Obviously you didn't say too much and it did make perfect sense. *My* concern would go beyond pop-up ads and banner ads to the point where YouTube would decide on having "premium accounts" by means of which the user would be restricted in any number of ways unless they paid an actual fee for using YouTube. I'd be profoundly pissed off at seeing pop-ups and banners but I'd certainly say, "Fuck this!" if I had to pay YouTube directly for full use of what it now affords me.
The debate over in-video advertising on YouTube is particularly interesting because it illustrates our changing expectations for the way in which we consume media. YouTube, and really the internet as a whole, follow a model in which one seeks out the media one wants to consume. This has many benefits, but one of the more remarkable observations I've made is that consumers of online video will seek out and watch ads that they choose to
but revolt against the idea of ads being thrust upon them without their explicit consent (that is, overlay ads in the middle of YouTube videos instead of YouTube videos that are straight-up ads). This is a trend that can be seen across new media (such as in the case of DVR, which enables users to skip ads entirely and get to the content they want to see more quickly).
Of course, this would point to the argument that our society is becoming more and more averse to delayed gratification. Is getting what you want faster automatically a bad thing? And if it is, how, if at all, can it be avoided in terms of emerging media?
well i think that's annoying, i haven't seen any advirtising pop up, but yeah, the whole idea is just bad.
i think youtube could come up with very good ideas to get some extra money.
they could make a special button to receive donations, also as i know you can't upload looong video, so why not creating special accounts for anyone who pays for them, where you can upload an hour long video.
finally, youtube is full of product commercials, so they should ask for commisions.
at first i thought you meant like i clikc on your vid and you say 'hi everyone is me ag- HAVE YOU BEEN INJURED! call this number and we will do nothing about it -and im just talking crap so im gonna go, GOODBYE everybody *fist* :P
I agree that they should find the root of the problem with lawsuits, but if not, put them at the END of the videos. I'd be annoyed as well if they were at the beginning, and only slightly less annoyed if they were DURING the video.
there aren't any banners on here for me. but anyway, i'd rather have the translucent on the bottom of the video than to have it at the beginning. so many sites with videos have advertisements before the video you want to watch, and half the time it's so annoying that i leave and go to another site. being at the end of the video wouldn't be so bad, but really i agree with you about hiring someone to look for copyrighted videos. it's not like it would be hard to do.
dead on on the lyrics websites thing..they piss me off to high heaven.
i wonder if for example, if i watch a video with an advert in it, and then rewatch it (wait till it finishes and then press play again) will i get the same advert at the same point again? if i don't, i'd just wait till it finishes and rewatch it again so i can watch a music video clip undisturbed.
I explained the good and bad points of the new system in this video, but you obviously didn't pay any attention, since slagging people off is at the front of your mind. I even posed alternatives, so I can't quite work out what your problem is. Needless to say, I don't need people like you watching my videos, nor commenting on them, so blocked thou art.
Am only 56 seconds into your video, and am wondering whether the report you saw indicated that "For now, Google will place the ads only on video clips of its content partners — the more than 1,000 small and large media companies that have licensed their videos to YouTube. By doing so, YouTube will avoid the potential liability of having ads appear on copyrighted clips it is not authorized to display. [continued]
what if the video is only 15 seconds long? i love the idea for having the advert at the end of the video instead of the replay, share screen. the banner ads i hardly notice so they could stay. plus if YT could find a way for product placement that would help them.
There's also a difference between entertaining, interesting ads and boring, badly made, off-topic ads (and I hate those camouflaged scam-ads and such).
I'd rather have the signs at the sides of the road, than in the middle of the road. And definitely not inside the car.
Prerolls - Makes the user wait (whether or not the ad is being watched or not), even though there's no technical reason for it (unlike TV where programs are scheduled, commercials in the middle of a program still sucks though).
