Without Johnathin Harris and his wicked sense of humour "Lost In Space" would have been a thirteen week wonder. Irwin Allen once told him "I see what you're doing to Dr. Smith's charachter. Keep it up." (Oh joy, oh BLISS!)
Loved it when Smith would insult the robot...IE "you mechanical misfit" , im sure there were plenty better examples. Also got a kick out of when the robot played the guitar... with his crab hooks...aahhahaha
I second that emotion! What a hilarious clip! I miss the late great Jonathan Harris. What a gifted actor! And his "Dr Smith" character has to be one of the world's great villians...and the funniest! Sad that he's no longer with us. The pain..oh the pain...
@JubalCalif Haha! Thanks for that rewind on Dr. Smith's lamentations "Oh, the pain, the pain..." It never ceased to amaze me when I was a kid how Dr. Smith could irk me so by making a complete disaster out of every rescue, recovery or escape plan they ever had on LIS. Perhaps Dr. Smith knew he would be prosecuted for treason, sabotage & attempted murder if he ever got back to earth. That's something I never thought of as a kid.
Loved reading your comment! Well said & well put! Dr Smith was always hoping to return to earth but WITHOUT the rest of the Jupitier II crew so they couldn't squeal on his nogoodnik activities. I think Zachary Smith had his doctorate in proctology...if the show had lasted long enough, maybe he'd have been able to find out if there really are ring around Uranus. Dr Smith's treachery & sneakiness were exceeded only by his cowardice & laziness! Thanks again for your droll remarks
Many comments have been made about the Robot's voice in this clip. Bob May, the man inside the Robot, did the voice on set. Dick Tufeld, the Robot's on screen voice, was dubbed over Bob's. Since this is a blooper, Dick's voice was never dubbed in since this didn't end up on screen.
it is all billy[smith-mummys] fault. he pulled another "twlight zone" mummy eye's job.
notice that if the robots head had sprung up, instead of the arms he would have been a jack in the box robot, just like lil' billy's victim in, yes,"the twilight zone". watch out for them bug eyes !
You bellicose bumpkins had better give this comment 100 "thumbs up" THIS INSTANT! I refuse to work with you no nothing ninnies without proper sustinance. Penny dear, would you mind fetching me some of your dear mother's delicious and remarkable repast for your poor friend Dr. Smith? I'd get it myself but my back is simply a disaster area.
@kaduisaui Not the original voice, that's for sure! Dick Tufeld was the original, and he's still alive to this day. My guess is that this voice was provided by the operator inside the suit, so he could sync the lights and arm movements. Then, Tufeld (who was really to old to wear that hot, cramped thing -- not that he ever did) would dub his voice in later. Since this was a blooper, there was simply no reason to dub it.
@racookster Excellent!! I sort of had the same idea emerging in my mind but I needed to post something fast enough to regret it later. Those are the rules of Youtube.
@kaduisaui Thanks. Anyway, yeah, unless you're talking about something like the Muppets, puppeteers and voice actors are almost always two different people. But somebody has to deliver the lines to give the other actors their cues. It makes sense for it to be the guy in the robot suit. He's probably wearing a microphone so Mumy and Harris can understand him.
Tuefeld provided the voice, but it was BOB MAY in the suit. Tuefeld never was in the suit. Also, the voice is a prompter for the actors. Tuefeld did the voice over later..
Hahahaha look at that Billy Mummy after all these years, and Jonathan Harris .... dear old viper #LOL .... we all just loved these characters ... we were the lucky ones to have grown up in the era of Beverly Hillbillies and such like. Such an innocent time. Ahhhhh (sigh)
@fearguis yeah i actually knew that fact, but i also recall seeing him in one of the deep space episodes. I loved Jonathan Harris, I knew it was his voice in a bugs life, apparently he was in a toy story too (cannot remember which character he played in that) Billy played the good hearted kid so well in lost in space episodes and has a fascinating story to tell of his life growing up alongside some real greats of TV. Also he was a close friend of James Stewart - his auto-bio would be fascinating
@MrDoublehappy - An innocent time of space pirates on Lost in Space, space hippies on Star Trek, Batman was campy as hell, Ginger & Mary Anne jump - started many young boys into puberty from Gilligan's Island, but we loved 'em all. They were a refuge of sorts. Always found the Brady Bunch a little TOO squeaky - clean, though.....
@knoxvilleguy2 :D Peticoat Junction, Green Acres, The Andy Griffith show, Voyage to the bottom of the sea, Land of the Giants, Here's Lucy, Gun Smoke, Bonanza, The Wonderful world of Disney, The Partridge family, The Mary Tyler Moore show, yeah we had a great old innocent time growing up against the backdrop of lolly television .... ahhhhh and yeah the Brady's were a bit straight but loved them all the same and just adored the remake. #LOL
@knoxvilleguy2 How could we leave out the Walton's? How about the Bugaloos, HR Puffinstuff, Hatsville, the Monkees, yeah being a kid was a great life before the space invader machine came along and corrupted our little minds for 10cents ..... thats when I started drinking, having sex with too many strangers and smoking weed, night clubbing and ahhhh... i can't remember that part very well hahahahahahaha
Land of the Lost, The Archies, Josie & the Pussycats.....
I grew up ( sort of ) read my 1st Playboys, started reading Stephen King, Ralph Ellison, & learning protest songs about Vietnam. I saved myself for " Ms. Right "..... Several times. ;}
I wish I had one of the original collectibles from the series. Put it on eBay..... Maybe not get rich, but get a sizeable chunk of beer money. I'm still kicking myself for letting an old Spider - Man poster get ragged & moth - eaten.
BTW. Gold Key Comics had a series called " Space Family Robinson " that was loosely based on LiS, or vice - versa. All those issues, gone.....
I love you Daddy!! I miss you so much!!! I know you brought so much to people with the Robot but, you brought way more to me! Thank you for being the best Dad anyone could ever have!! I'm so proud that you are mine!!
aww dr smith was amazing. im 21 and unfortunatly never really got to see alot of episodes. im not even really sure if its on tv right now and the hulu online episodes wont play in england. id love to watch them all some time
@derangedband Try w w w d o t Fancast d o t com, and see if that works for you. They have Lost in Space, and a multitude of other TV programs and movies to watch for free.
@edwong3 aww thanks for the suggestion but its run by hulu again and they wont play here. i couldnt even see it in the dvd store -- i could always book a holiday all the way to America and spend my entire time watching lost in space :D
