I was introduced to this movie by those who hated it. They obviously expected it to be like something else, but I absolutely loved it and it has become my personal favourite movie ever since. Those who hate it just don't 'get' it. The film is pretty much like Aguirre wrath of God meets Eraserhead. Very meditative, creepy and goddamn beautifully made. The music is sublime too.
Don't need hollywood stunt budgets, don't need hollywood trained actors, don't need hollywood subliminal programming making the movie seem "hip", you just need Nicolas Winding Refn ;)
I have had the pleasure of watching all the movies directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and I have to say that "Valhalla Rising" is one of his most thought-provoking, albeit misunderstood films. Hopefully, with the success of "Drive" more people will go out and rent all of Refn's films. As for the soundtrack, I would also like to own it but I'll settle for buying the movie instead.
The movie of the year, for me.. Watching it was like getting deep into unanswered questions, it was also like watching hypnotive paintings. I clearly remembered dreaming about David Lynch's "Eraserhead" the night I saw "Valhalla Rising".. We all too often use the word "amazing", but this really was...
It's absolutely true. I don't get why people just assume this is nothing more than a 'film about vikings' when clearly, Refn created this with the idea of making fun of such movies. People really need to look beyond trailers and high budget action films
@suntzu100 man you should go to imdb and write a review! there are too many negative comments on the forum there and i bet you could help people see why this movie is important. your totally right, its a metaphor for life.
@RinzMD He didn't. Remember that one-eye was able to predict the future, that's how he won his fights over the years, he knew sacrificing himself to the natives would equate to them letting the boy live, which is why he did it. Everything one-eye does in the movie, he does it for the boy.
@RinzMD Im not trying to sound desrespectfull, but. If they all die, what's the point of the film then? And besides, i think a boy from that day and age is more able to survive in the wild then most adults today.
@MaximTOL From what i get, "hell" is where they came from. Taking the boy out of hell and into the "holy land" was his way of saving the boy (the only human being who didn't see him as a monster) from hell. In the end, after stacking stones, (his own grave) he sacrifice himself to ensure the boy's safety and went back to where he came from, his home, hell. (well at lest spirituli)
This film was something that I couldnt forget for the last week. The thing is that it left me a lot of questions which are not answered! I understand that this film was philisophical, but I didnt get it. Can anyone please tell me what was realy happening at the ending and what the hell happened to the boy?
wish i could have this song to move the iron around. After watching this movie i feel like i can balance the world on my shoulders. so solid. anyone know where to download this track?
@vampsith I had this on my ipod whilst sparring in Kenpo the other night, one hell of a work out handelling all 8 quandrants at once, the beat very subtly unleashes the force.
@FreakyJP For what it's worth, the Valhalla Rising track reminds me of Max Steals Briefcase from the movie Collateral. Maybe you'll like it as much as I do. watch?v=nB0db4q7WvE
Arcturis... if you're being sarcastic about fear, then you have no artistic imagination. Give up on life. If you are being literal about this movie having no historical accuracy read some books. Give up on life. You suck
First off- I love this soundtrack. If you are looking for an action-packed Viking movie- wrong tree. The movie has lots of problems, but it presents really striking combination of image/texture/sound- in a word it's very cinematic (as compared to literary, theatrical...). I agree that the hour and a half watching was not particularly enjoyable, but I'm pretty sure I will remember many of the images and whatever they evoke for a long time. To me that's worth something.
ny no means a great movie, grading on a curve Id give this feature a oscar, IM sick and tired of artificialty and crapola in movies, Brad Pit may star as Abe Lincoln, this is a time travel leap, and like time travel you aint necessarily gonna know what the hells going on just accept and watch
This movie is a piece of shit, hour and a half feels like 4 hours, it is like no country for old men, except WAY less dialague and WAY less action. a bunch of starving guys traveling for an hour and 10 minutes exchanging facial expressions every 20 minutes some one gets stabbed and then the main guy gets clubbed by native american looking dudes, the end.
You might think, oh that is just a summary, no... it is the ENTIRE movie
@Arcturistheballer I see this movie went completely over your simpleton head, and the fact that you compare it to No Country For Old Men, in a bad light, really just lets me know that you reside on the bottom of the barrel plateau of consciousness. Definitely not an action movie, it's an amazing film with a lot of symbolism and a lot for the viewer to interpret.
@Arcturistheballer This movie doesnt cater to you, its like hitching a ride on a time travlers back, dont expect to understand everything you see. They dont see native Americans with the eyes of nick at night watchers, Its time for men on wires with moose in their hair for a action movie to leave, its not brilliant, but the idea is, realism
@Arcturistheballer theirs no way I can change your mind, but it is realistic, the slave fighting is not hammed up at all, but when they land in north America & it gets weird, thats a way of forcing u to see things as those back then did, as demonic & mythic, when its just a bunch of indians
@Cerberusballs oh neither have I :) But I usually enjoy those films for the ride not for the message. I think those movies are meant not to teach you anything but to put you into certain trance and trigger your imagination and "idea exploring". Blazing and watching it works too...
