It's not the first car. It's the first combustion powered car. The first car was steam powered, most cars where steam powered in 1800 century until combustion engine came and became popular around 1920s and steam powered cars went out of production
"Most cars were steam powered in the 1800 century". First of all it's written the 19'th century or the 1800's, we're currently in the 21'st century. Second of all when you say "most cars" you are trying to convince us cars were commonplace, when in fact there were less than a handful prototypes worldwide with different propulsion systems. The internal combustion engine was invented in the 1860's already and made the most sense alongside electricity in the 1890's.
@McLarenMercedes I'm talking about cars not fucking weapon of mass destruction you imbecile.
Steam cars outsold Internal Combustion engine powered cars in 1910s and early 1920s when the Ford Model T was just getting more and more popular because of it's simplicity and it was cheap
"The internal combustion engine became popular around 1920's. " Utter nonsense.
They used gasoline powered combustion engines in the early motorraces of the 1900-1914 period. The 1906 French GrandPrix was all petrol driven cars. The 1911 Indianapolis500 too.
Have you forgot WORLD WAR ONE (1914-1918)?? All cars, trucks, motorcycles, airplanes, tanks, submarines were powered by internal combustion engines.
The Ford Model T was introduced in 1908 and it cemented the utter dominance
"Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot is widely credited with building the first self-propelled mechanical vehicle or automobile in about 1769; he created a steam-powered tricycle"
This is the first combustion engine mass produced car NO WHERE IN HELL THE FIRST PRODUCTION CAR. The first car existed some 40 years before it in Scotland and crazy enough it was ELECTRIC.
To be fair, the vehicle in question is a reproduction, as no Benz Model 1's are known to exist today. The reproductions that were made follow the exact specifications of the first automobile, though.
@prplepopsicle WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I MENTIONED THAT THIS CAR MAY HAVE BEEN THE FIRST GAS POWERED AUTO, BUT NOT THE FIRST AUTOMOBILE. TRY READING LEFT TO RIGHT YOU DISFUNCTIONAL MORON.
@CHOPMOP10 Not very fast! Only 15 sec. for a 100 meters and 60 sec. for the quarter mile. Many junior high kids run this fast. (And guys in their late 70s!)
@NicoQQ89 Wrong patent date makes no difference: Siegfried Markus built 4 cars in Vienna during the 1860s and 70s, one can still be driven by its own power, but they were not put into production. Trevithick's steam vehicles were used on the roads from 1801, and there were many other steam cars and coaches. Cugnot's Fardier was in 1769. Steam cars were regularly used up to the 1930s and accepted as "cars"; a "car" is not defined by the type of engine.
you said Siegfried Markus invented the first gasoline powered car and that´s not true he did this after Benz, Daimler and Maybach it is a very famous misinformation because of the wrong date just read it up
that there were other means of transportation before the modern car does not make you right
@NicoQQ89 I HAVE read up Markus was ahead, but It's irrelevant anyway, either Leonardo da Vinci's clockwork car, or Nicholas Cugnot's steam one represent the first cars, and many other people had working vehicles before MB, MB were first to go into production. That's good enough!
@nawzy202 No, Ford was about 10 years later. In UK there was legislation covering self-propelled vehicles (coaches, cars and wagons) for about 30 years BEFORE the Benz. Siegfried Marcus was credited with making the first 3 gasoline/petrol powered cars, but during the Nazi take-over of Germany his name was removed from all records and replaced by Benz. Benz was the first to make cars for sale, they should be happy with that.
the very first self-powered road vehicles were powered by steam engines and by that definition Nicolas Joseph Cugnot in 1769 ...the 1886 benz i believe it was the first gas powerd car but not the first car ever...steam cars were in the 17 hundreds
The cugnot was a STEAM powerd car the velo was gasoline powerd so probably what they mean't was the velo was the first Gasoline powerd vehicle although thats probably not right either
I thought the Cugnot was invented as an atilliery carriage...not a car in the modern sense as it didn't carry people. It was steam powered and I don't think it worked very well so he shelved the idea...maybe wrong though
We are at a time in history 100 years down the track where the excitement of Karl Benz, Henry Ford and his Motor Car, Alexander Graham Bell, Guglielmo Marconi, Thomas Edison and his wonderful inventions & others that paved the development of the 20th Century has been reinstalled into the hearts and minds of those engaged in the development of technology passing into the 21st Century.
Technically the first "car" was made by Nicholas J. Cugnot in 1769. It was the first "Self propelled vehicle".

@M1GARRAND1 ----Auto or Automobile whats the difference?
You said that this car was the first powered auto, but not the first automobile?
Really? what is the difference between and Auto and an Automobile???
Etienne Lenoir in Paris in 1860 and drove a car from Paris to Joinville in 1862.
Lenoir had a separate mechanism to compress the gas before combustion.
In 1862, Alphonse Bear de Rochas figured out how to compress the gas in the same cylinder in which it was to burn

Nope, only mass production though the assembly line principle.
By the time Ford started in 1903 there were several dozens of manafacturers of cars in the world.
Ford wasn't even the first American car manafacturer.
Oh, and GOOGLE is your friend, so therefore you don't need to ask others, or assuming something out of thin air or word of mouth.
