Tom is a simply amazing song writer, an entertainer of that true old-school vaudvillian tradition. A man who writes songs from the places of simple but deeply profound emotion. He crafts his words around these feelings like an impressionist painter, not aiming for complete photographic accuracy but for the fundamental and underlying truth of the concept. A rough daimond, a thing of fractured and broken beauty. A man, honest and real, singing from his heart.
I first heard Tom in 2008 and I hated it. I hated his voice and didn't make it past the second song. 2 years later, my MP3 player lands on him (The Earth Died Screaming, to be exact) while I'm on a bike ride, and I am in LOVE. Fucking LOVE. I just wasn't ready for it back then.
One look at his hands, and you can understand all that you need to about him. Awkward, unorthodox, and infinitely beautiful, in a straining and longing sort of way. What a life I have in front of me because of him.
I'm working on a project about the dark side of the moon. That album indicates life in a way. But Waits' shady, twisted, direct and light appearance to the world surpass even that milestone i music history: waits music and voice has been in all corners of life.
Write a better song than this one, and then play it for over a decade whilst keeping it fresh and interesting and then I'll give what you have to say some weight.
It's not the piano part who counts when we judge Tom Waits music. It's the way he sings, perform and the most important song writing. all of this is really cool. Expensive conserts though. 400 euro.
What's the guy at 2:00 doing? Is he playing something I can't hear?

I have the blues this morning, and while his music isnt exactly helping my blues disappear, at least its giving it proper company.

He's got such flat hands when he plays piano...
It seems he never tries to recreate the album version of this song...in fact, ill wager that i can play the piano part of this song better than him...
Gsssss123 4 years ago
Hihi! its not about playing piano or singing its about feeling which YOU get when YOU listen to him!
