Although I do miss the NHL on ESPN, I don't miss Gary Thorne one bit. This guy was such a Rangers homer back in the day it was annoying as hell to me I turned the volume off. The year before the "Nordiques" moved to Colorado to become the Avalance, and was blessed with Patrick Roy as they went on to with the first of 2 Stanley Cups they would win with Roy. But now, the Colorado Avalanche don't look anything like Championship Team they were way back when.
Gone are Foote, Deadmarsh, Heyduk and of course Patrick Roy.
@msgoldoche2 If the NHL were to bring a Franchise back to Quebec City, Quebec. Would they rename that team the Nordiques? I heard rumors that the Islanders are going to Quebec. Is that true?
@Jiltedin2007 no team has been chosen might be phoenix or florida not sure but they would be 100% sure to be named the nordiques again if they do comeback
@msgoldoche2 Obviously so. The Nordiques go as far back as the old WHA days. All we need is to move someone to Hartford, call them the Whalers and we'd be perfect as far as the WHA merger goes.
The 4 WHA teams that merged into the NHL in 1979, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Quebec and Hartford.
@gswgswgsw2 Is he? How long has he played for? He was a part of Colorado's last Stanley Cup 10 years ago. He must have been playing for plenty of years in Colorado.
I love that old style intro ESPN used to do... Something else I miss were the National Hockey Night advertisements that ran around 1995. I remember Ken Daneyko being in a hilarious ad.
like now the nhl as the new winter classic ive been hearing from people i know that espn really wants to cover the winter classics and to see this write up for prove here it is blueshirtbanter
if you look up will espn return to NHL i saw a website that as a write up saying the contract of versus and NBC is to end 2010/2011 season and espn/abc are wanting to buy that contract from NBC/Versus so prob buy fall of 2011 ESPN Hockey Night Might be returning so i bet gary throne will be back in a hockey rink this fall along with ABC wanting to buy the nhl also from nbc and versus
@waterdrinker9 You might get your wish! The Jets are back in Winnipeg and maybe the Islanders will move to Quebec since there is a chance they may not have an arena on Long Island.
@murdt61 Islanders will not go to quebec. There is a better chance the coyotes end up there next season if an owner can't be found to keep them in the desert. Bettman doesn't want the league to run that team anymore. He's said if an owner can't be found to keep them in phoenix, then they will be moved if an owner from another city wants to move them. Plus glendale won't throw down more cash to cover the operating losses again like they have for this year.
@Godpuppet26 I think that would really throw the NHL into disarray because right now the Western Conference might be sending two teams to the Eastern Conference next season after they get the Jets. If the Coyotes move to Quebec City, the NHL might have to do it all over again. But if we don't want to see that, I think that as NHL fans we might have to hope for the team to get an owner that wants to keep the team in Phoenix.
Then the Nordiques wouldn't have been half as good. The compenstation that the Nords recieved for Lindros far outweighs what Lindros himself could have done.
god i fucking hate the Rangers. Nordiques should have won the Cup that year as they proved the next season...unfortunately they were the Avalanche that season

Lastly, unlike you, I don't mind Emrick but, I don't think he is on VS anymore. I only hear him on NBC.
@SYLFan2008 well in my area where they play msg plus hes always commentating the devils games and i get tired of it because it seems like he's everywhere. I am a flyers fan but i just enjoy hockey so i'll watch rangers islanders devils...any hockey i get.
@MikeForbess : They still wouldn't have won. Nordiques would've never been able to acquire Roy from a hated division rival nor would've been able to deal the likes of Kovalenko, Rucinsky, and Thibault (chump change, really) for Roy and Keane. It's safe to say, Roy was a monster for the Avs in both their cup runs. Sorry, to burst your bubble, but that's a fact.
@doriamedina It's funny because he's the commentator in the video game NHL 11 and everybody want him to be replaced lol, he's been here for like 3 or 4 years now. Still, he's a great commentator!
@doriamedina I watched the Vancuver game tonight... and it was definitely Gary Thorne calling it. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just agreeing with you. Tonight was nice.
how can you say it's terrible coverage? they get some of the best play by play guys in the league (doc emerick, that benanatti guy from the caps) as well as analysts who know what the hell they're talking about (englom, clement, john stevenson/peter laviolette)...unlike melrose who is a biased, uninformed twat...im a big hockey fan and i have no problem with versus..what exactly do you not like about it?
The Rangers ended hockey in Quebec. This was the final 6 games ever for the Quebec Nordiques. The next year they won the Stanley Cup ... in Colorado :(
@FAITHandLOGIC Quebec City is waaay too small to support an NHL team compared to Atlanta's demographics. When the Thrashers were actually good they had a top 15 turnout. I would say wait to see if they can put together a formidable team before stealing a team from the South once again.
Actually I live in Atlanta and no one gives a shit about the team. NO ONE!
People only go to games when they get free tix. told people that they may be losing the team and they didn't care.
I don't care how big a market is. What really matters is the hockey market. There isn't one in Atlanta. Move 'em to QC or Hamilton. I don't care. Just put the teams back up north where people actually watch it.
@bigravensfan21 Quebec does have the Canadiens... but Quebec CITY (2 hours drive north of Montreal) is where the Nordiques were located. Population 715,500. The Colisée's only current team is the Quebec Ramparts.. a Junior hockey team... and they average over 10,000 fans per game. Playoff games sell out the Colisée (15,750 seats). Those numbers are unheard of in Junior hockey. They really love their hockey over there. I say bring em back.
It pleases me to read some americans who remember "Les Nordiques". I'm from Québec city and i didin't know our team was loved in the states.
We are true hockey fans who really want our team back. Thrust me, we are going to get back in the NHL !!! It's just a matter of time. We must be patient.
Je peux te jurer que les Molson tremblent de peur qu'un jour les Nordiques revienne. Ce ne sera plus la même chose. En ce moment le CH est une machine à fric. Ils vont tellement regretter d'avoir acheté ce club là 600 millions.
Holy shit! ESPN recognized hockey once.