rainlori, btw, just so you know...the bottom part of the Robot came off and my Dad could walk around and move in any direction he wanted to and often did but when he did he had to carry all of the weight of the Robot on him which was very heavy! It was the part of the Robot that they called "the bermudas"...there is alil interresting fact from the show.
@thevisitortjn2 , no, my Dad ( Bob May) was the one who did the voice in this and he is indeed inside the robot! I clearly remember when this was made and I can see his hands and his voice is very clear to me...it was a really fun day between them and they had a blast doing it!
That is a very funny video! I remember when they did it. That is my Dad inside the Robot, he was the Robot & he did all the singing & laughing for the show although his talking voice was dubbed by Mr. Dick Tufeld, a sweet man but for this, it was all about my Dad, Billy & Jonathan, they always had such a blast when they were together. I loved the cast spending time together because there was always that kind of laughter between them! May my Daddy, Guy & Jonathan be laughing together in heaven!
I miss that show Your fathher was great . My father Abe Lincoln told me he never wanted to go to Fords Theater. I still regret telling him he looked good in that top hat!
Thank you for the comment about Dad being great but, what did the rest mean?? Were you joking or are you saying that you don't believe that he is my Father?? Thats kinda funny! Well, for the record my name is Deborah May, I am his one and only Daughter, the youngest of his two children from his almost 50 year marriage to my Mother and I am dam proud of it! RIP Daddy, I love you!!
Hi Deborah. I remember the TV GUIDE article in the mid 60's that profiled your dad inside the robot with his head exposed so you could see his face, and yes, it mentioned Dick Tufeld doing the voice. CONTINUES
@bobmayslilgirl I just saw a You Tube clip where your dad is standing by, while a comedian is helped inside of the robot. After a couple of minutes, still inside of the robot, he says to your dad, "you must've needed a job very badly" and your dad along with the entire crew starts cracking up. That is a very funny clip. Appears that Bob had a great sense of humor. You must have had a very interesting childhood. CONTINUES
@bobmayslilgirl Bob and Dick did a great job fostering charm and personality into that character. There must have been many difficult days over 3 years of spending countless hours inside of the "costume" under hot lights and technical demands. Nicely done, Mr. May.
watched that show when i was little now my youngest boy hes 9 likes to watch it every night before he goes to bed on hulu i got that robot sitting on my dresser the best TV robot ever!!!
Both "Star trek" & L.I.S were my most watched & favorites of all time. My parents wouldn't let me watch L.I.S because i would have nightmares after viewing, so when it came on (only 2 channels in black & white in those days in the UK) they put me in the kitchen till it was over, So i started digging a secret hole in the kitchen concrete wall, (under the kitchen table of coarse) after 1 month i nearly got through, but it was discovered & i got whacked hard. Just shows how much i loved L.I.S haha
The voice for the Robot was done by Dick Tufeld in the tv and movie versions of Lost in Space. He's still alive at age 83. you can Google him and read his story. His voice could also be heard in other Irwin Allen tv shows. Amazingly Tufeld was the narrator for the old "Zorro" tv show, which starred Guy Williams years before Lost in Space's debut.
Dick Tufeld as the Robot's voice was always dubbed in later, in much the same manner as James Earl Jones' voice was dubbed in as Darth Vader over Dave Prowse.
Yes, I kind of liked it when they had the robot say, "Danger, danger, danger Will Robinson," with the robot swinging its arms around. There was an episode where the robot went up against another robot and I remember that robot on another show somewhere. I only have Season Three, Volume two, with episodes: Target Earth, Princess Of Space, Time Merchant, The Promised Planet, Fugitives In Space, Space Beauty, The Flaming Planet, The Great Vegetable Rebellion and Junkyard In Space.
Bernie, the episode you're thinking of with another robot is "War of the Robots" from the 1st season. That was my very favorite when I was a kid. When Will found that rusted robot for the 1st time (while creepy music played), chills would go down my spine. That robot was also a mute guard on a prison ship in the 3rd season. To my knowledge, it made it's 1st appearance as "Robbie" in the movie, "Forbidden Planet".
Seems like many guest stars on Lost in Space was on twice during its 3-season run.
What a sense of humor! Can you hear Bobby laughing inside the Robot costume after his claws fall off!! I hope you and Jonathan are having one big laugh up there in space..RIP
Show was great with amazing cast...but ruined by last season getting too silly and focusing only on Dr. Smith and Will Robinson. My favorite episode was when Will's Dad turned evil and was about to kill Will.
Yes, I have this on the first season DVD, and I remember watching when I was a kid, and am 50 years old now, watching the Lost in Space TV show on TV that is, and I also have the Lost In Space movie and there are a couple of the original cast on it, like June Lockhart for example, who was the school principal instead of Will's Mother and I can't think of his name at the moment, but he was also on the movie too, bringing the "new pilot" to the Robinsons.
Ok, I'll have to watch the movie again, but I did see where the "principal," on the movie, who was June Lockhart, where the "Will" charactor gave her "gorilla arms," and who was it, Mark Goddard I think, who, in the Lost In Space movie, was the person who brought the "new" or "replacement" pilot to the Robinsons before they took off.
i think your correct lol if i remember all of the characers from the original show except for "dr. SMith" and the original "will" returned for the movie
I think there's a small similarity in that both Dr. Smith and Gilligan were "bumblers" I think the term is...Gilligan would get the others into trouble and so would Dr. Smith.
LOL....and let's not forget doddering dunderhead, mechanical misfit, mechanical murderer, neanderthal ninny, cowardly clump, gregarios gremlin, rusty Rasputin, and blithering bumpkin! Dr. Smith had a million of 'em, poor Robot!
Angela Cartwright is English born, but Jonathan Harris was born in New York. There is a prety cool vid on YouTube called "Special Feature: Jonathan Harris" in which Mr. Harris is giving a speech at a convention and he himself says he was born in New York City.
Didja notice that when you didn't see the robot "rolling" he was actually walking. Looks like this isn't a blooper. Maybe he just ate Yoda. Good clip. Thanks.
Bob May was never the voice, he was the man inside the suit. Dick Tufeld did the voice. Since this is an outtake, the voice was not yet dubbed in by Mr. Tufeld.
I stand corrected, kwebster62, thank you. I actually realized my mistake awhile ago but forgot where I left the post! LOL. Thanks again. Lost in Space Forever!
It looks like a Star Trek tricorder is hanging out of the robot's arm.

