  • @Nanea465 until maybe the 7th or 8th grade, i would say "death" instead of "deaf". It is the sound it makes at the end. I never saw "deaf" spelled out, and no one corrected me. I also had a speech impediment where I pronounced things wrong and it would be hard to talk. But yeah, it is just the sound, so I used to spell and say "death" instead of "deaf".

  • your amazing!

i want to learn sign so bad...how did you get so good....?

  • ah i love this! i think this partially is due to the fact that children mistake TH for F, i know i did until i was about 6 or so...but i do have to agree that after the age of 6 the death/deaf confusion is too much.

  • The death/dead comments might've been typos because obviously you are alive.

  • hahahahha my friends mom is deaf and she speaks all the time, she never taught her daughter how to sign so has to speak around her but when I go to there house I greet her in sign and try to use as much sign as possible and my friend doesn't understand why I do this and I just tell her I think its polite and my sister is half deaf but she never used sign language before.

  • Lol watched this vid like a month ago but I only knew like a couple words and gave up like in the first couple seconds I watched it again today and understood most of it really proud of myself lol

  • are you deaf? cuz i have friends that are deaf and i understand

  • i don't get the death/deaf thing. why would anyone confuse the two? O.o

  • @nanea465 i dont know.. i honestly DONT know.. people are crazy.

  • @allyballybabe i am amazed that people confusse the two. it's kinda silly.

  • So awesome!

  • @777tabbygi no she's hearing.

  • I can't stand when people say death instead of deaf!

  • Is your roommate deaf?

  • When I was little I thought it was "death." haha

  • @777tabbygi i hope ur kidding...

  • Comment removed

  • your so pretty! i hope your cold gets better! :)

  • O ok now I understand I was like wait how does she know what the song sounds like...but now I know:jj

  • For everyone still asking id refer them to your youtube "about me" profile where in the first paragraph you say "i am not deaf, i am hearing."

  • You should tell them, "Yes, I'm death but I left my robe at the cleaners. BTW, I hear your cholesterol is still way up there. I'll be seeing you soon!"

Naw, never mind, they probably wouldn't get it. ;-)

  • Are u even deaf ?

  • @MegaFloridagirl10 hm.. did you watch the vid?

  • @allyballybabe I kind of understand why she would ask that though. I want to learn sign language and I know the alphabet and numbers 1 - 10 already but I would love to learn more. But you never say if you are just very good at signing or if you are actually partly deaf. Even if you can speak. Not trying to be mean or anything, I am just saying what my thoughts were.

  • @FallOutGirlxTaylor My ears are 100% hearing.. My heart is 90% Deaf

  • @allyballybabe Well thank you for clearing that up. You are one of my role models :)

  • @MegaFloridagirl10 She just said she wasn't.

  • @MegaFloridagirl10 I think someone isn't paying attention in class.....LOL....

  • i like how you signed "deaf" super slowly

D.E.A.F XD you looked like you were about to clock someone.....i get it though. I'm completly hearing, but i have a deaf friend. and when someone comes round and says "shes death, right?"

it irks me to the fullest extent -_-

  • In my culture (Black), alot of people say Death, instead of Deaf, because Blacks used to be made fun of for messing up their 'th' with 'f'. So now 'we' (not me, I'm Deaf), try to keep the emphasis on the 'f' vs 'th'. President Kennedy did that when he said words like "Cubar" instead of Cuba, lol.

Also, do you know that you used the other sign for cold as in temperature, and not the sign 'cold', as in 'tissue wiping nose' to mean sick/cold. :-)

  • neat! when i watched this a couple of semesters ago i didnt understand it and now i do! nice to see some improvement when it always feels like there is so much more to learn.

  • she sounds like emma stone :)

  • i love learning languages! I've learnt english, vietnamese and chinese, and plan to study lots more, but never even considered learning sign language. thanks for introducing me to sign language through these songs :D makes me want to learn sign language too!

  • @Kamidee06 looks like you have only learned vietnamese and chinese, your english sucks.

  • @lightbrightdarklight I'm sorry, I forgot that people display only their best language skills on youtube -___- My english sucks? I'm a native speaker of english, but wonder why you feel the need to put someone down when all I was doing was admiring someone else language skills?

  • @Kamidee06 hes a troll! don't feed him

  • LOL, i was totally cracking up while reading/watching this!! i cant believe people ask if you are "death" haha, if you are death, dont come near ME!! i loved the "I am not dead I am alive" part!

