The prupose of a nuclear weapon is not to use it, but to have the potential that one could use it. Simply by having nukes a nation gains a certain control over others plus a war against a nation owning nukes is by far more unlikely than a war against a nation that does not have them. A great example is North Korea. Ever since they claimed to have successfully tested their first nuke the whole matter with them became significantly silent.

Well I am German. My country does not have nukes and there is no imminent danger that another country could use them against us plus I have a very high trust in the technologies used here.

This makes it hard for me to put myself in your position. Still I think that no country would actually start a war that might turn into a nuclear hlocaust. Afterall everybody knows that there are no winners and that the first strike will be followed by a counterstrike.
