I seriously hate it when Chao Ang Mo-s come and act goody-two-shoes and start speaking about our culture as though they are the only ones that know what's right and wrong, and that their standardshould be the only yardstick to live by. If I can speak proper English to a foreigner, I don't see what's wrong with speaking in our own colloquials at home. And do not even start to criticise our penal system. It's served us well, and why do you even have to worry if you aren't going to break the law?
I laugh when people say that Singlish makes Singaporeans uncompetitive or whatever, because I just recently learned in Geography that Singapore has a high HDI index, along with countries like US and Norway. So how exactly are we uncompetitive?
Every language comes with its own identity in writing and intonation. The miserable way of using English into such grammar, tone and accent is very much annoying to listen, and vomitable to hear.
Singlish comes naturally for Singaporeans. I've tried to lessen my use of Singlish since then my english would get worser.. yeah.. but i failed miserably. =.= try speaking proper english to our friends.. paiseh sia..
FOREIGNERS--VISITORS--TOURISTS STAY AWAY FROM SINGAPORE
Boycott Singapore as its third world government continues it's crimes against humanity.
For nearly 50 years uncivilized savages that run the place commit human rights violations (and get away with these crimes) by perverted Floggings of men and boys, and the disgusting mandatory death penalty. The international community rightfully condemns Singapore for these barbaric acts
GO ELSEWHERE IN ASIA, TRY HONG KONG, BANGKOK, TOKYO, TAIWAN
It is embarrassing how people speak English informally and mistakenly. The grammar and vocabulary are in a mess that would just keep Singapore uncompetitive.
@jarvousfran what's wrong? it's a part of our culture, and i can always switch from my manglish to proper English, it is why we're so unique. Even ang mohs can't speak their language properly. Uncompetitive? give me a break...
@nenekkucomel You gotta understand the speaking tone and the accent in your country are pretty werid in a stark contrast to the emerging markets in Asia even in Latin America.
Speaking of which is Singalish is part of your culture, how would you explain your countrymen refer to people come from China as Chinaman? You've got to understand that here in the United States or in any other developed nations, It's committed a racial offense to target specific ethnic in such manner.
@nenekkucomel Yeah , if you all had seen "Are you smarter than a fifth grader?" then you would see how those ah mohs lack even the basic grammar like (she has/he is )etc. Aren't they ashamed of themselves since those basics are learnt in primary schools???
I am American, I lived in Sg for over a year working on YOG. Singlish is terrible in a lot of ways but I always support a local population having their own lingo. What most Singaporeans don't know is America is the same. Depending on what part of the country you live in and what ethnic background you have, you can have a variety of different accents as we call them. Singlish is actually very similar to the way Hawaiians talk. I can tell if someone is from Boston, LA, Texas or Pittsburgh.
Singlish is supposed to be spoken naturally. Not something to be forced upon as it will make it too fake. And it certainly is not just about adding 'lah' at the end of the sentence
@jc290092 "YOUR LANGUAGE" is even more embarassing to me .. hahaha a language full of hatred , anger , racism ... isn't it funnier that you're hating too much ...???
i saw this jc290092 leaving comments on some other videos related to "singlish" .and wow .. you really hate singlish ... you're too funny .. because .... it seems like you're hating on it soo badly ... you seemed very troubled and depress ... LOL .. its funnier when you actually leave comments on alot of videos related to it ... wow what an effort(for something that u hate ) ... in my opinion your language is much much worse to be compared to singlish ... sarcasm , hatred , anger , vulgarities
HAHAHAHA it's hilarious listening to the foreigners speak Singlish xD But to be honest, sometimes when I hear Singlish or Manglish (I live in Malaysia), I kind of cringe and feel just a little embarrassed. I don't speak Manglish, since I went to an international school from a young age and was English educated my entire life, but it's quite fun to listen to (I just don't really like hearing it in excess)

why should we "promote" singlish? Why should we let me "wrong" continue while we have the ability to be "right"? I love this beautiful country but singlish is really hurting our image. I do mind when people make fun of our english speaking becasue i know we could do better. We can start from school children, english teachers.....
i am with you. Most educated singaporean could write english well. i don't mind the accent, just.....proper english. Oh, I have heard some of the sch teachers use singlish in class.
Language evolves around the culture, Singlish is coupled with Malay, Tamil and Chinese because Singapore is a Multicultural society. Just and Australian English had aboriginal phrases. US English had "Yo, y'all" etc.
HK Cantonese also had a lot of English in it due to former British Rule.
This applies for all languages.
Don't let the media define what you should speak, language is for communication, so long the other side understands, it;'s good
Singlish is a good language to use in places and situations like war-fields and during emergency. It just speeds up the communication process and saves the time taken to converse the message to someone. Singlish is a successful language which cuts short the proper English sentences. Take an example for someone who is used to speaking in complete sentences. By the time he/she completes a proper sentence, they would've already been killed.
@mike7743 I just corrected you, nothing more. You said Australians needed an English lesson because of their accent. The English is fine, it's the accent you're worried about.
