  • very helpful sugarpie! thank you :)

  • Is the Sound quality Good? I'm guessing from your comments that Apple TV is only for movies or whatnot that you have purchased onine and you cannot get your browsing or youtube or anything like that on the TV with Apple TV?

  • Thank so much!! This solved my Mac to TV problem!

  • hi! i got the adapter & hooked up the HDMI cord tot he tv. I'm getting my desktop to show up on the tv but it won't respond or show any webpages...any ideas?

  • Great video, just one simple thing you could've saved money on. You didn't need to buy the jack cord for the sound. You could have plugged up the display cords through the mini display port and the HDMI thing, then you could've done this...

    >System Preferences

    >Sound

    >Play Sound Effects Through:

You're TV should have been right there, and you could've clicked it and it would play through your TV.

Again, great video, just do some research beforehand, saving is always better! :)

  • @PostPranksPlease Thanks for the comment, but if you had read through the previous comments you would note that the cord I purchased does not allow for that, which I also state in the video information. There is a cheaper and more expensive cord, I got the cheaper one that does not allow sound through, it's just the way that cord works. Some research beforehand is always better.

  • @PostPranksPlease Additionally, I have tried exactly what you suggested (which was previously suggested by another user) and it does not work unless I get the Mini DisplayPort cord that I link to (and annotate about) that does allow sound through it.

  • @giddyup523 Wow that's really a shame, well I hope all works out!

  • @PostPranksPlease Yeah, I definitely wish I knew about the cord differences in advance (research would have helped there) but it works fine the way it is, just one more cord to use.

  • Very helpful dear thank you!:)

  • My question is, once my mac is operating dual screens, can I make the video on the tv fullscreen and browse my mac at the same time? Whenever I make the video fullscreen, I have not been able to do anything on my mac because the screen goes black

  • great video...very clear your explanation

  • is there a way to make the screens different? like run two different windows and just scroll between them?

  • @giddyup523 ah yes, I actually found out how to fix it right before I saw your comment! I did the same thing but through my computer! Thanks though!

  • Thanks for the demonstrations. So questions, if I purchase a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable "WITH" sound, I don't need to purchase the audio cord you showed in the video right?

  • @leeswifey85 To my understanding, yes. I still use the set-up I described in this video because it works but others have said the cord "with sound" should be all you need (other than an HDMI cord to attach it to, of course).

  • @giddyup523 I bought all the right cords, plugged them in and nothing worked. I figured out that I have to go to system preferences and then go to display and click mirror displays (under the arrangement tab). Now the video works, but not the sound. I have the cord plugged into the headphone jack and plugged into the audio portion on the tv. Please help!

  • @heatherlange1122 I had to go to audio settings on my TV to allow sound to come through a component while video came through the HDMI. It is likely under some sort of advanced settings on your TV.

  • Thank you

  • You're awesome! Thanks for helping me out!

  • is there a delay in the video and audio when coming from the tv?

  • @mrBrianlovesmovies There shouldn't be one.

  • what model is your mackbook? because it says n the mac site that the 2009 version of the macbook will not work with this connector. I got all the right coreds but it still won't show video. help!

  • @1BubblesPPG The MacBook (white) is from 2007, the MacBook Pro is from mid 2010. Which model and connector are you trying?

  • he has a wii, ps3, and 360, plus a mac…speaking of electronic addiction

  • @godapproved oh yea and camera

  • I have done all of this but how do i connect a keyboard to it? tv = Samsung S24A350H

Also instead on doing that audio jack thing, can i plug Logitech OEM S220 2.1 Speakers into the macbook pro and get sound like that?

  • @234hairbrush I'm not sure, but a Bluetooth keyboard would probably work, I know a Bluetooth mouse works, even if you close the laptop, if you check the box allowing Bluetooth devices to wake the computer. You could plug in the speakers to the computer and get good sound.

  • very helpful thanks

  • Thx. I was always curious on how to do this.

  • zzzzzz why isnt there just a hdmi port omg

  • hey everyone... this video is very helpful, however you don't need any other additional cable for the audio because in the system preferences, you can adjust that in sound and then when you mac is connected to the TV you can see the option and just click and it automatically adjusts... you may need to set it back to normal when you are not connected to the TV.

