I do not know why people dislike the California episodes. Of course shows change and can become tired as they get older, but there were still many good episodes during the CA seasons. Shirley left unexpectedly because Cindy was having disputes with the producers. The new season was already in production when this happened.
@rcbrad3 I really wish they had found a way not to keep the series on in the 1982 - 83 season when Cindy left or at least renamed it to say, "Just Laverne" after she left.

They seriously should've just killed the show once they left milwaukee, i can't believe they had an entire season without shirley either.
