I really enjoyed this performance. Really nice, dude. Great voice! It was really nice to hear a baritone with the low A's sing it, too. There are far too many versions of this song overacted by musical theatre queens with terrible vibrato.
I don't know why people are complaining about underacting, it was amazing. In this case the lack of movement got the point across better than a lot of movement would. It's like the phrase, "Silence speaks volumes."
I used to go to school with Clark before he graduated. He is one of the most phenomenal male vocalists/actors you will EVER come across. Maybe his way of communicating in this piece if stillness. You don't always need to be moving or expressing every word. He's more in his body than any other actor I know.
You're making a false comparison. It's not a question of underacting vs. overacting. It's all about having more meaningful communication. That can be done with less movement, but through movement that is no simply thrown in because the singer doesn't know what to do as in this video. THAT is distracting.
That may be true, but Clark here was seriously underacting, in that he was not communicating the meaning of the text with his gestures, but rather just making generic "look, I'm singing a beautiful song!" hand movements.
Having just done A New Brain, and working with our Roger... It really is just a matter of listening and reacting to the lyrics for acting. Not too difficult. But true... nice voice.
The reason why a character sings is because they are feeling something that cannot be expressed by mere words alone. Hence, physical actions is borne out of those feelings organically.
Notice how you stood there simply when you sang the first verse up to "Sex is good"? Those moments were the most touching compared to the rest of the song. A physical action on stage should be a result of the same processes in real life. You probably gesture with your hands wildly when you are excited or when you feel something and truly want to communicate it with whoever you are talking to. The same thing should be applied on stage.
BEAUTIFUL WORK and BRAVO for challenging your abilities with a difficult song. You imbue your singing with so much meaning and honesty that it is heartbreaking and breathtaking at the same time. Work on extending those qualities to your acting. In this performance, your vocals and acting are disconnected. It felt like you were gesturing simply for the sake of doing something on stage. It distracts from the magic of your voice.
You act with your voice - a rare but amazing trait. Yes, you're a bit stiff at the beginning, but this is great. Wonderfully emotive. Thank you for sharing this.
This is my favorite version of this wonderful song. I hope to see Clark one day in New York. He has an amazing gift.