Had the Nordiques stayed in Quebec for one more year the City of Quebec would of been Stanley Cup Champions...

To think had the Nordiques stayed in Quebec for one more year...
MikeForbess 1 year ago
@MikeForbess : They still wouldn't have won. Nordiques would've never been able to acquire Roy from a hated division rival nor would've been able to deal the likes of Kovalenko, Rucinsky, and Thibault (chump change, really) for Roy and Keane. It's safe to say, Roy was a monster for the Avs in both their cup runs. Sorry, to burst your bubble, but that's a fact.

I miss Gary Thorne calling the games!

@doriamedina Yes he was great, but Mike Emrick is doing a greate job filling in his huge shoes.

@doriamedina me too. FUCK VERSUS.
They are so biased, it caterers to the "I wuw Sid the kid, and Ovy, because thats the only hockey players i know" audience. Not the true hockey fans.
ESPN is pro.
Get Clement and Thorne. But it least i can here them be awesome in NHL 10. ):
C'MON ESPN. Hockey just isn't the same, i mute versus

I miss hockey on ESPN it suxs on versus horrible coverage
retroguy1976 1 year ago 35
how can you say it's terrible coverage? they get some of the best play by play guys in the league (doc emerick, that benanatti guy from the caps) as well as analysts who know what the hell they're talking about (englom, clement, john stevenson/peter laviolette)...unlike melrose who is a biased, uninformed twat...im a big hockey fan and i have no problem with versus..what exactly do you not like about it?

The Rangers ended hockey in Quebec. This was the final 6 games ever for the Quebec Nordiques. The next year they won the Stanley Cup ... in Colorado :(

Move Phoenix back to Winnipeg and Atlanta to Quebec City.
FAITHandLOGIC 2 years ago 9
@FAITHandLOGIC Quebec City is waaay too small to support an NHL team compared to Atlanta's demographics. When the Thrashers were actually good they had a top 15 turnout. I would say wait to see if they can put together a formidable team before stealing a team from the South once again.
static56um 1 year ago
Actually I live in Atlanta and no one gives a shit about the team. NO ONE!
People only go to games when they get free tix. told people that they may be losing the team and they didn't care.
I don't care how big a market is. What really matters is the hockey market. There isn't one in Atlanta. Move 'em to QC or Hamilton. I don't care. Just put the teams back up north where people actually watch it.

I LOVED the Nordiques!!!! Quebec better get a team back soon,I miss the old rivalry with the habs
mike761266 2 years ago 3
Um, doesn't Quebec have a hockey team in the Montreal Canadiens?
bigravensfan21 2 years ago
@bigravensfan21 Quebec does have the Canadiens... but Quebec CITY (2 hours drive north of Montreal) is where the Nordiques were located. Population 715,500. The Colisée's only current team is the Quebec Ramparts.. a Junior hockey team... and they average over 10,000 fans per game. Playoff games sell out the Colisée (15,750 seats). Those numbers are unheard of in Junior hockey. They really love their hockey over there. I say bring em back.

humm....Quebec city is not Montreal.

Because Bettman balked at ESPN's offer to renew and thought he could get more elsewhere without sacrificing its audience...he was wrong...
