That's ironic, terriergal. It seems to me that the Sermon on the Mount was all about how to live one's life and not about what to "believe". In the single greatest sermon ever given, Jesus did not tell people how to be saved, gave no altar call, and did not present "the gospel" as you perceive it. He just told people who wanted to join Him how to live as citizens of His Kingdom. Jesus is unquestionably the beginning of salvation, but there is a whole lot more in the Bible than just John 3:16.
The church is full of tares due to being fed a 'gospel' of love (LAW). Telling people to love more is not going to make the goats behave like sheep of the Lord's flock. The church needs the gospel too, to remind them of what Christ did for them. Instead we are given "how to" sermons (LAW) which does nothing to create the faith that gives rise to good works and sanctification. (i.e. the ability to love others). Tell us about Jesus! Please! Stop preaching so much law to the church!
There are so many good points in here, yes it is convicting, but there is so much CRUCIAL Scriptural information left out.
"Roger" needs the gospel just like those that abused him. Tony makes the mistake of saying that he wasn't a Christian because of what he did. So he falls into the same error that non Christians rightly criticize Christianity for, making it about actions only. Christians do sin horribly sometimes. So does the world. One of them is forgiven in Christ, the other is not.
@terriergal Its not about action only, but true faith should inspire acts of love and service, and the fact that so many Christians' faith inspires hate and intolerance speaks volumes about their faith.
