@krayzeejojo That was up to the individual. There were many cases of people making both choices. There were many "Kapos" that beat and tortured other Jewish inmates, in many instances worse than the Nazi's. On the other hand, there were many cases of people refusing to help the Nazi's in any way even if it meant their own death. I've read of people jumping alive into cremation pits. Rudolph Hoess said Jehovah's Witness's, nearly to a person resisted, he had them executed.
@clintonearlwalker You've made some valid points, but try to understand that this was a time and place where the sense of logic was completely loss to utter madness. Not all prisoners could be expected to think 100% clearly, especially since the Nazis have psyched them out into giving these people a life-or-death situation. That's all I'm getting at.
@krayzeejojo I'm not saying what I would or would not have done in that situation, nor am I the judge of what other people did or didn't do, I'm only saying that to a certain extent, I know what they did do. I did 3 years in prison myself, 1 year in supermax, I know a bit about it. I've talked to 15 year old kids in Poland with relatives in the camps. They said most people would do absolutely anything just to stay alive one more day.
VERY powerful and moving. Thank you VERY much for sharing this excerpt with us; I'm going to have to go looking for this film to take out of the library or to rent - especially after having SHOAH this year. Miss Strasberg's acting is outstanding, too (well, after all, she was an experienced pro by now, having done a great deal of stage, TV, and movie work before this, including the premiere Broadway production of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, in which she played Anne Frank).
@actresscutie Th doctor is explaining to her what she has do stay alive. She is taking the idendity of another woman who has died.Afterwoods she does ANYTHING to stay alive. The ending before she dies is perhaps the most sad scene in the whole of cinema history. When a German soldier "friend" says to her "why did you turn of the electricity " and as she dies she reciteds the jewish prayer "Shema Y'Isroel".
@BikersFromIreland Why so shocked ? Where does it say that there are no bad element to be found in any group you care to name ? No bad Sikhs ? No bad Buddhists ? Nobody in prison for terrible things in Switzerland ? No criminals among the Jewish people in Israel ?
Fact is you can find unpleasant psychopaths anywhere and everywhere , including among the jewish population of Europe in the mid-twentieth century .
The Nazis actually recruited some of the Kapos from their civil prison system .
@AdmiralofU2 I had heard of Sobibor, but never knew Sobibor and Treblinka were the only successful revolts. It had to be one of the two, so your guess is as good as mine.
@Zyworski There is much info on Wikipedia about the camps, also on YouTube. There is a very good movie entitled "Escape from Sobibor" posted on YouTube. That escape led to Aktion Erntefest, where 18,000 Jews were shot in one day at Majdanek. Also, "Kitty Return to Auschwitz" 14 part series post on YT is the best survivor testimony of Birkenau in existence in my opinion.
For every nazi executed after WWII, a hundred more ought to have been.

@BikersFromIreland Let's say you only had two choices:
1. Be your own worst enemy
2. Be killed instantly for insubordination.
Which would you choose?

Is the whole movie up anywhere?

Is this movie rooted in fact and if so which camp? The only mass escape I have heard of was Treblinka.
Zyworski 1 year ago
@Zyworski Haven't you heard of Sobibor? Well it's probably not that camp anyway.
