Check out We Were Here, which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary chronicles gay life in San Francisco before and after AIDs hit. It's excellent!
@penthouse66: aaaahhhhhh........someone has been doing his homework. You're right! There was a government document dated June 9th, 1969 in which Dr. Donald MacArthur stated, "it should be possible in the next few years to develop an infectious agent that destroys the body's immune defenses."
1 year later the DOD received 10 million dollars to fund the development of this "new infectious agent".
wow if some of these people were alive today they would be 50-80 years old. I wonder how many people were getting sick and dying before they recognized it in 1981?
@bt1271 Like Randy Shilts wrote...."to be sure, Death was already elbowing it's way through the crowds on that sunny morning. It was still an invisible presence, though, palpable only to 20, or perhaps 30, gay men who were suffering from a vague malaise".
Statistically, in the US, there were 30 AIDS deaths in 1980, 110 in 1981, etc. By the time it was recognized in 1981, many thousands were already infected.
It is said that AIDS hit the gay community so hard because of the high rate of sexual encounters with different partners that gay men usually have, specially during the 70's. But it is still hard to explain for me, WHY gay men. Even in isolated cases identified many years before this parade. Search about Robert R., who died of aids in 1969 and bisexual violinist Herbert Heinrich who was infected in 1975 and died in 1980.
@cobolsaurus Why gay men? Because they were infected with the laboratory-created AIDS virus via the hepatitis B vaccine experiment in Manhattan. 1083 gay men were injected with it from Nov. 1978 to Oct. 1979. The same thing was done in SF, Denver, LA, Chicago and St Louis from Mar. 1980 to Oct. 1981. The rest is history.
This is not theory. It is documented fact. There are actual Gov. documents requesting the creation of an artificial agent that would destroy the immune system.
I am a Canadian, then living in Montreal. I had just come out months before & had 2 go 2 SF for a music master class@ Stanford. There, I met a fellow class attendant,Suzanne. She asked me to come in town as she would be in the SF Gay Freedom Marching Band @ Gay pride. I was there in my late teens at THIS 1980 parade getting so emotional at all the gay organizations and visiting the Castro and Polk. I went home empowered and completely free of shame and have never looked back since..
A gay teacher in New York City died from AIDS in 1980. Ken Horne went to the CDC the very same year. There were some ealier cases of gay men getting sick in 1978, 1979. So mid to late 70s gay men are falling ill, and 1980s-1990s gay men are dying from AIDS.

didn't anybody of them ever know about safe sex?
tomidlak 2 years ago
@tomidlak You're either very young or very stupid. Safe sex came as a result of the AIDS epidemic. Therefore, there was no safe sex before AIDS.

You know what? It's no damn big deal now to like your same sex. You are gay....so what.
Straight people should have "I like the opposite sex" parades.

Since then, huge gay "ghettos" have sprung up in Canada's main cities with Gay Pride attendance in my university town, Toronto
now reaching 1 million and gay marriages and adoptions being fully legal.
We've come a long way!!!

Gaetan Dugas worked way before I was hired but I do know some of the older women who did. They said he was really a fun guy to work with.

Thats great footage, its also the last pre-AIDS pride parade in SF.

It was one year before AIDS was being recognised as such. AIDS had already infected people and some where already dying.
This is just one year before the OFFICIAL epidemic.

I wonder how many people here are dead
gaguy1967 3 years ago
I don't know but if you look at the scale of the catastrophy.. I wouldn't be too surprised if a lot of them died during the 1980's and 90's.
AmersfoortTristan 3 years ago
I hate to think of that, but it's true. The AIDS epidemic hit the gay community so badly. Let's never forget that!