InVideo Ads - Any advertising that is shown within/over the content is definitively very intrusive. This includes In-text advertising (those pesky double lined links) and of course pop-ups of any kind (which blocks the content view).
another suggestion...I have seen this being done already by some posters. In the description area, post links to the artists, record company's, etc. I noticed that even company's like Warner Brothers, CBS, NBC are doing this on YouTube.
A suggestion... How about if youtube puts a SMALL image on the lower corner of a copyrighted video, like TV stations do for their logo. This link would be small enough to maybe be unobtrusive, BUT would link to maybe the artist's site OR the record copmpany's site. This way only the copyrighted videos would be affected.
YouTube is always doing more to disinterest me. This is no different. I find I watch less and less. Ads will be the kiss of death for me, but that is just me.
I just have to say that FX(TV channel) is doing a similar thing already, but with sound, and it is THE most annoying advertisement I've seen other than unclosable popups. What's worse though is that they're all adverts for the same thing--a new show ON THAT CHANNEL.
I do not think it's a good idea to have adverts pop up in the middle of a video. If there's one thing I absolutely detest about TV it's the obnoxious pop ups that glide up to tell you what program you are watching as well as to tell you what's on next or what's on tomorrow, next week or next month. Just leave me alone and let me watch the programme!
YouTube exists to show videos and post videos. YouTube makes money by advertising. There's a difference between the two, and it's very difficult finding a balance.
I agree entirely. It would be bothersome. I am a debater and I think your argument is well thought out and researched. Your solutions are also perfectly viable and intelligent. Thank you for being serious about this issue and not just posting a whiney "ZOMG THIS ZUX00RS!" vid..... althought the Viagra thing was funny ^_^
It should be enough to be easily able to find a product/service if you are looking for it. But all advertising to get people to buy what they don't want or need is a negative thing to say the least.
A good product service sells itself. Also equilibrium is the key word instead of eternal growth.
Only if you are offering special deals this sort of advertising would be a option. But then it should be done at the and not during.
You could find a thousand copy-righted videos in an hour? All four major record companies (Universal, Sony BMG, EMI & Warner) allow their music videos on YouTube. They object to people posting their TV shows and even films in segments on YouTube, hardly unreasonable is it? As for adverts at the end of videos who's going to watch them? No one. Google paid £1.7 billion for YouTube is it any surprise they have to recover the costs? Welcome to real life.
I wholeheartedly agree, at least then the adverts wouldn't spoil or obscure any part of the video. All these people threatening to leave YouTube over this need to realise video sharing web-sites are a privilege not a right!
It's not a right, but it's in the company's best interest not to lose people from the website ― less visitors, less revenue, less advertisement success, less money.
Those with crappy comps (like I do) have to wait for the video to finish loadin to see it all. That's annoyin enough. Waiting on ads before waitin for vids is exponentially annoyin. If there are gonna be ads anywhere near vids, they should be at the end. That's where most check if there are any more interestin vids. Msnvids do that "ad before the show" thing and that's why I can't watch those anyway cuz of the wait. Those that have awesome comps, who knows. That's just my take on it for now.
Before they make these stupid averts that almost no one likes, why not make banners? Banners are less annoying and people will not be as disturbed. Such as on the sides where "director videos" are or just on the bottom or on the top somewhere.
Not a good idea, for one the advertiser may not wish to be associated with a user's video, or vice versa. ex. Ford wouldn't want to pay for a Honda fan vid or a Muslim wouldn't want an ad for pork to pop-up.
Is YouTube going to place adverts in a logical or random fashion?
They would be served better by small banner ads or images on the page, not a pop-ups in a video. It will get annoying very quickly. I would rather have email spam once a day from YouTube than spam in videos.