  • @susi18able That is helpful but it depends on the cord you use. This has come up in the comments before. I have a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cord that does not transfer the sound through it (it was cheap). I link to the better one so you don't need the other cord. I've tried your suggestion and it is not an option for the cord I use, using the computer I have. I recommend people get the better one.

  • @giddyup523 hey thanks for clearing this to the other viewers... i got my cable at the Apple store, so yeah it may be the cable quality... at first i was complaining because i was thinking that i had to run and get another cable in order for my project to show up, but i was able to fix it myself... also my TV was not showing the display how it was on my computer and i had to adjust that too, it had to be mirrored windows so it could show similar to the display on my mac.

  • When i tried this first it worked perfectly, but now when i sync in shows a different background picture, and no icons come up. any advice?

  • Thanks! Best tutorial on how to connect MacBook Pro to tv. Boston fans are wicked smaht! Now will be able to FaceTime or Skype with husband since he is deployed and all of family will see. Thanks again! Go Bruins...

  • How is the quality of the video?

  • hi, my tv just shows my background, no apps no windows is showing just an empty background. any idea why?

  • i did upgrade my macbook to version 10.6 tho. any chance that could be the problem?

  • Using Macbook, i hooked up the mini DVI to Video Adapter. Hooked up the tv (yellow cable) as well. Any idea why it doesn't work?

  • @FJunaidi Does anything come through, does the screen change at all?

  • My macbook screen is dark and i can't use it anymore i bought a macbook pro and i need to transfer my data how do i do that an ideas ?

  • @worldcomander I assume the computer is still running & that you didn't just accidentally hit the screen brightness down to dark (My son has done that to me a couple times) and that plugging it in makes no difference. You may (possibly) have a graphics card or wiring issue. Maybe plugging it into an external monitor or TV will work. Also, try this: while on, press the power button 10 sec to turn it off, then unplug the cable, remove the battery, & waited 5 mins. Then put battery in & turn it on

  • Hi i have hooked up my tv and mac through a MDP but i was wondering if use the AVcable to USB port on the mac will there be sound? or do i have to connect the AVcable to the phone jack on the mac? x

  • I hooked up my hdmi cable to the mini display cord and hooked the mini to my laptop and hdmi to my tv but it still says no signal :( I have the same tv as you also

  • Hi! I have a regular MacBook and a Panasonic TV like you I have the cable that you used for the MacBook Pro hook up (DVI I think!?) though!! Do I need the other cable??

  • TO EVERYONE WATCHING.. BUY THIS FROM MONOPRICE FOR LESS THAN $7

  • what if u don't have an HD tv?

  • @deathonstrike Use this 1:44

    :D

  • thanks i have been trying to figure out the audio for awhile. great step by step vid man

  • how much are the audio cables on radio shack?

  • I have the exact same cords and a vizio hdtv..when I hook it up the computer screen goes purple for a few seconds just like its suppose to but my tv says "Not Support" ...any ideas?? Doesnt make since that it wouldnt support it.

  • Why doesnt Apple just put a damn HDMI port on their Macbooks

  • @stopwhining1 BECAUSE THEY SUCK!

  • @stopwhining1 man im feeling the same way -_-

  • can you also make a dual screen?

  • Hi, i have a samsung plasma tv and it doesn't have the advanced sound options, so i cannot have sound, just the image :( any suggestions?

  • @claudiaidm If you have the setup that requires the Mini DisplayPort, you could try the cord that does allow sound to pass through. I have a link to that one in the description, it should allow you to just use the HDMI cord for picture and sound. That's the one I would have used but I didn't know the difference when I bought the one I show in the video.

  • @claudiaidm you could also just buy external speakers. Most likely, they'll sound better than the television's internal speakers anyway!

  • Thanks, very helpful

  • Yay for the Harry Potter books setting on the shelf. Thanks for making the video. You are adorable. :)

  • @3squareddesigns Thanks, love HP!

  • DUDE AWESOME!!!!

  • I didn't know that there was such thing as the Mini-DVI-to-Composite and S-video adapter even existed!

  • hello have got a mbp 2011 et got the display airport hdmi, the image is good for about 5 minute and after the screen on my tv turn into blue color? van you tell why it's doing this?

  • Is it WORK FOR IMAC TOO ? Pleaaaase .

