Just because the Chinese govt arbitrarily says that they are theirs, doesn't make it so. The question is whether US wanted to betray its WWII ally China and conspire with Japan to start another war. Japanese killed 30 million Chinese, and most Chinese want the blood debt be repaid. It makes no sense for US to meddle in such disputes and draw the anger of Chinese, China and Japan had things to settle long before US existed.
