Could someone check the temperature (aluminum chassis) under heavy load (playing a game one hour, for example) on a Macbook Pro (9600m GT or higher) and notify me? I am interested in the numbers underneath the book, between the LCD and the f-keys (especially on the left side), the area where the w,a,s,d buttons are and on the lower left on top of the book. I ask because this thing gets very, very hot - not warm - during gameplay. I can barley touch it. Thanks!

my pro will hit 105 celsius (221 farenheight) sometimes and the fan will go at 7500rpm (fan rated for only 6000rpm)
and since its the unibody, it warped. but its all within spec according to apple. so i guess that means that i should only be worried if everything is working properly, cuz in apple terms, defective seems to be a good thing..

If this happens during normal usage like web browsing and listening to music, something might be wrong. If you are watching flash content like youtube or playing a game, than it is normal for a macbook to heat up like that, but if it does get hot, close the game let it rest and up the fan speed.

The worst fact with the white macbooks is the heat really slows down the computer. I bought a laptop stand with built in fans recently and suddenly my macbook goes about three times as fast.

To keep it cool and get an accurate temperature reading, download smcFanControl. That application tells you the temperature of the cpu and lets you increase fan speed. Also, are you using the aluminum unibody macbook or plastic unibody macbook?
100 degrees fahreinheit is barely 38 degrees Celsius. That is VERY COOL. On average, my MacBook Pro runs at 50 degrees Celsius, and it heats up to 70 or 80 while playing games and stuff.

haha I had an old compaq that got to 120C during 100% cpu usage. There was zero airflow due to a heatsink packed full with dust. I wish I had a screenshot of it. To touch the trackpad would burn my hands. I had to use an external mouse and keyboard.

I have a question for the owner or anyone who has one, I'm thinking of buying a macbook with the 2ghz chip and 1gb RAM but im seriously put off by the 64mb shared graphics because I use my notebook for DVD's, TV and movie editing quite frequently so quality is important to me. I currently have a toshiba with 128mb shared which is just right but I wouldn't tolerate a drop in performance. What I want to know is how is quality for DVDs etc.?

Those temps seem Ok. I have a HP Pavillion ZE2113 with an AMD Semperon 2800 processor that gets extremely warm on the bottom near the processor area. The Seagate hard drive also give off a lot of heat. I don't have an infared thermometer but it is probably about 108-110 F; not something I could comfortably keep on my lap for a while.
I will measure my Mac Book Pro and post it. It gets so hot you can not touch it. I will be interesting to see. Actually in the last firmware upgrade they removed the temp gauge feature. According to mac these machines are no longer considered laptops- they are called Mobile computers

Behind the macbook, below the screen, theres a plastic grill that came convered with a transparent plastic in the first macbook´s shipments. Just remove that plastic and it will cool off. Apple makes the best notebooks in the market today, thats a fact, either u wanna run mac os, windows or linux.

there is a seal in the vent under the bar between the screen and the keys. if you use a small tweeser you might be able to get the plastic film off the vent. hope it solves your heating problems.

The iBook 1.42ghz gets 150*F when using all processor resources normally. Though the G4 can handle this. The fan doesn't kick in till around 170*F.

Those temps seem Ok. I have a HP Pavillion ZE2113 with an AMD Semperon 2800 processor that gets extremely warm on the bottom near the processor area. The Seagate hard drive also give off a lot of heat. I don't have an infared thermometer but it is probably about 108-110 F; not something I could comfortably keep on my lap for a while.

I will measure my Mac Book Pro and post it. It gets so hot you can not touch it. I will be interesting to see. Actually in the last firmware upgrade they removed the temp gauge feature. According to mac these machines are no longer considered laptops- they are called Mobile computers

Behind the macbook, below the screen, theres a plastic grill that came convered with a transparent plastic in the first macbook´s shipments. Just remove that plastic and it will cool off. Apple makes the best notebooks in the market today, thats a fact, either u wanna run mac os, windows or linux.

there is a seal in the vent under the bar between the screen and the keys. if you use a small tweeser you might be able to get the plastic film off the vent. hope it solves your heating problems.