instead of having everybody searching for the copyrighted videos, it seems like they could screen videos before they actually get posted. if the video contains copyright infringement, youtube could just shut down the video before it is publicly seen. although this would cause a delay between the time a video is submitted and the time it is actually seen by viewers, i would prefer to wait a few hours to watch someone's new video than see advertisements in every one.
I think it's going to be extremely annoying and intrusive. This is my opinion as a viewer and as a video maker. I absolutely hate the idea, and I think it will make YouTube much less enjoyable to visit, and ultimately be destructive for YouTube as a whole. I do however quite like your idea of an ad coming at the end of a video before Play Again and links to other videos come up.
I haven't read every one of them comments so far. But. . .
Do you think YouTube are going to extend the size of the video to add these banner advertisements in? I most definately hope they do. But I can't wait for these to be put into action and then see the almighty retaliation by the WHOLE of YouTube.
That would work for me. The bottom could lower to display the advertisement and after 10 seconds or if the close button is clicked, the bottoms raises.
That sucks a lot! I know that they want to make money, not just break even, but chances are they'll be way under breaking even if all these companies win their lawsuits (like Viacom's billion-dollar one). Nevertheless, it'd certainly help at least, and they could probably widdle their way around the DMCA somehow.
Blunty3000 has a bad history and he just filed a DMCA aganst a non-partner with a high sub rate in retaliation for a complaint regarding his salicious use of the "boob" shots and "cock in a sock" which he lost. Then two other vloggers did the same thing to another vlogger which makes using DMCA for infighting as bad a problem as from the outside. Not good for widdling.
Something important about these ads that I didn't comment this morningg after you first posted your vid because I've never commented on your vids: these ads are only going on select content provders vids
for example: BMW channel or universalmusicgroup, etc. I don't know about "partners" like boh3m3. It's not on all or random vids of the average youtuber...
I understand that, but content partners are some of the most-watched channels on the website (I'm subscribed to several), which means it still very much applies. I know that there's one on a smosh video (or so a website says), so it could be that they go on videos from people like boh3m3, blunty3000, etc.
are you aware that CNET has an article on this and has quoted your video and your usename with a link to your video? I'll PM you the link to the video...(I'm a U.S. sub of yours)
I don't have any more keyboards to beat up! I might go out and buy another crappy £5 one from somewhere, but I dunno. I already did 2 videos beating up a keyboard; I don't want to do too many sequels ;)
Agreed about the "second solution";) I guess, the other two ways just wouldn't be so effective or at least possible ( especially if speaking about finding another way of making money)) )=D
I'm pretty sure they do have staff checking out videos...I'm not sure why its not more efficient. Maybe they only go through the videos other people have flagged?
you haven't known me for that long.. and yeah I am a curse.. just you wait.. oh and it's not feminine, he's more manly than you I bet.. :P wow that was evil, huh. >:D
nah, you ARE jealous 'cause he has a better hair-style than you :P can't win against me, sunshine, you're cursed with knowing me in real.. muuhahahahaha.
Especially if you have a list of the big companies that threaten lawsuit, and find out what kind of material they produce, it won't be hard to find and delete the videos. Just don't delete whole accounts because of one video like they did me!
That sucks :/ I suppose it's okay to delete the user accounts if the user only has copyrighted videos, because chances are they'd just upload more copyrighted videos. It's tough but it's the only way of stopping people :/
Nah, definitely not ruined. I just think that it's a bad idea, and if it goes badly YouTube might end up taking it away. It all depends on whether or not they have the users at heart, as opposed to the money, but it is a business so money's a pretty important thing.
:?( i was makeing a point that you whatch alot of vids and btw the opionion on this bassicly would be that... << if there just getting sued so often why dont they just do your idea
i'd rather have no adverts at all - neither in the video nor in the web site. therefore i prefer to have a paid account as an alternative to getting annoyed by ads.
Who the hell is marking this as spam?!

