@thechanman16 It's something that went on in the early 90s when a commercial break was going to go on where the fire hydrant was a bully to the dog. Here the fire hydrant licked the dog, in another one the fire hydrant said "after these messages" and sprayed the dog with water and then said "will be right back, and another one the dog announced "after these messages" and the fire hydrant roared and grew and scared the dog away with the fire hydrant saying "will be right back."
Umm Popeye didn't sellout he was promoting oatmeal for breakfast. It would be odd for him to promote spinach for breakfast considering the fact not too many kids eat spinach for breakfast .
@maxwestcomics He-Man would be good since he's got big muscles like Popeye but, I guess the reason why they had Popeye for this commercial was because, on the cartoons it showed Popeye eating spinach whenever he was going to make himself stronger when he was going to fight Bluto. Maybe they wanted to show Popeye eating other stuff since oatmeal can make you strong like spinach. (The Real Ghostbusters and Papa Smurf don't look muscular which is why they're not on this commercial)
Comic actor and mimic:Billy West does "Popeye's"voice here..BTW:This is not the first time that"The Old Sailor"promoted hot cereal instead of Spinach..during the 1930's on"The Popeye Radio Show"..he promoted"Wheatina".
Popeye didnt sell out. Kids love popeye and kids like oat meal. So basically popeye +quaker oats+fun cartoon= happy healthy kids= big increase in stock for quaker oats= more money.
Stop and think, the next time you eat a Quaker Oats product. In the late 1940s and again in the early 1950s, breakfast food containing minute amounts of radioactive iron and calcium was fed to a number of students at the Walter E. Fernald School, a Massachusetts institution for "mentally retarded" children. The National Institutes of Health, the Atomic Energy Commission, and the Quaker Oats Company funded the research.
This commercial hasn't been seen since 1989 because the Fraternal Order of Quakers objected to Popeye using force to solve a problem and to Olive's permissiveness.
yeah your'e not really supposed to..it's one of those random material solutions (i.e. if i had a brand new car..i could get girls..) you probably won't..and if you did it would eithe r be to drive thecar or drive them around..
This has to be the best-looking piece of Popeye animation produced ever since the theatrical shorts ended. Heck, I think it's actually even better-looking than the theatrical shorts!
And I'd have to agree with the other guy's comment, especially what with the semi-recent contaminated spinach story.
Ummm what was that at the beginning.

I know the aim here was to get Popeye to convince kids to eat oatmeal. But why him? Why not He-Man or the Real Ghostbusters or Papa Smurf?

In Popeye's defense, who the heck eats spinach for breakfast? That's why he advertised Start, an old minute-maid type frozen orange drink.
