  • nice video and sexy accent!

  • tks this video really helped

  • Aussie?

  • @cyclopse50 - Yep, you pegged me. :-) Been living in the USA since '98 so I have some Yankee twists in my Aussie accent.

  • My first 125 cruiser was N / Gear up. not 1 Down / 3 Up.

So if i was in 4th gear and i had to shift down to 2nd or first, it was by pushing it down 3 times.

Click, Click and Click. Its a nightmare of a first bike, i didn't bother riding it on the road untill i mastered the clutch in all gears. And worst of all it was a Kick Star bike, so stalling it at traffic lights was always fun.

I also learned the hard way about bump starting

So i often do that now, 1st gear and give it a push turn over.

  • Very informative, thank you. I've just recently purchased a Honda CBR 125R as my first bike, setting my cbt within the next few weeks. I can't wait to feel the freedom!

  • Great video, voice and bike. =)

  • what you filming with?

  • @Jord4ntaylor I used a Fujifilm FinePix z20fd compact digital camera (with movie mode) for this. I have another video on my helmet cam setup with this camera. This was a few years ago - I'm using a GoPro and audio now.

  • hiya i was thinking on buying a yamaha xvs dragstar 125 for my first bike do you beleive that this would be a good idea ?

ive got a budget of around 1000 pounds do you reckon i could pick up a good one for that price ?

    write back :)

    Gary

  • @GRSTAFFY - The xvs 125 is a nice little bike, gets good ratings, looks good too! It seems like a good affordable, reliable bike to learn on, and should have enough oomph for city and commutes. Open highway it could be underpowered but most folks say it'll do 60-70mph. Most folks say it rides bigger than 125. As you get more confident, you'll outgrow it. I've heard that the $1,000 - $1,500 pound range is the norm. Cheap to fill and good mileage. Good luck!

  • @Drino1969

    hey thanks alot :)

  • great video thanks a bunch deffo will help :)

  • G'day, Great video, I am a beginner in motorbikes and like the traditional style and great looking bikes with character. What is your bike? I like the idea of the floorboards and heel and toe shifter.

    Thanks

  • @jogMERLIN1991 G'day! Yep, floorboards are nice. This was a Yamaha VStar 650 classic. The 1100 has floorboards too, but you can add them to most cruisers. Have fun and enjoy!!!

  • Very nice video

  • Hello Drino: I'm going to be taking the motorcycle driving test within a week and I have a question to ask. I have a Honda Shadow VLX -600 1992 model and my question is how fast should I be going on the bike to change to the second gear and than the third gear ass well. Thank You.

  • @gkkhan - Glad to see you're taking a class! The Honda Shadow is a good beginner's bike. :-) On a 600 the shift points might be around 12-15 mph into 2nd, and around 25-35 mph for 3rd. If you have an owner's manual, it should tell you. I'd suggest not getting hung up on speed - listen to your engine. The tone will tell you when to shift. In the class you probably won't get into 3rd. There are times you may want more torque in a lower gear at higher speed (e.g., cornering). Listen to your engine.

  • @Drino1969 - Thanks for replying back.I have another question to ask. I have a 1992 Honda Shadow VLX - 600 Motorcycle that I purchased it years ago and always thought that my bike only has three gears, now I'm finding it might have six gears and that most cruiser bikes have 6 gears, is that true and could my bike have 6 gears instead of 3. When I purchased the bike it didn't come with a owner's manual. Whatever information you could give me will be most helpful, because you know more that I do.

  • @gkkhan I think your bike has 4 gears, chain drive. The number of gears depends on the make and model of bike. My VStars (650 and 1100cc) had 5 gears, my Victory (1,731cc) has 6 with a true overdrive. Apparently the VLX rides well at around 55mph, though you'll probably get some vibration and it'll feel like you want a 5th (or more) gear. My 650 VStar did this. The 1100 less so. The Vic purrs along at 80mph in overdrive and could do much more. Good luck in your class, and enjoy the ride!