  • Omg this is so funny y would people ask u if u r dead lol this made my day lol my fav part was wen u signed I am not dead I am alive that's so funny to me

  • HAHA omg. Are you death? Yes I walk around killing people because I am death

  • @Medicalphiliac ha. that's the same thing i say when people say that.

  • Lol i thought this was funny. DEATH and DEAF are not the same.

  • misconception and idiocy are two different things.

  • I was browsing through your videos and found this. This is kinda cute. In a sad way. Deaf vs. death? Oh dear. And hello, I'm really really new at ASL. I'm taking a course in ASL right now and it's been about a month and a half since I started signing. Heh, glad to say that I understood most of this video without reading the subtitles! Your videos are great, I'd love to see more of your work (especially since this helps me study so much)!

  • how well do you sing?

  • I kind of had to laugh at the Need for this..... Sorry.... but well done.

  • keep talking in some videos

  • I am your number one fan.. but.. are you deaf? :o

  • why do people confuse the two? deaf and death( perhaps they don't speak english and their accent make it hard to tell which one they are saying), i know this is true in my house for '-f' and '-th' words are both '-th' sound. but people can also be dum-dums and choose not to say the correct word. (you should be in bed resting, not making a vid) :D

  • oh my gosh! my brother in law is deaf and representatives from this college kept calling my sister asking to speak to him. she kept telling them that he is deaf and cant speak on the phone but told them to email him. but they didnt understand. they kept calling my sister until finally she said, "He's NEVER coming to the phone. he CANT HEAR you." so these representative emailed my brother in law, "we're sorry your death and cant come to the phone." IDIOTS.

  • @allyballybabe I bet its annoying that people always call you dead. Just like (but no treally) how Im croatian and people always say I am Pro Asian. Weird and not the same AT ALL

  • @FriendlyFunnyGirly Where in Croatia? I lived there before I moved to USA. What is your name? :)

  • She's not deaf at all. She's 100% hearing. I know this bec in her about me vid she said she started taking asl classes like 3 years ago might be more now I'm not sure

  • i have a question im not trying to be ignorant or anything im just a kid and i read all the comments so im a little confused still so your 100% not deaf? you can hear and talk but you like making ASL video for educational purposes right? nad just for fun right? o and BTW i like your vids

  • Haha ally I know exactly what you mean. When I go to school people always say your parents are death? (I am coda btw) and I always have to say they are DEAF not the grim reaper lol.

  • haha I love you even more now :)

  • my 1 year old cousin is teaching me how to do asl and so is my 21 year old cousin..it is really fun..

  • Haha oh my goodness! People can just be too much sometimes! I thought basic sign langauge as a speech in my public speaking class this sem. and when I was done one girl asked me if deaf people can read. I just starred at her for a moment before I could answer...but I'm studying to become an interp. and these videos are amazingly helpful! Thank you so much for uploading them!

  • gotta say that i think you are great and i really enjoy all of your videos! i wouldnt say that i am passionate about signing but i have had a real interest in it and would love to learn! any tips?

btw you are quite cute! =)

  • gotta say that i think you are great and i really enjoy all of your videos! i wouldnt say that i am passionate about signing but i have had a real interest in it and would love to learn! any tips?

btw you are quite cute! =)

  • lol wait, what? people actually ask if you're "death/dead"? my goodness... my faith in humanity just went down... like, if they legit didn't know, or couldn't say it, that's one thing. but just to be like "you sign things... you're death?" is just amusingly stupid.

  • omg i'm in ASL 1 right now (well, not this moment, lol) and i understood what you were saying!! yay! lol there IS A BIIIIG difference between deaf and death, that must get annoying.

  • hi, i just wanted to thank you for all these chatting videos, I'm learning ASL and these help me so much with receiving. thanks so much!

    Angie

  • This may be off the topic, but I just wanted to say that I'm a Hard of Hearing college student who is studying in Marine Biology. I hope to be a dolphin trainer. :-) Anyhow, for now, I'm paying my bills by working for Home Depot as a supervisor for the cashiers. So many customers ask how I get to work. HELLO! I DRIVE! They actually think Deaf/HOH people cannot drive! How sad! Only thing we are limited to is HEARING...we can do anything else if we put our minds to it!

  • Gotta love the internet and people who can't type XD

  • one time in SL class I had to make a presentation, and I was nervous, and I said I was going EARLY to a party, but instead I signed "naked" I was soooo embarrassed (they look similar if your hands are shaky and sweaty!

  • lol that was funny

  • lol ppl r real ignorant

and finally I hear u speak

  • Oh my! That is such a pet peeve of mine!! I have a co-worker who says DEATH when he means DEAF, all the time, and it's all I can do to not correct him EVERY time! Hahaha!

