  • lo necesito en español este video porfavorr!!!!

  • Im more intrested in repairing the "connections" between neurons

  • but its also possible that maybe you could forget who your wife was maybe thats not a bad thing ill take that pill

  • fucking zombies.

  • lmfao da future is closer dan ya think

  • Thanks for posting this video

which episode is the one where they show that professor who plans to soon put this tiny nano carbon tubes into the brain to stimulate parts of the human vision for the ultimate virtual reality experience? I saw this on one of the episodes but can't remember which one it is.

    any help much appreciated

    Many thanks in advance

  • hi everyone

Which chapter in the Discovery NextWorld Series talks about Neurogenesis?

Neurogenesis is just a boring scientific proof to the philosophy od "Practice makes perfect". Everyone know that Brain can be changed when learning new skills. But the most important issue is how to change people's altitude, personality and habit. If scientists can find out the way, wow!

  • "Maybe that's good in some cases." LOL

  • zombies.......

  • Imagine what kind of horrors we can do if we can be able to use the full brain capacity...it is not the physical capability of the brain what make the difference...we are social entities..Education !!! There is the story of the chicken child in France...a child who grew up among the chickens and ate as the chickens refusing to use the hands but just her mouth and legs...We are not only physical but more social that any other animal in this alive kingdom... U brain is an educated muscle !

  • Both are important. Our brains are so potent precisely because of our social nature. For instance, wolfs have proportionally greater brains than lions. Love, learning and stimulating enviroments are all potent stimulators of neurogenesis, even in the adult human brain. The idea that we have our "brain potential" supressed and we only use a small part of it is a myth. Rather, our brain's capacity is dependant on how much we use it.

  • Depressed and mentally ill people have brains with impaired neurogenesis and, leaving political correctness aside, fewer neurons. I doubt Hitler was a really intelligent person.

Just wanted to say I think you're right, but that the "physical" aspects are not at all separated from the social ones.

  • @EL66K There is actually a correlation between genius and mental disorders. Especially bipolar and schizophrenia. My IQ is 157 (measured by a psychologist not some internet B.S.) and I suffer from bipolar disorder. Hitler could have been intelligent. He did conquer many countries. Historians and scientists think he may have suffered from neurosyphilis.

  • @guitarobsessed85

Yeah, sorry, I was talking some bulshit there, about mentally ill people necesarilly having fewer neurons, or being less intelligent (which need not be the same). Yet, I'm not aware of such a link (mentall illness and genious people). Is it significant statistically, or are there just anecdotes?

  • @EL66K It has been widely studied. There is a book regarding the subject call, "Touched with Fire." The book is written by psychologist, Kay Redfield Jamison. The number of neurons in a brain doesn't mean too much with regards to intellect. For example, when your brain is developing intelligence early in life it actually eliminates more neurons than it generates. This is because some neurons are not as efficient as others. More neurons fire in a "dumb" brain when trying to solve a problem.

  • @guitarobsessed85 so at 14 years old you said some neurone in my brain is eliminate , and i dosent generate? if one time i smoke i little bit of weed with friend it killing 3x more neurone and never produce another again ? it is what you said ?:O

  • @mere0006 well thats a lie because when you drink alcohol and you get drunk is because the brain cells have been killed and when you wake up the next morning or stop drinking and you fell less drunk is because your neurons have basically grown back to replace the lost ones but it isnt always the case heavy drinking can cause perminant damage so dont think you can get away with it ;) there is the is theory that alcohol kills weak uslelss brain cells and replaces them with new fresh ones,

  • @connorhobson1 yeahh , that a good one news :P thank you , and if one time i drinking like too much and i puke everywhere , it want say i have perminant damage :P ? or is only at LONGTERM HEAVY DRINKIN it can be dangerous..?

  • @mere0006 yes it is only long term drinking that causes to much perminant brain damage, dident mean it as in you have a few drinks and your damaged it is just that if you drink heavy for one time it would do very little damage, as long as it isnt a regular occurance

  • @connorhobson1

This is complete and utter bullshit, really. Why would you make a comment about something you have obviously never looked into?

  • @guitarobsessed85

Bipolar disorder is a brain deteriorating disease. Most mental disorders, like schizophrenia, correlate negatively with IQ, although some forms of depression (bipolar is not one of them) have a higher incidence in people with high IQ. I remember reading somewhere that depression is overrepresented in both ends of the IQ distribution, but can't vouch for that.

I'm sorry if I'm a prick in telling you this, but I believe an IQ of 157 can safely see some decline ;) =)

  • @avraks Hmm that contradicts what I learned in my psychology courses while obtaining my Biology degree (Masters of Science). I am not trying to sound pretentious I just wanted to state my credentials. Thank you for the complement. I did not say the disorders have a high percentage of people with high IQ's but that a high percentage of people who have high IQ's tend to have mental disorders. With Schizophrenia for example the DSM IV (diagnostic criteria) lists high IQ as a factor in diagnosis.

  • @guitarobsessed85

Well, as a rather small portion of society has a disorder, it seems counter intuitive that a lot of high iq-induviduals have disorders, without the average IQ of people with disorders being above the mean? It could be explained by the low end of the iq scale having a counterweight, as I suggested yesterday, but I still cant vouch for that, and it only applied to kinds of depressions not genetically biased, from what I remember. I do not find high IQ in DSM Schizophrenia crit.

