Best fucking interview. Nick looks so relaxed and let his defensive guard down, seeing as how Roy and HG weren't asking ridiculous questions and skipping around like many people do. They talk about serious things and still have room for laughs. I didn't cringe a bit! So thank god for this.
1:13 Sadness as an essential part of one's character: a more enlightened person might find it impossible to agree, feeling it but part of the smorgasboard of possibilitiesand never a wholistic, no matter how dominant it may seem to some, especially at earlier stages of intellectual development and the expansion of the horizon's of one's soul. Compassion and empathy, perhaps they are more wholistic, phonemically speaking.
I've always wondered what I would say if interviewed like this.. put under a microscope.. so to speak. Nick cave killed this interview.. and made me like his character even more. I would hope if ever interviewed I would have the tact and character to answer this thoughtfully. Well done nick... one of our times great minds.
despite Caves' dopiness, it's a great interview simply because Cave came out punching, and in the end realised these guys aren't idiots. It's tough being in the rock scene and being treated as a 'serious artist' because it's such a populist, pulpy, available and egalitarian art-form, but Nick cave talking simple intellectualism is alot more interesting than Sting talking about Nabakov or Tantric sex with Warnie. I mean Warnie really should have glassed the cunt.
im irish and i dont think anyone has ever danced in the street when somebody dies, that old cunt must be thinking of the quiet man or some fictional account of irishness
First thing. Cave is pinned to his eyeballs and is extremely nervous. He's too cool to take the piss as he's trying to 'see through' the Aussie- take-the-piss nature of Roy and HG, problem is, they are just as smart as he is and he's coming across as a self important twat. There's a big difference between Nick Cave and Serge Gainsbourg, heroin makes you a turd no matter how you slice and dice it.
@ShlomirBareket it was a matter of building mutual respect, which they had by the end of the interview. Nick Cave isn't a sweet guy, and he wouldn't be honest if he tried. Is he too cool, or just detached by the drug? Your criticism seems to require both.
I agree with everyone else, this has to be the best Nick Cave interview I've ever seen. See, he's not an arsehole - just don't ask stupid questions media people!
The negative of Englebert humperdink (5:00)...I never liked Englebert (5:25)...ha ha ha! I actually know who that is, and I can't believe that Englebert is actually his name! I mean, it isn't, but it is...look him up. Ha ha ha, Nick Cave's the best! (oh, and, by the way, does anyone know how to write out a laugh on a youtube comment without sounding like a complete moron (like lol or ha ha ha or knee slap knee slap or ho ho ho)?
HG, whatta guy, so humble he offers 4 & 20 pie to the Black Crow King, in a way that makes my heart sing for joy at the erudite nature of the True Blue buoy&sea. Which is not to forget Roy nor Nicky boy.
That might as well be the dictionary definition of how to do an interview. Roy and HG asked all the right questions, clearly did their homework and came off as very charismatic. Awesome interview!
All three were on a par Roy and HG knew what shots to fire too. Infact they put N Cave on the spot, ha ha. What's Nick Cave trying to prove smoking on TV?

Roy and HG's style is amusing, but they are absolutely shit interviewers. Rather than calmly draw out answers from Nick, they launch double-barreled inquiries. For anyone schooled in media, this is VERY bad practice.
I actually think these two are the perfect people to interview someone like Nick Cave. They're laid back and humorous enough to get him to relax and dig themselves out of any lulls in the conversation (I agree totally that Roy's reaction to the smoking was inspired) but Roy also has the artistic and cultural knowledge required to remain on a similar level to Cave intellectually.
Roy Slaven AKA John Doyle is the best interviewer this country has, Thinking on the spot and letting Nick smoke and calm him down for the interview and allowing him to be more relaxed shows how much of a thinker he is, Love Roy Slaven to bits, bring Back Club Buggery
I don't see the discomfort. A few good questions, a few bad ones, one or two surreal ones, not worth answering. But all in all, Nick goes with the flow lightheartedly, but tries to answer the question- and they interview him well.
Classic interview!!!! Master interviewers Roy & HG are such softies here! They must really like Nick because they took it so easy on him. They got some really good stuff out of Nick, even though he looks uncomfortable. <3 Roy & HG but <3<3<3 Nick Cave!!!! What a honey. Long live grinderman!
Thanks so much for this one. The two gentlemen almost made Nick laughing and then to continue with an interview of that deepness and sensitivity. Brilliant ....
Damn, that was the most coherent interview I've ever seen with Nick... I think only Roy and H.G's quick wit saved them from some sharp nosedives. Big thanks for the post.

Good interviewers, they understand how important Cave's art is and at the same time they can push him and they are very funny.

Roy & HG are morons, and look like it, in this toe-curling interview. Nick Cave is way ahead of them and they all know it, hence the discomfort.
