Thanks for this video!!! I was about to throw my WM+ to the trash (along with the nice rackets I bought :P)... now I'm starting to win matches online an in the Grand Slam mode.
Great game once you get it. The problem I see is that no ones tell you how to grab the control and that you must return to the center immediately after every shot.
Can you help me?? I just can't hit flat balls... it's alway's topspin or slice.. But the funny thing is that when I want to do a slice it does a topspin.. Thankx!
Mate, you are an absolute star - I completelty couldnt get it - I expected it to justr get me and play like every movement - The recentre thing isnt explained anywhere in the vidoes or books. to test it i've just FINALLY won and was using the motion plus - The tactics have just started coming out - THANKYOU!!!
The big issue is that they don't really tell you that the game re-calibrates every point during the transition between the replay and the next serve so until you figure that out, you'll be having off swings and who knows what else. The other thing is that while the game is theoretically 1:1 the avatar actions aren't like they are in Wii Sports Resort where you get instant visual feedback on your movements, which also probably throws people for a loop too. EA just needs to flesh it out more.
ive been playin this online and not doin well the opponent always seems to have far nore power on the shots than me. do u know how to hit powerful shots?
Are you serious?? Is this why I keep getting owned online by powerful players? I don't have motion +, but I thought it was because I was using my custom player (who doesn't have many stars) and the other guy was using Nadal...
So, does it also matter what Character you are using? I like using my unique custom character... do my abilities I gain in the Career mode also apply to online mode?
I have Virtua Tennis too. 1:1 Virtua Tennis not even close. Grand Slam might take time to learn but it whips Virtua Tennis's 50 ball rallies with creative winners and net play.
I can't play Virtua Tennis after learning Grand Slam.
I enjoyed grand slam when i got into it but there were occasions when i was pulling my WM+ remote back and it took that as a swing, swinging when the ball was nowhere near me. I noticed that when i stood with a high forehand it read that as a backhand and vice versa. When everything works well i enjoy the game but it is too easy to get frustrated with it because you feel cheated on many occasions instead of losing through skill. In my opinion I don't feel cheated on virtua tennis when i lose.
So I have to recenter the controller after EVERY SINGLE SHOT? That's stupid. This is a broken system to me. And people were bitching about having to calibrate the controller after every point in Virtua Tennis. Imagine having to recalibrate the thing after every swing... meh, I'm bummed with this, I guess I will just stick with Tiger Woods...
If you watch the pros they put their racket out in front after every shot. They aren't calibrating anything that is just good technique. Usually video games don't help you improve in the actual sport. "This game actually helps you in tennis because of that very calibration your complaining about."
They could have done it better but this is a great game and really could make you a better tennis player.
Disc golf works perfect, because you have to point to the screen to grab the disc. In that moment sets the reference point.
In GST EA decide to calibrate after each stroke to avoid people pointing to the screen like on Virtua tennis. In ping pong resort you need to point at the screen too. This is the reason because it will work better.
GST is a fantastic game, but if they make you pointing at the screen after every point it could be perfect.
I 've played Wii Sports Resort Table Tennis for a few hours this week. Table Tennis is completely different from GST and much much better! You will see!
Probably because they left it 1:1 and just made handicaps or allowances if the face of the paddle wasn't perfectly flat at contact. EA should have done the same and then allow a full 1:1 mode without handicaps. Would have been sweet!
EA didn't make it 1:1 to make it easier on us(annoying) and to make it easier on to program. It's almost 1:1 up to the swing than they do something else to allow for variability of peoples swings. At that point the motion Plus has no idea where it is so it resynch 's itself after the stroke finishes and hopefully in the true center position, lol. They way EA did it there is no way to stop it from happening. I am just trying to make it work for people by letting them decide where center is.
I am not sure on the limitations other than it is in the way EA implemented motion plus in this game. If you play Tiger Woods and try the disc Golf it never goes out of sync.
Also, they could have just made you press B or something when you were centered or ready before a point.
I agree on the pressing B before a point thing, I'm actually surprised that it WASN'T implemented considering how input sensitive a game like this is. I look at this as first year jitters in a sense, this IS by and large VERY new physical game play mechanics and there's a LOT that has to be taken into consideration. It may take one or two GST games to get it just right as the formula for something like this has yet to be completely discovered.
Great tutorial video, well worth watching for everyone frustrated with how the Motion Plus can control in GST (which would have to be just about all of us then).
This sort of tip would have been worth them putting into the game somewhere, perhaps as a loading screen hint.
Have you been able to beat reasonably tough computer players by following this "return to center" rule? I'm going to have to give this a go, and I'll report back with my findings. Cheers!
Yes I can beat medium difficulty fairly often. I do admit that I am more sloppy during a tight match and just make sure to return to whats reasonable center without the tiny adjustments.
Wow, the change in my game was definitely noticeable. It did lose it a couple of times, but I think that was mostly when I didn't return to center quickly enough after a serve.
The game obviously needs a neutral point of reference, but because it doesn't use the sensor bar, it has to guess it. You might be holding the controller right in front of you, for example, but the game doesn't know that.
Once again, great video. Everyone playing GST with the Motion Plus really needs to check this out.
Interesting point! There is a setting in Sports Resort that says something like "Sensor Bar Assist on/off." It is "ON" unless you change it.
The M+ in Sports Resort does what you expect. As does Tiger Woods. There really is a problem with Grand Slam. It is not just that it is "hard." That's insulting when people say that.
You're holding the wii remote all wrong for this game. You're suppose to hold it by its side...

i get it now...no wonder i was sucking...but the controls can be frustrating...i thought wii motion was suppose to fix such things...
yotaiji012 2 years ago
Motion + does fix these things as I have Wii Sports Resort JP already and calibration is non existent.
EA did this, it was there way of making it sort of 1:1 but not requiring you to be a tennis player to play.

this game looks awesome.. i am soooo getting this over VT09 now. one question though, does the power with which i swing matter in the game?
AliH17 2 years ago
Power of swing does matter. Swing hard enough and you can go for a winner with motion plus which you can't without it.

After controlling the wii motion plus this is a great tennisgame. Calibrating is essential and the swing and timing make
this experience so great. I can't wait for games that are even more precise with such nice gameplay!

A game to avoid as there are no issues with tiger woods or virtua tennis where it actually feels like 1:1 gameplay
Cornfish69 2 years ago
Hmmm.. ok i noticed that I dont have probelms becuase my charater will ajust to the wrong side of the ball on me.
I play with the nunchuck now so I dont see a problem anymore becuase i ajust where my chacter is and what side of the ball he is on.
Without the nunchuck it is amost easier to play without motion plus becuase your character stays on the right side of the ball.

Thanks man! I was very disappointed with WM+ and GrandSlam Tennis but after watching your tutorial I actually can hit the ball where I want.
mrplow75 2 years ago
That is going to be very unprecise gameplay, since the posision of the racket is changing between each hit.
And its a hazle to center it all the time. Trows you off the flow of the game.
It would be better if the game keeps the posision during the whole match.

The calibration should have been made at the very start of the match... Why would anyone want to change his centre position in-between a match?
Still very good explanation of how it works!

Ohhhhh, ok. So, if you keep pointing the remote back to whatever your default position was, your character won't change stances randomly?

nice one - this will probably explain a lot of glitches in many games to come (and gives an idea of WMP's limitations also).
Agree that it should be referenced inside the game.

Remember with motion plus to hold the Wiimote like normal. Buttons facing up and the left side as the forehand racket face.
chrismcam2 2 years ago
@chrismcam2 That is wrong, even the tips during loading say to hold it by its side. So if you're right handed the A button will be to the left side.
