Wow. I love drumming. Im on the Port Huron Northern High School Drumline right now. Im hoping to be able to be on this snareline someday. Maybe even center snare someday!
i know a guy who was the center snare for msu one yr and i swear to god on my family's lives i know him cause our high school series is all based on this one
awesome video except for all those damn cars! lol I was just disappointed right when they where doing some awesome visuals 2:26 not only one but three giant vans and suvs drive past blocking the view. Wish they wouldn't play right in the middle of the road so you could get a better view.
@RECON4NOW I was wondering the same thing! Show the freakin quads and basses once in a while, even the cymbals deserve recognition!! Snares aren't the only interesting part of the drumline!
@RECON4NOW I know! I was wondering the same thing! Their are more than just snares in the freaking drumline! Show the quads and basses once in a while! Even the cymbals deserve some recognition! I'm so sick of people making such a big deal over snares! What about the rest of us?!
The Series has changed a bit since I joined the Spartan Drumline as a Freshman in the fall of 1961 -- that is the year Joel Leach wrote the 5/4. We played it for the band for the first time on the first march to the stadium for the first game. People were switching feet, and Falcone was really pissed! When Merritt Lutz came in either '62 or '63 he added quite a few additional parts to the Series thru '65 when Falcone told him it was getting too long! It has been "tweaked" over the years.
We have two sets of jackets: "white" and "green." The green ones look nicer, but the white ones are made of lighter material and are overall better for hot days. Which one we wear on a given day is the director's call.
That's defiantly not true. When i was a senior in High School (07-08) I had the entire score to the MSU Series. My drumline played State's series for fun.
The Series used to be on the MSU Drumline web site but I'm pretty sure we don't want it floating around all over the place anymore. Now you pretty much have to know someone on the line to get it or be on the line to get it. I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly wouldn't give it out to someone I wasn't giving lessons to or something like that.
17 year later and I can't listen without wanting to do all the moves and sounds the non-drummers do (Alto Sax 1988-1991). I still love the series, and it still gets me amped and ready to head for Spartan Stadium. GO STATE!
I agree, but this is actually in line with the drumline's tradition of performing the Series all over the place: unlikely spots on campus, the middle of Grand River Avenue...it's very SMB Drumline to have cars going by on both sides. If that helps. Like you, I'd love to see a video that clearly documents all of what's going on in The Series.
Your best bet might be a video of Spartan Spec if you can find one. You'd probably have to get the marching band DVD in the Student Book Store though.
The Series is always amazing, but there is so much more to it than the snares! This must have been recorded by a parent of the tall guy in the middle of the snares. It would have been nice to see the whole section!
I'm not Rob's dad, haha. But I am a snare player who will be auditioning for the line in April/May, so I'm a bit biased in who I focus on, sorry. :)
I'm aware that everyone has cool stuff in The Series, but I was very very cramped where I was, and if I was going to focus on one section, snares were it.
wow nice drummers! great performance guys!

Okay, I saw a video from 2006, I saw this one from 2008, and another from 2009. How come in this video their uniforms are different?

@AMGarrett09
Really? Does the DM or DM's have two sets of jackets too, or are they always all white?
mashdoctor 2 years ago
they have 2 different unis. the other one that they wear are made of a lighter material for warmer weather.

By that you mean TRIES to play the same thing. They fail at it.

Many high schools around mid-Michigan have parts similar to Michigan States Cadence, but they can't play near as well.

where can i get the music for the tenor part

You would have to audition for and make the MSU Drumline in order to get that music.
