is it just me or does he say "empty chairs and empty tables" instead of at? great singing, i wish my school would put on this production, ive always wanted to play jean valjean
I would love to have done this show as a freshman in highschool. That would be good but we did Godspell wich is even better but still. I love this song and this singer is amazing.
This is amazing for a high school production. Trust me, I'm a professional singer who actually performs with high school vocal programs as a featured soloist, this was really good. I also judge high school drama competitions(and most everyone else who does this song at any level) is that they OVERRAAAACT!
I couldn't disagree with everyone's acting comments more. Although he made a few acting choices I would change, it was nice to see the lack of overacting.
GREAT potential and BEAUTIFUL voice. If he keeps it up, his voice will flourish to rival many phenomenal voices we already know such as Marius and Micheal Ball.
I disagree with you on that one point. There is a large difference between being quiet and putting passion into it. This kids has a good voice but emotion must go into it. He just sang the notes. Level of sound doesn't effect the emotion needed.
I get the feeling that he has listened and watched other performances of this song, and tried to emulate them. On this song, however, I think he would be better off to just let loose with whatever passion is inside him. It is an excellent song, and you sing it beautifully. Just work for more power in your voice. Well done. Bravo!
I think he did okay, it's in tune and hits all the right tune without going flat but I think he lacks the power in his voice that you need for this songs. I thought that the "Phantom faces/Phantom shadows" (which is my favourite bit) was very weak as well as the "my friends, my friends don't ask me," was to spoken and not sang properly. I do think that if he works on the power he has a voice that can be well developed into a professional one.
wow...great voice. i know this song is hard to sing...nice job. i thought the orchestra was pretty good...compared to my high school's when we did les miz. great!
once again, the orchestra is dragging it down. a few week notes, a few times where he went into less dictated words. into a more common speech pattern than what is appropriate. but overall sounds good. i just had to scroll down cuz the green table, bugged teh shit out of me. if u guys had a better orchestra and technical crew, almost unstoppable then.
He had a lot of emotion in the verses which I loved, but his voice and tonality in some parts seemed a bit lacking. Do you have any videos of him performing and singing? I'm interested to see how he did this.
Actually, having been in the "industry" ... i believe that this young man is very close to making this song his very own rendition. Why fall back on the works of others, when his talent is obvious and his voice only needs a bit more work on volume? Yet overall, he'd have a reasonable chance for at least the initial audition ... not for the road version or Broadway ... but definately other for venues that would ultimately lead him to these destinations.
Again, not that bad. Marius is okay but the small orchestra is kind of bothering with some notes. Actually a larger orchestra is needed because with out the power of a large one you lose some of the effect of the music. You understand?
Great job! Although, if I'm correct, I believe the last line is "Where my friends" not "Now my friends". Overall, great job, although I agree he should've held out the notes longer.
Well, firstly, being the hapless girl I am I am going to say that the young man playing Marius is quite hot. Ahem, with that said and done- he has a rather nice voice also. Some notes he comes in too quietly and has some slurring; but I am impressed. As bill said, it takes skill to sing this song.
ehh, this was just okay for me. but only because im so used to michael ball's rendition in the 10th anniversary concert =p matt has a good voice, but like bill said, he should have held the notes for the full length and used the same 'lilts' in the song as michael ball did. but overall, not too bad =)
Joshua missed the mark a bit here. He should have held his notes for the full value of each measure, but his voice is solid and pleasing to listen to. I've performed this number several times and know how difficult it is... it requires a lot of stamina and beathing control. All in all it was a very solid performance.
@JoshBKJackson Is this a High School Production? If so, then not too bad. Not bad at all. Believe me, I've heard this song done in such a way that there were a lot more empty chairs at the end of the number than at the beginning.

although he does need to sustain notes longer, work a bit on diction and apply more passion towards the end but even so fantastic potential

This is vocally beautiful, but I hear no signs of sorrow or loss in his voice. Gotta work on that emotion, but the voice is great!

There is a bit of emotion in it. Not as much as it really needs. Very nice voice voice though.

I agree. Much more emotion and he is a bit of a flat voice. But he has a descent voice.

he sings it like i do. the only thing i would do is hold notes longer when they need to be held. he did a few correctly. overall he did very well.

It's a very subtle song. He could have made it bigger, but it was his choice to keep it quieter.