  • i know this vid is a year old. Im having trouble planning how to connect my 2011macbook air to tv and home theater system. I know the new thunderbolt port replaced the mini display port. The way i understand it is that with thunderbolt, you can transmit both video and sound in high quality. How do i go about connecting this to my home theater system? should i connect both sound and vid to my receiver and what cables should i use? HDMI? optical?

  • Ha ha I was just kidding ya.

  • over heat city in your entertainment center. let them consoles breathe!

  • @SKYLERPOSTON it's better now

  • He looks nothing like Tony Romo. :)

  • I have all the right plugs, but when I plug it in, it only reads the background of my mac not the sites that are up. How do I fix that?

  • @kjparrott Have you tried looking at Displays under System Preferences? It might give you the choice to switch to your TV.

  • @kjparrott under system preferences go to display and then go to arrangements. your mac is probably trying to extend your screen so hit the box next to mirror images and it should work.

  • okay weird but, your pillows and couch are the same as mine! And thanks for this informational video.

  • STAR WARS!

  • Whats the difference between the first link and the third

  • @MsRednwhite the first does not allow sound to pass through, it is the one I purchased without knowing that. The third link allows sound to pass through so you don't have to use an additional cord for the audio, I would recommend that one.

  • It would have been a whole lot more helpful if you'd shown the ends of all the plugs, especially the video ones, so people could see what they were supposed to be buying!

  • @bultacopursang Sorry the video wasn't more helpful for you. I do show the ends of a couple cords and you can see them in the links I provide to each cord I talk about.

  • so much crap yu have to do and buy -___-

  • thats great but.... can you make it so you just display on the tv i.e. as a second monitor and not on both at the same time?

  • @MattBeechey There might be a better way, but I can only get it to work by using my bluetooth mouse (keyboard also) and having the allowing the computer to be woken up by a bluetooth device. You should be able to set it up for that in System Preferences under Bluetooth -> Advanced -> Allow Bluetooth to Wake This Computer. If you have an older system it might be under Keyboard & Mouse. Then if you close the computer and plug the cord into it, it should wake with action on the mouse or keyboard.

  • I just bought a 42" Vizio tv to use as a second monitor as well as just as a tv.

  • hey whats the audio cable actually called

  • @hurly75 3.5 mm to 3 RCA AV Camcorder Video Cable, I link to one in the video description but I bought mine at my local Radio Shack.

  • @giddyup523 ok thanks and with the audio cable do you just connect it to your headphone jack then can you connect the red and white in the av in ports or not

  • @hurly75 Yes, that is what I did.

  • ok this is only for HDTV not for CRT TV

  • hey i did what u said to do but u do know that the hdmi cord will let sound come through to if u want me to tell u just write me back cause the sound does come through hdmi cord so u dont need the headphones cord :) so ya just write me back

  • @austinkr1aol which cord did you use? There is one that does not pass sound through it and one that does.

  • @austinkr1aol and if you used the same cord I did, what did you do because I have tried what everyone else says and it will not work with this cord.

  • I have a newer 13" MBP but it has the Thunderbolt port instead of the mini display port. How do I connect my MBP to my HDTV? Thanks.

  • Does it make the graphics better?

  • Thank for your video! I set up my computer on my tv but couldn't understand why there wasn't sound coming out from my tv.

I'm going to get a audio cord asap!

    Thanks again! :P

  • i cantt get anyy picture on the tv though, only a backgroundd:(

  • @austiiv first move your coursor around until you see it on your tv screen, then you only need to drag the window you're using on your computer until it shows on your tv.

    I hope it works. :)

  • Are you related to Kevin Spacey, because your voice and some of your mannerisms would suggest a kinship. If you told me you're his son, I'd believe it.

  • @iruvdoggies not related to Kevin Spacey (although I did have an odd fascination with his films for a while), but when I told my wife this she agreed with you. :)

  • I have a 13" MBP (2009-) which has a 'mini display port", and I have a non-HD TV which has s-video and RCA?

What do I need to purchase to make it work???

Can't find anyone who knows how.

  • @2btenacious have you tried an HDMI to component cord? You would have to use plug an HDMI cord into the Mini DisplayPort cord and then the other end of the HDMI in to HDMI to component cord, which should hook to your TV. I can't link directly, but you can search for it. As a warning, I see they don't have good ratings and may not work for everything.