  • @avraks You should read "Touched with fire." If you look through history you will find that most genius people suffer from mental disorders. Examples: Nikoli Tesla, Goya, Warhol, Poe, Virginia Wolfe. Einstein's behavior suggest Asperger’s syndrome, according to a commentary in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine

  • @guitarobsessed85

Genius consists of creativity as well as intelligence. If we define creativity as the ability to think outside the box constituted of the thoughts of the masses, it is natural to asume a disorder would aid in divergent thinking? Certain neurological conditions, like Bipolar Disorder, can also vastly increase productivity in parts of the "condition cycle". The seclution a disorder might cause, especially in high IQ people, could set aside time for persuits of the intellect?

  • @guitarobsessed85

Read my last comment, not sure it got attahed to yours =S Ill get back to you later, but the c key of my GFs

comp just stoped working, so for now Im off. Read up on latent inhibition, and its manifestation in low iq, and high iq, people. I believe you will find it interesting.

  • But it's possible to forget who your wife was...

maybe that's not a bad thing in some cases.

    LOL!

  • Frankly you just need a bigger skull carnium and better organization.

anyway smoke pot and you got new neurons.,

  • smoking weed causes neurogenesis?

    lol :)

  • ok so actually yes smoking weed is proven to enhance neurogenessis in the human DG.

in reality a lot more areas and cells in the adult brain are capble of it. although what this contributes to intelligence and memory in the constraints of the cranium is uncertain.

  • If you are deeply concerned about adding new neurons into an existing cortex that is more or less complex at the age over 10 the danger of overwritting neurons is probably there, maybe "overwritting" is not the only danger, also the communication between an existing neurosystem could be disturbed by implementig unwritten neurons, thats at least what I learned while studying bc. of psych.

  • I'm strongly sceptical of the speculation of important memory loss. I've been able to remember things I'd long forgotten in greater detail. I wouldn't be surprised if unused older insignifigant memory was pruned for greater efficiency.

  • It would be better to "reformat" the insignificant memory neurons so that they can be used to store new memory's or capabilities.

  • Yep. Certainly.

  • excellent. maybe it helps for a person in coma.

actually my husband is in that case =(

this is a good article. sorry for my bad english =(

  • I was born in UK and i think your English is good!

  • thaks for your comment

  • Maby..., with this way of overwriting old neurons by putting new ones in, they could overwrite part of the memory where trauma's is placed. That way they could rehabillitate traumatised poeple. (I'm not english)

  • Umm... So we know something that we already know? Isn't that a waste? MAYBE they might make more interesting things, but so many people will just waste them in some complex way. Sigh*

  • But, can't I learn a new language at my 70s with the neurons that I already have??? Besides, humans only use 1% of their brain capacity. Why should my body use EXTRA neurons when it doesn't use 99% of the capacity it already have? Don't want to criticize the video, it is very interesting, just curious. 5 stars.

  • we use 8-11 %

Einstein used 14%, perhaps in the next deacade, century, or millenium..we will be able to use up to 20% of maximum brain capacity. Can you imagine what we can achieve with 25%..right now we are at 11-12% and look what we achieved.

The brain is a more complex organ than the universe! I say lets understand the grey matter first, and then go to the universe!

  • @bader58: well Einstein had some vision problem (thats what I heard) text was backwards for him or something... that could be a side affect of using more % of your brain.

  • He learned to speak and read late. He was always amazing at math, despite his modesty.

As a child, he was placed in both advanced and remedial classes. Some called him a retard; others called him a genius. To me, he was just a visionary.

  • Einstein copy from the Greeks as Shakespeare copy from a peasant. They not exceptional at all.

  • ".right now we are at 11-12% and look what we achieved. "

What ? We`ll build BIGGER bombs, destroy the planet at a BIGGER, FASTER rate....c`mon...we don`t even know how to interact and live in harmony with our "limited" capacity right now...what gives you the idea that we`ll do this just because we have "more brains".

Perhaps we should be focusing on fixing up our existing situation before we decide to start playing God and fucking around with something that is not ours to fuck around with.

  • We will be able to solve ways we can fix the plannet.

It is easier to destroy the atmosphere than find a way to restore it.

That is why we need to play God since he isn't helping much around here.

  • fuck off hippie.

  • Yes we have achieved great things with our brains : 2 world wars plus many civil wars, millions have died of hungry, violence and simple diseases. in some countries people live just till around 40 years old, most children are growing with extrangers, most women dont brestfeed anymore, people knows the name of big brands but got no idea of their own local history..most people dont know the names of trees, of animals, of rivers..we have to pay even for going to the toilet..It is very impresing !!

  • wow I posted that more than a year ago, thanks for the reply though.

I now think about what you tell me, it's not like a revelation or anything friend, we see that everyday...and it only gets worse, doesn't it?

  • yes people are getting in a kind of collective amnesie for the worst..very sad...

  • third

  • Sign me up!

  • If you add more neurons, wouldn't you be able to re-learn your wife's name again?

  • @jungenbum yes, but you won't know x is your wife.

    *wakes up at night.*

"Hey who the **** are YOU?!"

  • More like... "Oh yeah, what a score. Time to leave the scene (or kick her out)" :P
