@MrSKINFLICK Have you tried the original 1960s Amon Duul. Not the modern reincarnation Amon Duul (UK), or Amon Duul 2. You may like them, very experimental and off the wall. I love them but a lot of people I know find them hard going, but then again, I find stuff like aerosmith, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Van Morrison and Van Halen very hard going, (boring) lol
Doubt it, but interesting theory. Check "The Sex Pistols"(1978) by Fred+Judy Vermorel (former art school friends of Malcom McLaren) - the New York Dolls influenced the Postols a lot - without them being into heroin or drag queen clothes.Without wanting to dismiss Malcom´s achievements - he also seems to have finished the Pistols - Sid Vicious must have been his idea - they switched off his bass on stage...
But Pere Ubu, Tuxedo Moon etc etc - legions of bands said they liked Can....
@MrSKINFLICK wow . late reply but .. similarity between anything by Sex Pistols and anything by New York Dolls = non existent. Similarity between Sex Pistols and Neu! Hero = uncanny.
It helps if you actually listen to the supposed influences.
McLaren was an ignoramus with music. He had nothing to do whatever with the music of the Sex Pistols.
@WizardofFuzz i think, at the time in the UK, krautrock was a welcome alternative to the pompous, mega-wealthy overblown stadium rockband thing that developed. That is, until punk came along and took krautrock's place. I don't know if it caught on in the US as much as the UK. ... and according to a documentary ( "Krautrock, the Rebirth of Germany" ) krautrock wasn't as popular in Germany as it was in the UK. Germans generally seemed to be more interested in the big US-UK rockbands.
@WizardofFuzz that's so sad to hear. unbelievable. myself i asked some german people that i have known in my life and yes, indeed nobody ever listened or even knew Can, Faust or Cluster. Only Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk but for their latest works. Cheers, a Can fan from Portugal
@WizardofFuzz I had can records in the 70's in the USA as a teen but I was always aware of the best music much much more so than most. My art teacher let us bring records to class and play them, I broguth Can Soon over Babaluma..I love German music such as Kraftwerk, Klaus Nomi, Rammstein and Erich Kunz
@explosions49 i've found once in a can fan blogspot an album called "Future Days And Past Nights (Live)" they play Bel Air and mix other FD songs with others...very nice
@explosions49 I should think "no" as Damo Suzuki left the band after this album. I saw his solo act live n Nottingham 2005, followed by London 2007. Great both times, on the latter I asked him if he did play Can songs and I got an angry look! A resounding "No", then,
This era of music was brilliant and I was so glad I was around for it. I never called it "Krautrock". That name came form the Brits, they hated it, basically and didn't take the music seriously. For me, that name is a slap in the face and I don't use it. For the record.... Holger Czukay who played with CAN had huge fights over this album. He believed the percussion was too loud. Holger and I are good friends and the subject came up once between us. We have collaborated on a few things.
@explosions49 I would lean against it, they may have played it in some form or another through the years, but Damo left the band after/as this album was recorded.
the latter part of my teenage years were spent in adoration of these guys and krautrock/kosmische musik in general :D krautrock as a movement has to be the single most important event in rock music :)
I'm tired of hearing people comparing Can to Neu! The idiocy of American music journalists, putting everything in their little space&time boxes when it comes to Europe. Fuck that.
About ten years ago, a man compared one of the songs I had written to Can. At the time I said, "who?" Now I realize that that was one of the highest compliments I'll ever receive.
There have been times in my life when i have had this album on repeat all day, today was one of those days. This song simply blows me away everytime. Where is the next CAN coming from?
Could we get A N Y T H I N G from the "Can" (1979) album on YouTube?!? Puh LEAZE! Dürfen wir bitte Auswahl aus 1979 Album "Can"? 私は"オープン"1979年アルバム"ことからのすべてのゲートを聞くことを望む"してください。הייתי ממש נהנה לשמוע "כל השערים פתח" מתוך האלבום של 1979 "האם", בבקשה. ÉN akar igazán élvezni meghallgatáson "Minden kaput nyit" az 1979-es albuma, a "Nem", kérjük.

Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit were the Sly and Robbie of the past, just wonderfull for this time ( 1973 ). They are the one of the most influence roots of modern music, for example Massive Attac
the last 30 seconds got me, when i was 12 and heard this the first time. the song seems to slip away and came back with this haunting drums. phantastic. it made me a fan for their music my whole life.
.. it's like, thousands of years after the end of humanity, aliens explorers will descend and search the overgrown remnants of our civilisation and discover a scratchy vinyl Future Days. .. and this is what they'll hear.
@pinocchiosfurniture - for some dumb reason, Neu! totally passed me by til i discovered 'em recently on the BBC documentary.
from my recent soaking in Neu! - I think Neu! are far more consistently listenable and ground-breaking, and Can are more skilled musicians. Can's peaks are as high as Neu!'s peaks, but Neu! cast a wider net.
I saw that programme too, was great!. I've heard can before when I used to get yahoo music but dont own any albums, have a bit of Amon Duul II. Just ordered Can- tago mago and future days albums after being reminded about them. also ordered jane -jane III after hearing them on youtube. Im going to look into all the krautrock stuff.
I love both but I think they're very different, really. Couldn't say which one is the best. You should check out the album Flammende Herzen by Michael Rother (one half of Neu!). It's quite similar to the late Neu! stuff but with Jaki Liebezeit from Can on drums. At first you'd think it's Klaus Dinger because it's still moslty motorik beats, but if you listen well you realize it is subtlely more complex than Dinger's rythms.
Still, I think that this specific Can album is one of the most beautiful releases out there. I actually think that all their albums, up to this one are just amazing.
Neu! have one album which is really out of this world, and its the one released in '72. Though I really couldnt connect to anything they released after that...
@mijmijrm I have yet to be bitten by the Neu! bug. Can's really the only krautrock i love and listen too (after sampling the other fruits of krautrock of course) As far a consistently listenable goes, when it comes to CAN, i usually just binge on them a couple times a year. You may or may not care about anything Im saying right now. good day
@brotherbuttcrack hiya. Yeh .. i sorta go through waves of appreciation of the various bands. You can only go so far with Neu!, they only brought out 3 albums. (.. seminal stuff in there, tho) Can sustained their effort. I prefer their japanese singer period.
My fave Can track of all time.. ive tripped on lsd, psilocybin, mescalin, and maui...and HAD to have this with me every time...
