This subverts tonality. I doubt Mozart, Beethoven or Bach, and whoever has been mentioned, would have anything to do with this, unless you consider the fact that harmonic standards established by classical music can by defied, as such in this song. Structurally, I guess it's as progressive as some classical, and perhaps written with the same intricacy, but that's besides the point... It's somewhat like saying Leanardo Da Vincey would admire Dadaism.
@whatthemeh history showed repeatedly that standards are there to be defied..and (personaly always) i think that the composers you mention would admire this atonality
@JustOffer I don't know about Mozart, and I don't think he would listen to Black Metal (he's too classic, maybe Beethoven would) but indeed the geniuses of Deathspell Omega compose, dark, unique and purely artistic music.
this music was made against stupid followers and brainless slaves. its not elite stuff. its hate stuff. deathspell o. , and watain and teitanblood are the best bm bands of today.herr bons geh mit deim primanerlatein aufm absurdkonzert prohlen , du bauer. wir ächten trve bm freaks hassen solche klugscheisser wie dich. wette du bist rechts.verpiss dich aus unserer szene.
It certainly takes a getting used to. I am a metal newbie so to say, though I occasionally picked some things up when I was younger. I like chaos of this piece, especially towards the end where it becomes one big blur of chaotic noise.
I always try my best to listen something out and see its value, and I think I might like some of these pieces. Hell, I've learned to like 'metal machine music' from Lou reed. This should work out for me as well ;)
There is something truly special about Fas. It takes alot of work and listening to get what the album is trying to give, but once you begin to comprehend it, it's amazing. One of the rare cases where a lesser sound quality actually helps out. This album rises above the sea of mediocrity and garbage that is the "underground, cvlt" black metal scene. Great ideas, great talent, great execution, and genuinely dark message. Only other band that comes close in this regard is Xasthur.
"One of the rare cases where a lesser sound quality actually helps out"...your spot on right there! To many of my friends who arent black metal fans like to take digs at the "shitty production" and refuse to see that a truly great band can use a less polished sound to their advantage and create an atmosphere within the music that you'll never find in any over produced garbage.

wtf is up with that.. I've got a great knowledge in metal but that is just like annoying noices. probably reaally difficult to play but sounds terrible. can't really hear any music out of this. what is this genre called? or does it have it's own genre <.<
you just made my day xD "i have a reallly great big knowledge in metal, but I don't know this genre and it totally sucks cause it's not in flames" lol
Dude, you're retarded. I doubt you know shit about metal if you don't even know that Deathspell Omega is progressive black metal. And it may sound terrible to the untrained ear but to those who understand the atmosphere of the music it sounds wonderful.
guys check out exiled archangels from rotting christ, that some kickass greek black metal, rotting christ, although not so well known like mayhem, were one of the starting bands of the second wave of bm after celtic frost, venom etc
i like some scream like alexisonfire, killswitch engage and mudvayne but this is too heavy lol. oh well, i tried black metal and i know not to go there again lol
That depends on how you define bm. Many trve bm-bands aren't real black metal anymoreat least that's my opinion. This genre is about doing something different and still extreme, not trying to be the most grim and raw dark throne or burzum clone.
The genre can be expanded in many ways that don't break or transcend the overall aesthetic of black metal, but myself (and many others) feel that the aforementioned works do exactly that. I think bands like Emperor and newer DsO have their hearts in the right place, but it's too frivolous and pretentious for me. Subtlety is much better than blatant "genre hopping".
Don't mind me much though, I made the comment just to be a dickish devil's advocate :P
@ludmac7 agree with him. I was never a fan of this band before this album, THIS is were they made their own sound. Not copying the gay Norwegian scene.
No way. The vocalist is Mikko Aspa of Clandestine Blaze, Grunt, Creamface, Fleshpress etc. Hasjarl (formaly of Hirilorn) plays guitar and Khaos is the session bassist.
The drummer may be Yohann from the death metal band Mutilhate but considering that Hirilorn fell out with him a few years ago I'm not sure whether DSO would want him playing on their albums. Just a guess.
By my point of view musical works of Deathspell Omega are a new way to percept music.. it's something of more, an elitaristic expression (musically, thematically and lirically spoking) far by the saturated scene of black metal.
I think that "Fas ite" (my preferite) is a masterpiece like "Nattens Madrigal"..
I very like 5:46 3 seconds of melody

This band stands for what BM is all about. Being different, doing your own thing, simply being unique and extreme.
They are as good as late Emperor in my eyes.
ludmac7 3 years ago 4
The ironic thing is that neither 'Fas' or any Emperor album past 'Anthems' are black metal.