  • I'd actually interpret "are you death" as "are you death incarnate," or rather, "are you the grim reaper," which while fairly unlikely is still technically up for debate. I propose you make a video addressing this issue.

  • you should sign "fall out boy-grand theft" autumn its a very good song :D

  • wait so are u DEAF

  • No, it said in the video she isn't

  • AHHH you're wearing a dulles dolls sweatshirt. :) that's so awesome girl. i go to austin high school and i'm on the angels. in fort bend. :) i knew you were from houston, but i had no idea you were from sugar land! that's so cool! i look up to you sooo much. this is my first year taking an ASL class and i absolutely love it. i definitely want to pursue a career that has something to do with ASL. haha, sorry just thought you should know. :) you're amazing! and i absolutely LOVE your videos.

  • @ohhmeelayy47 haahaha. yay Dolls! thanks so much for watching!

if you ever see me in the SL, say hello!!

  • @allyballybabe i will, no doubt. :)

  • I just found out I am going deaf, Im only 15 and I just wanted to let you know that by listening to your songs that you sign I have learned ASL. Thank you so much.

  • Comment removed

  • haha thats awsome! lol, idk how people confuse dead and deaf, but i guess it is plausable,

anyways, you are amazing....i just found your videos and wish i could watch them constantly....keep it up

  • lol and you have a sense of humor..loves watching all your videos

  • @CSIDLED wtf? what a douchebag!

  • LOL!!! THANK. YOU! I am SO tired of people who say "death" for "Deaf." Like, seriously? Learn the word, people!

  • some people have a lisp so they sound the same..my friend kassidy does it all the time and its annoying.

  • I love your bids sooooo much and I learned alot sign language from you! Nut me no understand *tear* lol

  • LOL....I was a licensed terp for 32 yrs and I cant tell u how many times that happened to me. Oh the stories I could tell! I have watched many of your vids and think you have learned very very well. I recently posted my first video on youtube about newbies trying to "teach" others how to sign. Very frustrating. Not talking about you....you know what I mean I am sure. Just look at some of the vids of people who know five signs and post that they will TEACH you how to sign. Heavy sigh.

  • maybe they were asking if you are the grim reaper..)

  • LOL!

I've recently been taking it upon myself to learn ASL.

People can be so....I don't know, I don't want to say rude, maybe just uneducated? They don't know what they say is rude. But I thought you handled this great! And I enjoyed your sense of humor going about it. Thanks for you videos! I just subscribed =)

  • oh my gosh !! i know how that is... im an ASL II level at sandalwood but im in ASL I so like all these kids are like spell and say death instead of deaf! and like me and my teacher have like little side convos about like shopping and stuff so they are all like ummm what just happend? :p lol

  • are u single??

  • ummm im confused are u deaf?? i lik only saw 2 vids so far and im confused

  • Hah so I'm in asl classes and I told my sister I wanted to go to a deaf church (there's one by where I live) she said WHAT A DEATH CHURCH. I'm like no u idiot DEAFFFFF!!!! Her eyes opened wide she like ohhhh sorry. lol it was funny

  • I love your videos!

  • i just started watching your videos and i really enjoy them-great signing. now are you deaf?

  • no shes not deaf.

  • @singerbabee14 ...didnt you just watch this, NO Shes not deaf.

  • wow, was that really nessicary. no-it wasnt. ok-gotcha-shes not deaf. ok then. no need for this comment

  • Hilarious! xD

  • Death.........thats so funny lol :)

  • ok well I have a bone to pick too! My son is deaf and people always ask me if he can read braile uh no he's not blind!Sometimes I just want to say are you for real?

  • tell them yeah that buggs me too , at one time I was talking to a friend that is deaf we were at a football game and i hear 2 kids saying those are the death kids i turrned around and i said "by the way the word is deaf and i am not deaf i can hear you so that means i am not deaf" both of their eyes got wide it was funny

  • I love your videos. Awesome !!!!!!!!

  • When people ask me if I am death, I stop signing to my friend, turn and both say and sign, No I am no death, I am alive.

  • My god they still saying that death crap!!! Well ask them what do u call a person that hears you be suprise with their answer lol. Ask them 3 questions. What do you call a person that can't see? What do you call a person that can't hear? What do you call a person that can hear? You be shock how many people can't answer the 3rd question. lol

  • .... why would people be asking if you were dead??? That doesn't make any sense... lol...

p.s. you are very inspiring, love your vids, I'm trying to learn myself, just started like... yesterday... haha.

