The problem is that affirmative action has caused a certain degree of paranoia amongst other ethnic groups. There is no such thing as white privilege. It didn't exist for the poor whites working on plantations alongside slaves who were called "white trash" by the house slaves who looked down on them, and it doesn't exist for the poorest whites today who never found their way out from under that label. They all have the exact same opportunity to fail as any black or hispanic.

There is class privilege, and it has nothing to do with race.

I've known plenty of whites in Appalachia who didn't have bathrooms, ate spam, and more, then tried to work their way up in education---no free ride, only to have to play the game of "white privilege," lol. Ideally education should be free at the point of delivery and repaid as deductions from future earnings to provide as even a playing field as possible when applying.

This would create a real meritocracy, and any students flunking out of a course that they were selected for just to get bums on seats wouldn't be unfairly saddled with debt they can't realistically pay off.

@mcwolves71 Actually, the original affirmative action plans (that were actually called affirmative action) were developed by white Californian republicans with the expressed purpose (in the late 60's and 70's) of making specific strides to catch blacks up to the rest of America in home ownership, small business ownership and educational attainment, specifically blacks attending college. The programs were only intended to last 5 years, with the idea being that once the process began...

What makes you think black people wouldn't be able to meet the same standards as whites if we use the same standards? There are no schools that should "only" include whites. Asians and Indians will be there in large numbers, and the smartest blacks will as well. And universities are already dumbing themselves down, though not just because of affirmative action.

I have always felt affirmative action is a form of soft racism that treats race as a disability. And it can leave the individual's abilities open to question by others even if they are supremely qualified. It can actually insight the very thing it proposes to eliminate. True equality of opportunity should only take the characteristics that actually contribute to actual performance.
