So, when using this with a single oscillator, would it just cut out the output until you reached the passband? How can you make a filter that would work on a single square wave oscillation that would act as, say, bass mid and treble controls on a stereo? Would you have to have more than a single oscillation because there is only one component to the waveform?
It does sort of cut out the output, certainly makes it quieter when the frequency is out of the range. Check out the datasheet for the LM741- you could do separate bass/mid/treble controls using an LM741 for each, or use a TLO84 or equivalent, that has 4 opamps in a single package.
this thing is so fun I may have to actually build it! I'm trying to think of an easy-to build hardware setup for it. The circuit I can etch to a board and set up as either a kit or assembled...
I hear laughing drunks, crying babies, bats, and a lonely saxophonist. Among many other things. If I were as awesome as you are, I'd build this thing on perfboard and make some sick-ass enclosure for it and make it my freak machine!
ohh my god this is incredible. i just built myself the 556 stepped tone generator with an opto-resistor photocell for one of the the variables—it sounds much less complex than yours, however. would you be able to upload/send me a schematic? the wizard of fuzz needs greater HP.
Thank you! I can work on the schematic, but in the meantime google the 'weird sound generator'- I got a lot of added flexibility with the filter stage... pretty much a worthy add-on for any squarewave doohickey. Replace the pot with an LDR for instant bonus! (Filter stage draws a lot from the 'opamp' section of Mimms' book with the 'ramped tone generator' in it). Get at me if you have more ?
*addendum: this circuits' 556 'stepped tone generator' is exactly the 'atari punk console': or so it says in wikipedia. Apparently I learned something today. APC in wikipedia. Heh, cool.
Thanks, man! Looks great as usual, some very inspirational stuff you have up there. Punk consoles are really cool... Percussion synth... I have a nice percussion circuit I want to try out, but it's a 'dual-rail' power supply (+6, -6VDC), so 1st I have to look into the most effective way of getting THAT together. It's always something.
What type of filter is the 741??

Hey! It's an active bandpass filter.

The 'melodromatron aleatron' is the same circuit in a case...

Terrific! Love the combo music, animal vocalizations and just plain wacky sounds.

it's helpful not to be able to post URLs or images. Not really.