  • ANYONE who pronounces the word "death" in placement for "deaf" is ignorant of the fact..Its not a insolent comment..Its is fact.....It is unfortuante there are still obliviousness to the DEAF. Being deaf is not anything that is uncommon. Just because it is not majority does not mean it is not prevalent. So if you are ignorant of the fact you are to blame..The information is out there learning is essential in surviving.

  • In other words, she can talk and speak fluently, but may not hear as well as others do.

  • negative. i have excellent hearing. and i can talk and speak fluently as well.

i learned ASL from some friends of mine who are Deaf when I was in middle school. this is something I'm passionate about.

Doesn't mean I have to not hear as well as others. That has nothing to do with it! :)

  • Ah...misunderstanding :) Glad you know ASL though. I know very little.

  • @allyballybabe a internet friend asked me to hang out when i was in town i said ok and she told me she was deaf and i said ok she went quiet and i asked if something was wrong she asked if i was ok with that and i said ofc why wouldn't i be and she ignored that and told me its fine i can just use her phone to txt what i say i just laughed and said it would be an insult to use her phone to txt her when she was next to me so i spent the next week learning asl

  • @allyballybabe I congratulate you for doing these videos then :)

  • i am learning ASL in middle school it is my 2nd year and i love it. and when i was little i use to say death instead of deaf haha but i was little so oh well i know the difference now

  • I am a Deaf Studies Major. and every one thinks I say "Death" Studies Major. So now when I tell them, I sign DEAF-Studies-Major.

  • wow, people seriously ask that? That's really weird. Like is it a typo or something? I just don't get how someone could make that mistake, but hey...takes all kinds, right? lol I just heard that some kids today think Hannah is the capital of Montana, so...../shrug

  • I don't even understand how this is an issue... it actually kinda scares me to know that there is one person (let alone that there are many...) who thinks that "DEATH" is the word for being deaf. Oh my lord... It's frightening what this world is coming to... haha.

  • t9 gets it wrong sometimes... :(

  • huh?

  • Like t9 word on a cell phone. It starts auto-completing to "death" once you have put in "d e a"

    Or maybe that's just me.

  • Oh... gotcha... no, that happens... but people also speak the word "death"... so yah, no excuse for that.. haha.

  • grins.. dont you just HATE that, i grew up with that and it is FREAKIN annoying. You used a NICE word " Ignorant" to describe those kind of people. I wont SHARE my kind of word lololol. Ill be A NICE D.E.A.F GUY :-). NOT DEATH GUY , but D E A F GUY lol, feel better with your cold :-)

  • I absolutly HATE when people say "Death" Even if I correct them on it, they say something like, "yeah, okay, whatever, that's what I meant" something like that! It really annoys me. I understand if someone can't pronounce it, but blowing it off isn't helping. You can confuse people if you aren't careful. Hope your cold gets better.

  • hey, i was wondering how long did it take you to talk

  • well, i started talking prolly around one and a half years old?

is that what you're asking me?

  • yeah i think lol so you are DEAF right lol

  • No, she is Hearing and has studied ASL in order to become a DE teacher

  • Haha This is great. I remember when I was a kid, I would get so hurt when people would say, "Your parents are death?"

  • hahahaha!!! o my gosh kno!!!!! so annoy wen ppls say me.." you death?".. me say.." no, deaf... D.E.A.F" hav explain all time soo aggravate!!! haha but funny how ignorant ppl is.. haha

  • That has to piss you off

How does a grown person not know the difference between deaf and death?

    Just sad

Love your videos ^_^ I want to be an interpreter one day

  • it surprises me how many people assume you must be deaf to know sign language. Im in a sign language choir group called "Handprints" and my family and I are probably the only ones in it with hearing disabilitys (excluding my sister whom is compleatly deaf) and yet so many people we perform for that are hearing will try and ask us questions by writing them on paper assuming we are all deaf lol. Even though our group leader actually speaks and introduces us before we perform, its kind of funny :P.

  • "cold" as in the virus is signed kind of like you are rubbing your nose (finger and thumb in a kind of blowing your nose way)... not like the temperature is cold... just fyi ;)

And I used to get that all the time when people would call asking for my parents and I would say "they're deaf" and the person on the other end would say "oh I'm so sorry, I didnt know they had passed"

I was always like "dumbass" and hung up on them. People can be ignorant.

  • haha dats hilarious.... my sister answer fone for me if my friend try call me or random person not kno.... they always think me dead... hahaha so ignorant

  • yes, thanks for the correction!

  • could you do obsessed by mariah cary???

