The story Shane tells here about the occupation of the church by the poor is so relevant to what is currently going on at St Paul's Cathedral in London, over the cathedral's decision to take action against the 99% protest camp on its grounds. Revd Giles Fraser's courageous and self-sacrificing resignation as canon of St Paul's Cathedral two days ago, because of his opposition to a police eviction, is totally in tune with what Shane is saying here. I wonder if they know about each other?
Remember the great story where Peter stole land from the local synagogue? Or the one where Paul was convicted by Christ to build houses for needy families? Or what about in the Old Testament, where Elijah praised the prophets of Baal for how well they treated the poor?
Jesus wants to build a kingdom, but he needs your help! Drop the Bibles, quit your praying, and go do temporary things to ease the lives of damned souls!
@TheWindowIsTranspare Remember the believers sharing what they had between them? God commanding us to protect the widowed, orphaned, & oppressed? Paul boasting in Christ, not himself?
God said to spread the good news of His kingdom - He chose us as the messengers. But we are only able if we read His revelations word, ask His advice, follow His example. Remember Jesus healing in the Fathers' name? The Apostles healing in Jesus'?
Perhaps we should leave sarcasm for God's rebuking of selfishness?
"this is the love that we're talking about, not the sentimental love of story tales, this is the love that keeps you up at night, that's harsh and dreadful and aches inside of us"
So he said this was from Dostoevsky? Does anybody know where?
Haha I love what he said about St. Francis... I describe Shane Claiborne to people as a modern, Protestant St. Francis. :) I really love listening to him speak and I want to really accept the challenge Jesus made to live total radical Christian lives. I'm a Catholic and I love the Catholic Church (wanna come home?), but I'm so glad that all believers are learning to be able to come together like in so many of the stories Shane tells.
I think he'd be assumed by your comment - what other "perspective" that the Word and Way of Jesus would Shane preach?? :)
One of the reassuring things about this guy is how consistent and clear his intent is whether he's giving a sermon, interview or engaged in dialogue, in a world full of distractions.
Whenever I have a bad day I listen to Shane on YouTube and feel better every time....
@RussianDivas i agree. lol im always depressed... except when i hear the Word straight frm God. :) lol and Shane and my gramma r the only ppl who ik of who hear it. :)
is it me or is Shane repeating his same story over and over? I Love the guy and love his book and vision for Christians, but yeah, looking forward to hearing some newer perspectives!
@Xpedite Well I would think God will give him a fresh Word when the "world" FINALLY comprehends this one. Its the sad truth. How can we move to the future if we can't accept the present? Jesus gave Shane's message over 2000 years ago and we still don't get it!
@Xpedite He is probably repeating himself because people are still not gettting it. Hes repeating himself so he can still direct change because alot of us still arnt listening. I think we make the bible so complex sometimes but its really simple-Love God and love your neighbor. The rest God will make clear to you, the things like giving to the poor and clothing the needy.
@laurenshoebob - I get what you mean, but perhaps I didn't explain it well enough. I just think we should be finding fresh expressions of this, fresh messages of the message to share with people who are all different, reaching them where they are at, Shane does an amazing job. I just find it interesting when speakers give the same talk over and over with little change. Much love.
@Xpedite I concur. However, most people haven't read his books or heard him speak, and for that reason, I think these stories (which I myself have heard repeatedly) are life-changing for most people, just as they were for me the first time I heard them.
@laurenshoebob Finally one person that understands what Jesus was talking about. The whole bible can be summed up in this one command that Jesus gave.Love the Lord your God with all your heart and sole and your neighbor as yourself. If you do this you have obeyed all of the ten commandments. So simple nothing complex.
