Mark - I just had the opportunity to play a B-bender, and man I fell inlove with it. Im a ex-metal guitarist, and have finally come to blues/country styles of guitar playing, and man, watching gutiarists like you, it's just flat out inspiring! KOP! Keep On Pickin!
A b bender is a lever that runs from the ball of the b string to the front strap button, usually on a Telecaster. When you pull down on the guitar, the lever/strap button raises the pitch of the b string one whole step.
I just got the Hipshot B bender, G bender, and drop D tail piece for Christmas. I always wanted some kind of a B bender and I didn't want to rout out the body, so I had this one installed and its a lot of fun once I get the hang of it. Its on a Y2K Fender Telecaster Nashville, black with a maple neck. Sounds sweet.
Just so you know, I'm a 46 year player and now just discovering the joys of a B bender. I've always just used fingers to get some of the bends. Give me 6 months with it and I'll upload a video for you.
There are some good instructional vids here on You Tube. Also, Will Ray of the Hellcasters has a really good instructional DVD available. Albert Lee also has instruction available. Most of the licks I play on the Tele were found just messing around with the guitar. It takes a different mindset. What I mean is you have to think different when using the bender.
"mostly country on the tele" mannn you can get some beautiful blues crunch tone out of a tele, I prefer my les paul for blues, but i have a tele too that has some great blues feel to it
if you could do a demo using that ever so rare harmonic design ministrat pickup, that would be so amazingly awsome. it would also be the only video out there about the pickup.
This is one of the coolest guitars ever. I had never heard of the B-bender (well, I'm a piano player if that's any excuse) but this is a killer idea. This is top class jamming, once again Mark. Thanks for posting, and thanks to the other guy for his request.
I used to mess around some with a "b"-bender and all I did was frustrate myself so much I ended up playing pedal steel in a Country band! lol!! Thanks for posting all of your really fine vids...sometimes I get really busy and dont get a chance to comment but, I ALWAYS watch them and rate them high! :)
This is some good picking my man. I need for you to record Hootchie Kootche man and that Clapton song you played at the arts festival this year so I will have something to listen to when I get home late at night and still need to hear some music. See you at the Cruz brothers and friends blue door show since I am thinking you are one of the friends.
Hey Mark, can you do some more slide? I remember watching one of your videos where you played your strat and then played the firebird with a slide and it was great. Can you post another? Or aren't you a big slide player?
When I was gigging regularly I played slide in natural tuning most of the time. There were several songs in our repetoire that had slide breaks here and there. I played solos in open E on the Firebird very seldom. Usually on One Way Out or Statesboro Blues.
I'll try and post another slide vid in the near future.