BernieLJ77 3 years ago
Bernie, the episode you're thinking of with another robot is "War of the Robots" from the 1st season. That was my very favorite when I was a kid. When Will found that rusted robot for the 1st time (while creepy music played), chills would go down my spine. That robot was also a mute guard on a prison ship in the 3rd season. To my knowledge, it made it's 1st appearance as "Robbie" in the movie, "Forbidden Planet".
Seems like many guest stars on Lost in Space was on twice during its 3-season run.

Show was great with amazing cast...but ruined by last season getting too silly and focusing only on Dr. Smith and Will Robinson. My favorite episode was when Will's Dad turned evil and was about to kill Will.
showtuneful 3 years ago
Yes, I have this on the first season DVD, and I remember watching when I was a kid, and am 50 years old now, watching the Lost in Space TV show on TV that is, and I also have the Lost In Space movie and there are a couple of the original cast on it, like June Lockhart for example, who was the school principal instead of Will's Mother and I can't think of his name at the moment, but he was also on the movie too, bringing the "new pilot" to the Robinsons.
BernieLJ77 3 years ago
Ooops...I just checked...this, what they called "Interstitial," was on Season Three, Volume Two and not on Season One...
BernieLJ77 3 years ago
in the movie angela cartwright was a reporter, i think haha, now that i think of it she was!
TouchMyJunk 3 years ago
Ok, I'll have to watch the movie again, but I did see where the "principal," on the movie, who was June Lockhart, where the "Will" charactor gave her "gorilla arms," and who was it, Mark Goddard I think, who, in the Lost In Space movie, was the person who brought the "new" or "replacement" pilot to the Robinsons before they took off.
BernieLJ77 2 years ago
i think your correct lol if i remember all of the characers from the original show except for "dr. SMith" and the original "will" returned for the movie

