I agree with most of Carter's points, but he's making shameful use of propaganda techniques. Yes, there's a problem with having different laws for different people. Yes, political debate should be free and open.

But Carter's argument is not openly stated. Essentially he's saying, "Don't blame the Jews, but do. The Jews don't have a stranglehold on foreign policy, but sort of, yeah." It's like saying, "Jimmy Carter isn't inciting hatred, but I do believe antisemitism is a factor in the debate."

The issue is really the Palestinians. not the Americans pushing thru their agenda. if the Palestinian Authority dismantled the Hamas terrorist organization, you would see an Israeli govt ready and willing to make painful compromise for peace. until then, it won't happen. ask yourself this question, if mexico was firing missiles into san diego on a daily basis, do you think our govt would let that happen? they would destroy the threat immediately. israel is doing the same.

Carter has surprisingly very little understanding of the modern conflict in the Middle East. just because he presided over the Israel/Egypt peace treaty, people think he knows what he's talking about. He hasn't got a clue. Until the Palestinians can control their most radical elements, the status quo will continue. The Palestinians have had countless chances for their own state, but have bungled it each time. they need leadership courageous enuf for painful compromise. until then they'l suffer

The issue is the U.S having sufficient political will to push through a workable peace agenda, irrespective of the posturing of extremists on both sides who vehemently oppose harmonious co-existence. It looks like we now have an administration with that intent, and so there is much to be optimistic about. As an aside, continuance of the status quo will produce suffering for us all (the world is a lot smaller now). Failing to recognize that is a dangerous mistake.
