The older lady is actress/singer Shannon Bolin, who played the wife of the middle-aged man in the film "Damn Yankees" - and the gentleman she's walking with in this commercial is her real-life husband of over 50 years! It's nice to realize the older couple were just exactly who they seemed to be. Makes the commercial even sweeter and more poignant.

Okay is it just me, or does it seem like the young couple just got in an argument? The woman looks very modestly pissed; she's crossing her arms, she's not looking at her husband, and then they split up to shuffle on past the sweet elderly couple. It seems like they see them and then think "Oh yeah, let's pretend we're in love so we can look happy too".

The older couple is really all this commercial needed to say "diamonds are forever".

This version makes it seem like somebody died. Or somebody's taking the long walk to the electric chair or something.

And that's why i prefer the 2008 version with "Stand By Me" .... it sounds more like a relaxing and happier version. It fits well with this ad because the people are smiling.

In the 2002 version, if the people were frowning/sobbing, well....... self-explanatory.

this is the first version of the commercial i had seen. i hadnt seen it in years, and i still remembered the theme. i love this song way more than the Stand By Me version. just an opinion. but if i got that song stuck in my head for that long, then it just feels right.

This version (with this song) work better for me.

I love the song "Stand By Me" but I believe that the song used on this version makes the viewer focus on the older couple and makes a stronger connection when the younger woman turns around. "Stand By Me" version leaves you focusing on the younger couple from start to end and there dynamics are diminished when the woman turns around.

I fully agree...the original music was a much better fit; sounds like what the elderly couple would have heard when they were the age of the young couple, it matches the pace the couples are walking, and it has a much more romantic feel.

I agree... for sure... I loved the richness of the original. BUT to add to your point, when the Drifters released "Stand By Me", the elderly couple would have been about the age of the younger couple. By the song being a re-make, it assists in driving home the concept that even-though things change over time (including the song), the core and fundamental basis of things remains the consistent. Interesting point, I like it :-) But that would put the elder couple in their late 60s to mid 70s. They appear older than that; well into their eighties. They also have an Old Europe look to them, suggesting they grew up in Europe during WWII. That's another reason why the original music seems to fit them better.

I actually went to the iTunes music store and tried to find the song that appeared in the new version of this commercial. Apparently, there's an instrumental version that sounds a lot like the one from the commercial. "Stand by Me (Instrumental)" by The Ventures. Hope that helps!

It is indeed Yumeji's Theme, from the movie "In The Mood for Love". The version in the commercial is by Shigeru Umebayashi. There are a number of other versions out there that sound somewhat similar, but not exactly as used in the diamond ad. The track is not available on iTunes in the U.S., even though it is listed and you can preview it. You can find the entire soundtrack on Amazon from 3rd party sellers for around ten bucks.

For the music, search "in the mood for love slow motion feelings" on youtube. The video featured there is directly cut from Chinese movie "In the mood for love" and the music used is called "Yumeji's Theme". Not an official confirmation, but maybe a rearrangement in the diamond commercial.