Then Gilligan is a close second.
bottleslingguy 3 years ago
That does not compute !!!how could you compare DR Smith to Gilligan , Smith was evil , Gilligan was just a dope
hunkydaboyz 3 years ago
I was going by the annoyance factor but you're right evil does not equal idiot.
bottleslingguy 3 years ago
I think there's a small similarity in that both Dr. Smith and Gilligan were "bumblers" I think the term is...Gilligan would get the others into trouble and so would Dr. Smith.
BernieLJ77 2 years ago
But my friend Dr Smith would've ben quite happy to see the Robinson's die as long as he got his way , evil i tell ya evil
hunkydaboyz 2 years ago
The robot was a cackling clod, a bubble headed bubbie, disreputable dunce and a mechanical moron, but what a friend he would have been.
Dr Smith was so mean to him.
greg0058 3 years ago 3
LOL....and let's not forget doddering dunderhead, mechanical misfit, mechanical murderer, neanderthal ninny, cowardly clump, gregarios gremlin, rusty Rasputin, and blithering bumpkin! Dr. Smith had a million of 'em, poor Robot!
70sLuvr59 3 years ago
i should have remembered those ones. Pay TV is repeating the series here at night. Its early in the second series now. Havent seen the show for years.

Just waorking my way through the series now and the more I watch of Johnathon Harris, the more I am reminded of our own Kenneth Williams.
egapnala65 3 years ago
Our own you Kenneth you mean English.
Heres some new for you , not only was Jonathan Harris English born but Penny ala Angela Cartwrigh is English born as well.
greg0058 3 years ago
Angela Cartwright is English born, but Jonathan Harris was born in New York. There is a prety cool vid on YouTube called "Special Feature: Jonathan Harris" in which Mr. Harris is giving a speech at a convention and he himself says he was born in New York City.
70sLuvr59 3 years ago
Shit i thought he was English born. He kinda sounds it.

Who's doing the crappy voice of the robot? Or is a better, more authentic one dubbed in later?

standalonesociety9 3 years ago
How come they didnt use Bob May for the voice? It would only make sense with the other two.
Pallindrom27 3 years ago
Bob May was never the voice, he was the man inside the suit. Dick Tufeld did the voice. Since this is an outtake, the voice was not yet dubbed in by Mr. Tufeld.

I stand corrected, kwebster62, thank you. I actually realized my mistake awhile ago but forgot where I left the post! LOL. Thanks again. Lost in Space Forever!

I'm guessing it's the voice Bob May, the guy who was actually inside the Robot. Dick Tufeld would later have his voice dubbed over Bob's.
They were one heck of a comedy team!
