May 18th is a powerful film, it is a must see by Americans for a preview of what may come in America. When Citizens allow their National Government to get out of control, this is what happens. Citizens around the world must demand that all hostilities cease, and the people must retake control of EVERY GOVERNMENT around the world, least events like this continue to happen. Only then will their souls be allowed to Rest In Peace !
Were the soldiers who perpetuated the massacre ever punished? I know Jeon was arrested and tried, but what about the cockroaches of human beings (the soldiers) who fired on their own people? I don't care if they were following orders. They are cowards worthy of no dignity or value.
The democrasy in Korea was not easily gained. Although Guangju struggle seem to have been failed, because of their sacrifice, after 7 years, at last, there could be June 10 struggle which overthrown dictatorship.
from begining, Troop killed you boys who play in stream without reason. and Their order was just clear the area. They call innocent people to communist. But I saw Lots of innocent school girl and boy. even they kill preganant woman no reason. And they using the Media to hide the Truth. Gaverment didn't give choose to surrender. They order to killl everyone.
even if they didnt take arms and just surrendered it would've been highly likely that the military would had done "something" to cover up and then the truth could have been really obscured.
the funniest, thats American supported the massacre because in 1980, korean president is PRO-AMERICA...It's really still something bad for america history lol
Yes, the idiot Ronald Reagan did whatever he could to prevent freedom in countries near communist countries or in threat of a communist revolution! He has blood on his hands as well.
if you visit the Atlanta, there are place called H-mart in Duluth and now a even bigger Korean-town-like mall. There is a rumor/truth? that the nephew of the Former president Jeon is constructing with all the money they brought from the Korea. That is really, really wrongthing to do seriosly.
jeon doohwan is still so scared of all the ghosts he created that he has 2 or 3 snipers stationed on the roof of his home at all times in yeonhui dong here in seoul. it's easy to see from the top of the mountain...guy's a scumbag. this whole incident is the reason that s.korea is democratic now...there's no argument there.

In Korea, if you kill one you'll get a death penalty. If you kill thousands, you'll live and live rich. Koreans are not good at remembering things. They have already forgiven the murderers who caused all this. Not a single one got punished. Are they stupid or what?
i'm filipino and i saw the movie 'May 18'. In the beginning I thought it was a fiction, it was more like what happened in our country in 1986, the difference was that there was no bloodshed. i never imagined it actually happened in Korea.
A famous Korean professor, Lim Hyeon-jin, whom I met last year told me so. And that's because America didn't aid the citizens of Gwangju; I think America, so-called one of the most democratic country, is also moved by its own interest.

@NemorensisLacus us shouldnt do anything. No aid, no interference. let others do what they want. Korean need to find their own strength, not rely on other countries. Same, other countries should leave others alone, and not support pro-us dictators like jeon.
I read that the Americans didn't hinder the Koreans to move some forces that wasn't actually allowed to be moved like they were. So that is one issue, among others I suppose, making some blame the Americans.
The people in Gwangju first thought that the US carrier was sent there to help them but it turned out otherwise. This was the turning point;after that, the Korean progressives turned to be strong anti-American. It should be noted that the progressives before Generation 386 have strong US ties ,especially the feminists.
For all of you who were not there, YOU DON'T KNOW AND YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND. For my fallen brothers and sisters I hope that peace has found you. For all of those who were there and participated I hope that you will someday be able to find peace.

the military started, but it became a cruel fight when the protestors armed themselves with machine guns and flak-artillery...this is a fact that shouldn't be forgotten, too.... and that they were shouting pro-north-slogans and that kim il sung was eager to intervene and and and...history is never as black-white as it seems..THIS is a point to remember
The point to remeber is that HISTORY is written by the victors and the survivors and is written NOT for the telling BUT is written for another reason only known to the writer! Having been there and having been in the middle of it, having seen the bodies of my friends and having seen the dedication and sacrifice that people were willing to make I am appalled by the comments that I read from those of you who know so little!
There were no pro-North slogans and the demonstrators warned North Korea not to use the situation for their own purpose. Actually suspicious figures were caught and turned in to the military. They used arms to protect themselves and were military reserves so their use of weapons is legitimate(first one falls into the situation of 위법성 조각사유)
Yes In a prior uprising in Busan, the marines did not fire but showed restraint despite the demonstrators using violence. The military dictators should have just sealed off the area ,withdraw all military and police from Gwangju and asked the UN to intervene so that Gwangju could determine its own fate via a UN-monitored referendum.
So what would you do if some armed soliders kill people with guns? These people were army reserves (some were home guard soldiers at that time)and they acted as such.
광주 학살은 아주 regrettable 일이였습니다. May 18, 1980. I wasn't there at that time, but I will never forget. Then Mt. St. Helens erupted in May 18, 1981. Always seemed more significant to me because of the date - like a message.

According to some non-Korean historians, Kwangju massacre was the seed for modern day Anti-Americanism in Korea. Is that true??

How would non-Korean historians know about that? Hmm.....they can assume all they want, but there is no fact on when that started.