  • ... I don't think I've ever heard your voice before this video. XD

love your work. keep it up. :D

  • how much more clarificatin do you people need? she communicated the fact she is NOT deaf in 3 languages (ASL, Spoken English, & Written Word) hahahha wow... just wow.

  • i'm hearing impaired and people always say i'm "death". if i'm up and walking around that should mean i'm not dead.

  • exactly.

  • @TheBasemet Lullzz. I hope people stop calling you dead..

  • im confused, because in this video you said that you are deaf, but on your profile it says you are not deaf, you are hearing...??

  • I don't beleive she ever says that she's Deaf in this video. I believe that she is hearing and knows American Sign Language.

  • Comment removed

  • She is not deaf. She can hear, she is a deaf education major. Therefore she signs. But she can talk and she can hear.

  • shes not deaf..

  • I think you guys are taking it the wrong way. I think it's a joke.

  • why is this so hard for people to understand...SHE IS NOT DEAF OR DEATH

  • people are ignorant.

or just decide to NOT read the comments.

  • I have an odd request of you. I noticed that you have all sorts of songs posted in ASL. I'm getting married and I want to surprise my fiance with a song in ASL. The song I'm looking for is Do you want to know a sercet. By the beatles. I have never done sign before and I was hoping that you might be able to help me out. TY

  • really you get that??? Death = deaf?? Wow... people are strange

  • are you deaf?

  • When I was little I thought the word was 'death' for a 'non-hearing person'. But that was only when I was a kid. I think I even argued abut it with another kid who insisted it was pronounced 'death' and not 'deaf'

  • I am a teacher of the Deaf/HH in a public school. Often I will overhear students tell their friends that don't know my job that I teach the "death' kids. I just smile and tell them that my students are not dead. They are very much alive. They just don't think about what they're saying. Thank you Ally for taking the time to educate others. You're signing is awesome!

  • I remember being asked if i was death (verbally) by people back when I used to sign well...You'd think maybe they'd write it or something...? It always made me think of the scene from Monty Python's "Meaning of Life." Salmon anyone?

  • That was hilliarious! You signing skills are as well as a deaf person I could see as if why people could get confused!

  • you can speak really wonderful, which has me thinking? because ive only seen a few of your videos, are YOU deaf? or are you just really interested in the deaf culture and maybe want to do something career wise with it? im just wondering and not being rude at all. my cousin is deaf and i think it is very important that people know, he is just like everyone else. so please, answer my one little question...?

    thanks, Jessica.

  • Go to her home page, she talks all about it

  • Glad you did this, I was getting annoyed at people making comments saying you must be deaf or unable to speak! Also, I'm HoH and my speech isn't 100% clear. When I say I went to DEAF camp as a kid (summer camp for deaf kids), people think I say deaTH camp!!! I get tired of explaning myself, so I understand :)

  • hmm. I have never heard of the "deaf"/"death" confusion. I think it's odd that some people ask about that, or are they just trying to be crude? I can understand young kids mistaking the words, but most people on YouTube aren't young kids...

I love watching your vids Ally, they're pretty cool, plus I love country music :P. You must be really close to your certification, no? You're obviously really good at Sign. Thanks for the vids, we all appreciate them, hearing & Deaf :)

  • i think they're not trying to be rude. They don't know how to pronounce deaf, so they get confused on saying death. I have deaf friends and people do say stupid shit.

  • stupid people. ignore them... if i have time to upload, yes i would

  • my sister is deaf, and everyone would ask me if she was "death" and they would ask me if i was "death" too back in elementary school. no... i am not...

  • see what i mean, people don't realize what they were saying, so they would say death(death means your dead, obvious you are alive).

  • an excellent, insightful video.

  • Ally you are an incredible young lady. Your videos are amazing! I am embarrassed that I do not know how to sign and I do have contact every once in a while in my line of work. My answer is usually to have the person smarter than me to write their message down on paper. Do you recommend any programs/tutorials? My work schedule is crazy and I can't enroll in a structured class or I'd miss half of them. Thanks! And keep up the inspiration!

  • Hi Ally... you have a nice voice girl!!! So I think you should make the ASL and sing at the same time... it would be nice so that we could hear your voice too... Keep on ASL'ing... ;c)

  • This is humerous to me and I'll tell you why- I have an 11 year old boy that is deaf and I have a 9 year old daughter that is hearing. My son has went to deaf camp for the last 4 years and my daughter got to go last summer for the first time since she is a sibling of someone that is deaf. But she calls it death camp. I had to explain to her also what the difference is. I just thought it was funny and I always wonder what people thought when she told them she went to death camp!