It seems easier, and more beneficial to youtube to find a way of removing copyrighted videos -- as you said it's not exactly hard.
However, that maybe getting rid of a main reason people log onto you tube - to find clips from their favourite tv show or film, or what have you.
Therefore using advertising to make up for the money is a better solution.
But as you have also said, there are many ways in which the advertising can be hightened, but remain unintrusive. I think that is the way forward.

I know that they want to make money, not just break even, but chances are they'll be way under breaking even if all these companies win their lawsuits (like Viacom's billion-dollar one). Nevertheless, it'd certainly help at least, and they could probably widdle their way around the DMCA somehow.
nuodai 4 years ago
Blunty3000 has a bad history and he just filed a DMCA aganst a non-partner with a high sub rate in retaliation for a complaint regarding his salicious use of the "boob" shots and "cock in a sock" which he lost. Then two other vloggers did the same thing to another vlogger which makes using DMCA for infighting as bad a problem as from the outside. Not good for widdling.

Something important about these ads that I didn't comment this morningg after you first posted your vid because I've never commented on your vids: these ads are only going on select content provders vids
jrsnyderjr 4 years ago
for example: BMW channel or universalmusicgroup, etc. I don't know about "partners" like boh3m3. It's not on all or random vids of the average youtuber...
jrsnyderjr 4 years ago
I understand that, but content partners are some of the most-watched channels on the website (I'm subscribed to several), which means it still very much applies. I know that there's one on a smosh video (or so a website says), so it could be that they go on videos from people like boh3m3, blunty3000, etc.

are you aware that CNET has an article on this and has quoted your video and your usename with a link to your video? I'll PM you the link to the video...(I'm a U.S. sub of yours)
jrsnyderjr 4 years ago
Awesome! I've got your PM, I'll read it just now.

for some reason it's not boring to see u talk man!
love urvids. btw, the last solution of puttin the ads at the end of the vids would be nice.
ALSO, puttin the ads right NEXT to the video, like on the opposite side of the description would work too, right?

nuodai 4 years ago
Yea you did the fist again :) anyway I think it would be annoying and you still have not beat up any key board I would like to see that again...
whatsthepiont 4 years ago
I don't have any more keyboards to beat up! I might go out and buy another crappy £5 one from somewhere, but I dunno. I already did 2 videos beating up a keyboard; I don't want to do too many sequels ;)
nuodai 4 years ago
Agreed about the "second solution";) I guess, the other two ways just wouldn't be so effective or at least possible ( especially if speaking about finding another way of making money)) )=D

Milve 4 years ago
It always does that ;) I can turn it off, but if I do it makes the audio go funny.

I'm pretty sure they do have staff checking out videos...I'm not sure why its not more efficient. Maybe they only go through the videos other people have flagged?

JustKylie 4 years ago
Yeah, but I s'pose YouTube has to make its money somehow. No money, no YouTube.

pallas1957 4 years ago 3

nuodai 4 years ago 2
:P yeahh.. but it's cuuute :) suits you lol.
Mantaedel 4 years ago
They probably put a lot of thought into it, but I still think it's a bad idea.
nuodai 4 years ago
and i agree at the end is better or pay user to put in the videos
frankbertrand 4 years ago
I don't think paying the user would save them much money, if any, to be honest :P Just not having them there would be better though.
nuodai 4 years ago
YAY for having too much free time :D

i hope tht doesnt happen tht would be soo annoying ace video
emokid1893 4 years ago
It's almost definitely gonna happen, it's just a question of when, and how long it'll last...
nuodai 4 years ago
Especially if you have a list of the big companies that threaten lawsuit, and find out what kind of material they produce, it won't be hard to find and delete the videos. Just don't delete whole accounts because of one video like they did me!
moderndaymonk 4 years ago
That sucks :/ I suppose it's okay to delete the user accounts if the user only has copyrighted videos, because chances are they'd just upload more copyrighted videos. It's tough but it's the only way of stopping people :/
nuodai 4 years ago
are you Hugh Grant?
faghut 4 years ago
Add 30 years, a posh accent and a crap sense of humour and perhaps. Otherwise, no.
nuodai 4 years ago
ah great a great website completely ruined.
JeeprzCreepers56 4 years ago
Nah, definitely not ruined. I just think that it's a bad idea, and if it goes badly YouTube might end up taking it away. It all depends on whether or not they have the users at heart, as opposed to the money, but it is a business so money's a pretty important thing.
nuodai 4 years ago
T.T havent whatched my vids
Oamanu 4 years ago
T.T haven't stopped spamming.
nuodai 4 years ago
:?( i was makeing a point that you whatch alot of vids and btw the opionion on this bassicly would be that... << if there just getting sued so often why dont they just do your idea
Oamanu 4 years ago
A necessary evil but I think the best so,ution is to put it at the end of the video (riva style).
Interesting that you say you wouldn't want an advert popping up when you start watching a music video... Not a copyrighted one I hope!! heheh
theunforgiving 4 years ago
Shh ;)
nuodai 4 years ago
i'd rather have no adverts at all - neither in the video nor in the web site. therefore i prefer to have a paid account as an alternative to getting annoyed by ads.
manniacmind 4 years ago
I defiantly think video ads in the middle of a video would be totally annoying.
