In conclusion a multitude of choices will always benifit the majority of society. Most people will find what makes them happy among all the choices out there and make those. Imagine if one day someone stepped in and said that from now on the only sport allowed on telovision is water polo. For some people that would be fine but for the others who like baseball, football, soccer, hockey, or basketball, this would be disheartening. Instead of looking at a micro situation look at the big picture!
@Wolfbrother923 yes,..but sometimes you got to get sick before you can feel better,... people shouldn't be happy,... being happy equals being dead,... i know it's abit radical,.but,..somehow it feels right :D
(personal happiness of watchin sport,..when some politician is fucking you and your country up and million if not billions are starving and dying just so one can watch sports) i think the world is far more interconnected and i firmly believe that economics is a zero sum game,..
Some imaginary choices are good. I learned while working in a hospital with children to give false choices all the time to build trust. Kids are often hard to work with because they are affraid of strangers. So during an exam we give choices like which foot should we check first? This makes them feel in more controll and helps build trust. In reality it doesnt matter which foot we check first as long as we get to both. So false choice can be good too it depends how you use it.
@Wolfbrother923 this is not the kind of "imaginary" choices i was talking about,... and also i really don't see where the false is,... if the child chooses the right leg you examine the right first,..so it's not imaginary,... what is imaginary is telling people that they can become rich and famous no matter what,.. if only they try enough,..and that's simply not true,.... some people don't have the resources to pursue a higher education and some are just downright stupid,...sad but true
Now imaginary choices are the tools of manipulators. A realtor for example might show a run down house with a high pricetag and then a good house for the same or even more and by comparing the too the buyer things they are getting a good deal! The job of the buyer is to recognize this blatant manipulation and expose it. Some people will catch on to this and some will not and the fault is just as much their own as it is the realtors.
@Wolfbrother923 well,... i just can't see it that way,... here the fault is entirely the realtors,..he's got questionable ethics,... it's like saying,... i fire a gun and kill someone and then say,..it's as much his fault cause he didn't dodge the bullet,..come on,...seriously?
The stress in these high impact situations is very good it prevents us from making a snap decision without analyzing all the angles. Some people find this difficult and will postpone the decision indifinitley. And simplifying the choice might help them. But reducing the number of choices will negatively impact the people who are will int ot take the time and find one of thses choices which is best for them. Why harm this person to benifit the unwilling?
@Wolfbrother923 what about inventiveness(hope it's the right word),... if you build yourself, as a preson(ality) only on the choices given,..well,...i guess you become a pretty boring person (not you personally, anyone)
Now when we do come across a new choice we judge how important it is and how much it will affect us in the long term. For a simple choice like whta to order off a menu there is little stress involved because lets be serious the choice is unlikely to have any lasting affect. This is normal and good because it allows us to put our rerves for mental work towards other more important functions.
First the idea that we make a choice about everythign everyday is not really true. As individuals whenever we come across a new situation we make a choice and then save that choice for future use. Therefore the next time we come across that choice (like with apples) we use a mental shortcut and follow the choice we already made. Think about how this applies to your own life; what clothes do you buy, food do you eat, route you take to school work or home, and who you hang out with.
First i've watched both the long version of the RSA video and the entire Barry Schwartz TED talk. My video is a response to the application of the Paradox of Choice principles to society as a whole which is the intended action of these videos. They use some interesting psychological curiosities to back up their claims. When analyzed in full these "Problems" with the way we think are actually INCREADIBLY bennificial to individuals and society! I'll explain why
don't get me wrong,...choice is good,..but too much choice is bad,... especially when a lot of choices are imaginary,...not feasible. don't you agree?
@thaumasein Now for the bigger choices like in the Schwarts talk like how to invest for our retirement or what career choice to make we generally begin to feel stress often in the pit of your stomach. Our minds realize that this decision is more important and will have much longer effects. Here we either have to devote the time and mental function to come to an informed decision which often involves developing some expertise on the topic or find someone we trust to have it already and get help.
some of them real (feasible) some of them imaginary,.... i think you would agree that it is harder to choose,... you can't try them all and then decide,... you have to decide a priori,... so your apples argmant somehow doesn't hold water,... also,..if you watched the longer video(not the animated one) she spoke of the difference between neurotic and psychotic people,... it is the psychotic who just know and the neurotic who question,... so you see who's in needing of treatment here :)
i think you're missing the point here,... in the rsa video the point is not about physical products but an more abstract one (if i may use that term in lack of a better one-english is not my first language),... ie a hundred years ago a person growing up could have let's say three choices in term of career (especially in rural areas),...idk maybe baker, farmer or fisherman,..and he chose what he liked or the lesser evil,... nowdays we have a miriad of choices,...