  • @giddyup523 So sorry for delayed response. I tried Mini DisplayPort/DVI to DVI/RCA (RGB). Then I purchased an Apple TV with dif cords (Can't get that to work either). Will try your suggestion with MiniDP/HDMI to HDMI/Component. Thank you.

  • I have a 13" MBP (2009-) which has a 'mini display port", and I have a non-HD TV which has s-video and RCA?

  • Thank you for posting this video. You did an excellent job at explaining everything and walking your audience through the steps. I especially want to thank you for the part where you showed us how to change the tv's advanced audio settings, as that got my set up to work. Thanks again!

  • This was so helpful. Thank you so much.

  • I have a question. If you were to use a DVI adapter to connect a Macbook (08) to an HDMI converter will it produce the image? And could I use the same process you did for audio? Thanks

  • @cupcakeapple The audio process should work, although I don't know for sure. Assuming you are using a composite to HDMI converter, I think the DVI adapter would work, but I've never tried that.

  • Thumbs up if you have no clue what your mac is doing when you open it and it makes that crazy noise.

  • just change the setting to HDMI in the sound settings

  • @skillz2880 depending on the cord you use, you can't. With the cord that I used, there is no option in sound setting for HDMI. That is why I provide a link to the cord that you can use for sound.

  • my tv screen is plurple wit stars in i have no pic what to do

  • I got my adapter and it worked great until last night. Now it just shows my stary screen and I have to drag you tube over?????

  • thank you very much. We have the original black macbook, everyone else had the macbook pro.. thats why nothing was working. This helped! Appreciate it.

  • Thank you! Such a great help, great video ;)

  • Hello,

    First of all- Great tutorial.

Secondly- I have a question for you. Not sure if someone already asked you this or not... I have a macbook and I have also purchased the mini DVI adapter. The issue is, when I connect it to the tv, the image is fuzzy. I can't seem to figure out the right frequency to get the tv and mac synced. Any ideas? Please help.

  • you don't need another chord for sound on the Macbook pro, all you need to do is change the audio output to the TV setting, works great!

  • @Stormblair This has come up in several other comments but depending on the HMDI cord you use, you do need a separate cord, I was using the one where you do need the other cord, which I mentioned in the info.

  • @Stormblair How do you do that? I can not seem to get sound to come through my tv. There is no device showing up in the list of output devices.

  • @luvbug50514 you may not be able to. Depending on the cord you have you might not be able to use sound through the cord, which is why I use two cords. I have the one where you can't do both.

  • does anyone know how to set a bravia lcd 40 ex 407 to sound from the input from my mac???

  • thank you so much, you helped me alot :D

  • quit stuttering

    learn to speak dammit

  • @SMacca3103 I haven't had any problems with mine so far. I've had the cord for the MacBook Pro for over a year and the one for the MacBook for a several years, but I don't use them more than a couple times a month. I would guess you won't have more problems with another cord, but I can't say for sure.

  • hey man i got the same one from amazon an it does work pretty well but it broke within 2 maybe 3 weeks and i didnt even use it extensively! Just wondering how urs is holding up and wether the product will keep braking or i was just unlucky haha

    cool video too man

    thanks

    Shaun

  • they sell minidvi to hdmi for the macbook. Its pretty much the same method as the macbook pro

  • this was really helpful. but how would i do it on a standard television with no hdmi capabilities?

  • @nazirkhan92 assuming you are using a computer with a Mini DisplayPort like my MacBook Pro and that you have a TV that at least has the three colored jacks for video and audio, use a "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adaptor". You would actually do the same thing I did more my white MacBook in this video @ 5:00 once you have that cord, meaning that you would get a yellow video cord to hook into the adaptor and the TV and another cord to plug into the headphone jack and the audio jacks on your TV.

  • Thank you for the very straight forward tutorial. I am tech-challenged and even I was able to understand. Thanks again!! :)

  • @CandiPink901 You're welcome, thanks for the feedback!

  • as easy as that? Cool, now im able to watch pornhub on my 42" bravia :D

  • is it imposible to connect the macbook the same way as the macbook pro? cuz i have already bought the mini dvi - hdmi adapter.. HELP!

