It is an issue with the default audio setting on the disk. Go to your audio settings on your DVD player and select one of the other audio formats and you should have the sound. I had the same issue with my copy.

It's in the directors cut which I'm not sure you can get in the u.s. It basically has scenes where Matilda helps Leon work and has more intimate moments between the two. They were cut because they were seen as too suggestive even though they were perfectly harmless. Hope that answers your question.
