first time last night in the original black and white, great movie. The black and white really lends to the 'mood' of it all and the shadows and expression etc.
Black and white cinematography is an art form unto itself. You lose all of that when it's colorized. One thing that makes Casablanca a landmark film other than its dialogue is the cinematography. The contrast, shadows, etc...it's ruined in color. Just as many black and white films would be. Unfortunately, many in our culture are illiterate when it comes to film history and classic films. They think B & W is inferior. If so, how come the top two films ever were made in the 40s and are B & W?
I totally agree. I hate when people look at B&W films as if they were retarded or something. As if they didnt know how to make good movies. People think B&W movies were like an experimentation and then coloured movies were the 'real thing'. It's so not true. I'm 17 and I ADORE B&W movies, I think they were the best. This one, for example, is my fav movie of all time. And you're right, the two best films ever were in B&W and from the 40's (you're talking about Casablanca and Citizen Kane right?)
According to the American Film Institute, yes. Classic films are my favorite, though I'm not prejudiced against modern films either. I've got a few favorites of those as well.
It is inferior in some . Lucky for us this is not one of those cases. But the film Rebel Without a Cause has a lot to thank from it's beautiful colorization.
so that's what color her hair is! But don't color Casablanca, it's like Gone With The Wind AND The Wizard Of Oz in full black and white. No more ruby slippers. It just ruins it.
1. Can someone tell me why "The Sound of Music" is playing in the background?
2. This takes away much of the cinematic genius, making it color. Though she's a beautiful woman all around, it's just not the same effect looking in Ilsa's face at the end. Some scenes in movies just aren't made for color.
1. Hilarious! I suppose it's because of the dubbing, they couldn't find the original soundtrack sans the voices so they inserted a different music there.
What a travesty. The colour is like putting spaceships behind the Mona Lisa, the dubbing is like having William Shatner sing Mozart, and the Gone with the Wind music is like playing Funky Town at a funeral.
SHUT THA FUCK UP FAGm this is language is Persian bitch, and since ur some rootless bitch, u don care about a 7000 year old civilization neither there language bitch motha
I think the worst isn't the colour, is the languaje and background music that don't fit with the original emotions that the original film shows, there's no passion, there's no love, and when those flames are extinguished soul of the movie dies... in colour
I believe the color ruins this version. The black and white glossy hue of the original is the classic one that everyone should experience. The color is a distraction in my eyes, whereas the black and white makes sense of the character development and makes the world that they live in...dark but when SHE is around, it hurts him but he loves her at the same time. the light makes her look innocent, kind and most of all angelic.
The music in the background has added in dubbing to persian language (Iran) many years ago. I must add that it's dubbing is a masterpiece work (one of the best in Iran) but has some mistakes like this.
Precisely, there's a company that converts b&w movies to colour (the name's at the tip of my tongue). They use a new digital process, and they're extremely good at it. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch their version of "It's a Wonderful Life", it would spoil the warm feeling of nostalgia I feel when I watch it.
There was a period in the 80s when there were quite a few analogue colour reprocesses of classic B&W films, but more recently there's been legendfilmsDOTnet that do an excellent, nearly seemless job.