  • @Rusty7ful It wasn't possible for me to use the same cords for both, but my macbook is from 2007. I believe that the newest macbooks are able to use the mini displayport to hdmi cords, I don't know about all models though.

  • lol love the MUTE, UNMUTE hahah

  • Good video...helped me. Wanted to share with you that since you're using an HDMI, you don't need the audio cable. All you have to do is go to your System Preferences --- then Sound --- then Output --- then select your HDMI and make sure it says "Sound Output" under the "use audio port for" drop down menu. Hope this helps and thanks again for your vid.

  • @sucyagian I used the "Apple DVI to Video Adaptor" to connect my old white Macbook to the TV. You also need a component video cord to connect to the TV (It is linked in the underbar), any cord like you might use for a DVD player would work for that.

  • hi i wanted to buy that item to connect on my hdmi tv. i have the old macbook. what is that called? the white thing you connected to your macbook. can you please give me the name. so , i can buy it in amazon please. thank you..

  • hi i wanted to buy that item to connect on my hdmi tv. i have the old macbook. what is that called? the white thing you connected to your macbook. can you please give me the name. so , i can buy it in amazon please. thank you

  • Thanks, guy, most helpful video iv seen on youtube how to do this. GO BRUINS!!!!

  • Dude, you've Xbox and Wii? WOW!

  • @aifusatiluj there's also a PS3 to the right of the TV stand on the floor

  • every time i hook it up it turns blue than my tv says no singal

  • your so cuteeee (:

  • ok i have a problem. i have a imac and the same exact tv as yours. im using a hdmi cable that has a vga cable on the other end. i connected my tv n mac but i dont see anything. do you think you can help me?

  • WRONG!!! THE WHOLE POINT OF USING THE HDMI IS to have audio and image at the same time, SO all you have to do is to go under setting select the AUDIO OPTION and you will see the option to connect you TV as a audio output. YOU DON'T NEED THE EXTRA AUDIO CORD THAT YOU MENTION ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT MY VIDEO FOR THE SETUP.

  • @snoopy4lb not all mini displayport cords handle sound, including the one I own. If you look in the video info, you will see I knew this and provided a link to a cord that does handle sound. You made a nice video, but if I try what you do for audio, I do not have any option for audio output like you do. So for the setup I describe, you do need an extra cord, but I highly recommend getting the cord that allows audio, like you have.

  • @giddyup523

good to know... I didn't know that they sale two types for this cable, I just thought that since it has the HDMI input that it will give you both the sound and audio. my mistake. thanks

  • can you used a DVI to a DVI adapter connected to a DVI to a HDMI cable?

  • Help me! When I HOok it up, I just see a mac background. I don't see what's on my screen, what's the problem?

  • @mkal22 I'm not sure what's going on. Perhaps try playing with Displays in Systems and Preferences. You may also be able to put the computer into "mirror mode" by hitting F7, although I don't have that on my new Macbook Pro, my older Macbook has that.

  • @giddyup523 you might have your settings set to not mirrored so it is reading your tv as a secondary display you need to change the settings to where it is mirrored if you want what is displayed on your macbook on your tv

  • @wazup692006 thanks, the macbook pro was right but i didn't have the macbook set up right, it's better now

  • @mkal22 its set for dual monitors go to settings and change it

  • @mkal22 Had the same problem. If you didn't click the little mirror modes checkbox yet in system preferences > Displays > arrangement. Do that.

  • @mkal22 its because your computer is using it as a second monitor notice when you movve your mouse to the side it goes to the other screen just go to the setting and change so there both the same

  • useful, now i need a mac

  • Looks good, back when i did it, they weren't selling the HDMI cables for the old macbook. so i couldn't do it as easily, as well as i called apple and LG and they both said i could not do it. therefore i felt better when i did it :) lol. but this is definitely the newer way of doing things. nice.

  • the cops know how to huk up yer b@lls to a taser!!!!

  • what kind of cord did you use for audio?

  • @gboshmad I originally bought a cord at Radio Shack with a headphone jack (3.5mm) on one side and the red and white audio jacks on the other end. In the video, I'm using a cord that came with my JVC camcorder, which has audio and video and I only plug in the audio. I can't put the link in this reply, but I have put it in the description.
