i know its been awhile, but like you need to feel it. not just play notes. Drive yourself into it and own it, listen to it. Also, on the valse, when you start, be loud and furious first, then get softer until theres nothing, THEN out of no where start off nice and gentle, and build. Thats for all music you play, make it sound amazing.
Great overall performance! Agreed, use slightly softer mallets. Work on bring the stick back up off of the bars when you strike. You have to much downward motion going on. For example, play and try to quickly draw the sound out of the bars. You get a much more elegant sound instead of KLUNK, KLUNK, KLUNK! also remember its more wrist action on mallets and no fingers! Well no or LITTLE finger action. Better sound this way as well
nice job man. you were basically perfect. For me though I exaggerate the slow and soft parts. Like When you got to the 2nd part of the piece (you know what Im talking about) I would slow that down more. that way you show control and you enjoy playing it even more.....but thats just me man. good job
Fantastic piece of music, and thanks for posting your video of it. I played this a few years ago, and got inspired to look at the music again. Then thought I'd check out videos. Yours is the first I found. Love your sound--compliments on your chioce of mallets. I'm also really envious of your instrument. I never had one of my own but still want one!
this prolly doesn't matter, but i played this for my solo and ensemble piece, group 1. im a freshmen. i didn't go to state but was really close. ur doing a great job with all of ur mallet technique and everything. =)
Hi, sorry for the delayed response. For your mallet choice, I think it really depends on your instument. Are you playing this on marimba or xylophone? If marimba, what kind? I was playing on a Musser (and sometimes an Adams) and I picked Encore "blues" - model 32YR. These are medium hard, providing the attack you need for the fast section, but not over-killing it on the valse section. Any medium hard mallet (any brand) would work well on most instruments for this piece. Good luck!
Hey wingerspoon, I play this today for my Solo and got a Gold Medal, but Im not going to State because I went it Group II instead of Group I. Once I can get a camera set up I'm going to record me playing it.
What tips would you have on putting this piece together. What difficulties did you have? I ask because I'm playing this for my solo and ensemble in about 3 weeks, and could use all the help I could get. Hopefully I'll get around to posting a video.
Hi - The biggest thing is making sure you have the notes well enough to be able to play the piece as fast as it is written. I literally started out out 60bpm, and played the whole piece at that speed, then gradually crept to 70, 80, 90, etc, 160, 165, 170, 175, etc, 208, even 220bpm at one point. Make sure during the middle "Valse" section, you take liberties and add plenty of musicality to the phrases. My teacher told me to make it as "shmaltz-y" as possible - lots of exagerration! -Good luck!
I made it to state with this piece! I'm very excited, but there's still a lot of stuff I need to work on with it. I have an iffy video of it i might post, but I'll keep working on it before I move on to my 4 mallet piece.
ive gotten the 0:13 - 1:00 and 1:52 - 2:25 all memorized and ive only practiced it around 10 hours. I should have it down and pat by Feburary (my solo contest)...one again nice video...ill post more comments when i get more it memorized..
It's good to know that during your performance at the competition, if a for whatever reason a cat jumps onto the marimba, you'll know how to handle it :p
2. You can take your time befor the "morendo" part of the valse. Theres a fermata and that means you can take as long as you want before you go to the upper octave. By the way morendo means dying. Imagine a guy who is slowly bleeding out and takes his very last breath at the end of the phrase.
First of all: Nice Playing! But it isn't all great and i hope you can apreciate some hints. 1. Play music, don't play notes. Let the bars sing and don't be too rigid with the timing or the dynamics written on the sheet. You can use rubato in the valse section more freely.
my goodness david, I learn more and more ways you can impress me every single day. Wonderful, wonderful job. I had no idea you could play these little thingers!!!
one of the better performances i've seen of this piece actually. nice job! the only criticism i could make is that when you play chords the mallets don't always strike the keys at the same time. also, your left hand seems slightly tense; but that could simply be the angle from which i'm viewing. what mallets are you using by the way?

It's not quite mono-dynamic... but it's a bit on the hard side. Might be the mallets. Great accuracy though

Definitely seems like the mallets are too hard...

Very great playing! Even if I prefer playing a little bit more slow, just think this sounds more beauty, but everyone got a different view ;)
Maybe you should just play more quiet at the beginning and by moving down getting constantly louder.
But your technique is great, I really enjoyed it.
And by the way, the cat is the funniest thing I've seen :D
