Dear cheapskatepanic I really admire you for doing so much for your daughter. watching this video was quite heartwarming for me as a partially sighted person (blind in my left eye & 30 & vision in my right) your daughter looks as though she is doing amazingly well. seeing this makes me appreciate all the people that take the time out to care for blind and partially sighted people so thank you and may God bless you and and your family with all that is good for you <3
Love this. My daughter didn't start walking on her own til she was 2. (She got her cane somewhere between 12-18 months.) It's great to see your daughter going already. Before you know it she'll be a pro with her cane!
This is wonderful. My son is blind and just beginning to walk. I love seeing other blind kids exploring their world. (and I think she is doing great with the cane!)
this is cute <3 i have blindness as a hereditary gene in my family.........my dads blind......sisters son is half blind..........my cousin they fixed......but he is sensitive to light.. & my baby.. seems to be half blind in his left eye........seeing a specialist next month to see if they can fix it.........but thnx for this video <3....my dads been blind since he was 2.. he doesn't wanna see he gets offended when ppl ask him.. hes been that way all his life..
You are evidence that amazing parenting is about love and faith in your little one, your baby is adorable and you are inspiring. Thank you for posting this video
It doesn't have to be perfect technique to be beneficial.
We were told it would be detrimental for our son to use a cane. We got him a cane anyway. Seemed a lot more detrimental for him to want to stay at home because he was afraid of unfamiliar places and to stigmatize him by making him rely on holding our hands all the time. A few months ago he turned to me and said "You know the best part about using my cane? I can walk and talk at the same time!"
I am an O&M instructor for kids and I am so proud of you mom for ignoring the "so-called" experts and making the choice to use a cane! I am 100 percent for giving a kid a cane as soon as possible! Please ignore Miss Ambrose, she may be a leader in the field, but she obviously has no real clue what's best for a blind child! Kudoos to you for giving your little girl her can so early! It makes me feel so happy!

Great job, Mom! As the mother of a blind little girl myself, I have also encountered my share of "experts" out there who are well intentioned but simply don't know what they are talking about. Living 24/7 with this makes one a real expert! You are enabling your child to be confident and independent, keep up the good work!!
One day I'll be a parent, and although I've never thought this, I am very grateful for how my parents have brought me up. Its only when you look at it from another angle do you realise just how hard they have worked for you... Sorry to have stretched this comment out...But this video has truly been a beautiful experience.
I just can't come up with the correct words to match exactly how I'm feeling right now. Its an odd sensation of joy and being proud for this little baby and her mother for embracing her blindness and doing everything possible to make sure her little one never feels left out. I am very proud of the progress you have made with your child. I hope you continue to make further progress as time goes on and enjoy those little moments that make you proud to be a mother.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who opposes this O&M specialists opinion about young children and cane usage. Wow. And who asked, right? My son has had a cane since he was 1.5 and his first use of it was just familiarizing himself with his environment. He did not walk until later, but we wanted him to be familiar with the cane. To understand it as an extention of him... If children can see, we do not all of a sudden give them legs at age 5 and tell them, "okay now, walk."
That's exactly my point - it is great that she is walking and making you so proud of her progress- as you should be of course. But, my point, as a professional in the field of O&M and early child development, is that as you describe her cane use-the cane is providing a false sense of security to your beloved. When used incorrectly the cane can't provide the protection it was designed to - the AMD can't be used incorrectly - it is easy to be able to move safely and learn- just push and go.
Little girl is cute and her mother and big brother love her. But, this is another example that toddlers are too young for canes.
She is not using the cane as a probe -only holding it out to the side. The words hold your cane "in front" and "swing your cane" are not understood because that is too high cognitively for toddlers. It is age appropriate that she doesn't understand those terms.
Let toddlers walk with AMDs and interact with their environment lose the "cane chatter".
Wow, that is so sad. You are so wrong. She was just learning to walk so of course she isn't using it perfectly. She was 13 months. She did even at that time understand what the concept was. Now at age 2 she has an O+M teacher that is amazed at how she uses a cane. She is the youngest he ever taught in his long career. She holds it right and keeps it in front. She finds walls and curbs with it. She doesn't know how to stay 2 steps behind it the right way but..SHE IS 2! Best thing I ever did.
@gambrosez gambrosez your'e so wrong in so many ways i dont even know where to start... God bless this baby and her mother. And if you can't say anything nice thatn don't say anything at all
@gambrosez That's how children learn, though. If we waited until they could do things before we let them do them, we wouldn't let toddlers have crayons or pencils until they were six or so, we wouldn't talk to them for the first two years of their life because they aren't old enough to be able to talk yet, we wouldn't give them books until they were in kindergarten, and so on... if we waited until they were old enough to do everything 'right' they would live pretty empoverished childhoods.
This is a great video. Kudo's to you as a parent. Your strength matches your daughter's. Although I knew she was as safe as can be, I got a chill as she approached the stairway. Kind of like watching a scary movie. :)
oh cute baby. when i was born they thought i was blind but i wasnt. i did have perfect vision til i was 6. i have had numerous eye surgeries. im 33 now and now legally blind i have glaucoma take care
So great to see this video of early integration of use of the cane into a toddler's body schema. Hurray! Whoever is working with this child is getting it so very right! Kuddos to you! (from an O&M Specialist/parent of a 24 week VI preemie now 20 years)
Hi,I have twin sons born on ROP stage 5&3, we consult docs frm many countries, went to Sydney & Michigan& they said its inoperable. Was frustrating. But we met parents with same case&were told to go for Chikung(Qigong) chinese healing treatment performed by a doctor and a professor. (no cost). After 4months now, instead of smaller &whiter eyes my baby can now react with lights! We met parents twins who've been treated for 2yrs can see now. Pls email for more infos. I want to help other parents.
@cbhutia hi this is RANVIR from India. I tto have a blind (due to ROP 5 both eyes) baby boy now 16 months old. Got one eye operated twice here in India at best eye hospitals/doctors but no success. Would you pls share the location in China or the internet site through which i can access them. my email Id is - ranvir777rkt@gmail.com. Pls do mail me so that I can be in touch with you. Thanks

Yeah, She has to get her balance and stuff down before she goes to that. Does she have O & M yet? I know they get around to little ones to even help them crawl forward at her age, so they ought to be overjoyed with her. (like we are)
Her balance is actually better than shown here because she is in her "footy" PJ's and really crabby. LOL. She also does much better with her shoes on to battle that mild CP. No O&M yet. I just switched to a new teacher with more experience. She starts Tuesday. I should have more of a plan of action with the new girl. You know what she said to me the other day? She said, "Hey, where is my Itoad!"
You go Little Woman, Keep it coming! Next step cane at belly button, tip way out in front (when she has better balance). Watch out ankles at that point! So glad to see her doing well
As she is starting to realize that she can "find" things with it she is starting to swing wider. To do this sometimes she puts it lower. I try but I don't want to mess with her too much at this age :)