  • wtf would a woman know about bikes lol

lol im only joking, im sure your very good in the kitchen

  • thank you!!! you're a babe, i live in the middle of no-where and knew no-one who rode bikes at first your video is clear as hell thanks for simplifying it ^_^

  • how do you when to change up the gears?

Is it based on the rpm?

  • @alehax27 when you're used to riding you'll know easilly but the noise gets to a climax and when it's loudest/sounds most powerful pop gears if you didn't change gear at the right time the engine will splutter or sound less powerful, it's just getting used to it

  • hey,

    - pull in the clutch / get on the brakes

    - downshift a gear

    - blip throttle & ease out clutch

IS THE ABOVE A CORRECT METHOD OF DOWNSHIFTING??

    thanks

  • *****when you said back off the throttle do you mean completely or just a little bit?*****

  • thats different from every other bike i ever used,

neutral is always half a click up from first

  • Very nicely narrated and explained, thank you :)

  • Hi Drino, I bought a bike yesterday I got a 98 Vulcan 1500 classic , and your video helped me cause I was able to ride around in it for a bit in first. Next weekend i want to get up to at least 3rd. Your a lifesaver!

  • @redneck500 Congrats on your Vulcan! Can I suggest doing a MSF course too? They teach you all the fundamentals to keep you safe - cornering, braking, swerving - everything you need on your first ride on the streets with crazy cagers. :-) Keep safe and enjoy the ride!

  • @redneck500 Yes I want to go to the MSF course. Do you know off the top of your head what they charge?? btw.

  • This video helped a lot, I want to get my first motorcycle and I was thinkingof a new YAMAHA YBR 125. Thanks for the video.

By the way, nice bike the one you have.

  • @njordhrsdeath - Good luck on getting your first motorcycle! You'll be addicted in no time. I really recommend you take a class e.g., MSF. You'll learn skills that will keep you safe immediately. All the best!

  • Video is Riding from Crown Point to Multnomah Falls, a video response to this one.

  • G'day - my brother-in-law has a Vulcan 1500. Haven't ridden it, but ridden with him in group rides. A big, powerful bike with probably the most comfy seats I've ever sat in! He rides mostly 2-up and the bike doesn't even seem to notice. It's a nice ride, and he loves it. I have a vid of a ride when I was on the Yammi 1100 and he was in the lead on his Vulcan....

  • Have you ever rode a Vulcan before? Im thinking about getting one and you seem like you know a lot about bikes. What do you think?

  • you got a sweet voice, where are you from friend?

  • @redneck500 :-) I'm an Aussie - but have lived in Oregon since '98. So I have a bit of a blend of both accents sometimes. When I go home to Australia to visit the accent gets really strong.

  • well i like you :)

  • great video

  • do i have to off throttle first then clutch in when shifting to higher gear? or can i do the both at the same time?

  • I roll off the throttle a split second before pulling in the clutch. If you roll off the throttle too soon you'll slow down (engine braking). Too late and RPMs will jump (throttle still open but clutch in). You'll be doing 3 things at the same time - roll off throttle, pull in clutch and have your toe under the shifter ready to shift up. This can all happen quickly - shift into the next gear and accelerate away in around one second. Take it easy to begin with and play with timing. Good luck

  • Your accent is awesome.

  • nice bike

  • Thanks alot :)

  • Great vid! just watching for fun! i have a Virago 400 its a great bike, still yours kick mines ass lol but still its great to ride!

  • Hey, the Virago is an awesome bike! Doesn't matter what you ride, so long as you're out there riding and having fun!

  • lol definitely !

  • hey what happens if you start a bike when its not on neutral, also if my bike has a kick start and I dont wanna use the key how do I turn it off?

  • if u start a bike when its not in neutral and you dont have the clutch compressed it will jump and die. Its the equivalent to popping the clutch. And your bike should have some type of kill switch on the bar

  • @MagnumPI4 oh ok thought so. and yeah same just wanted to make sure. :)

  • Great lil reminder of how to ride a bike before i get my first moterbike tommrow .

  • Congrats on the new bike! Ride safe, and enjoy it!

  • I thank you for the informative video, my girlfriend is new to shifting/stick shift, so us getting a dirt bike soon it is a big help in order to help her learn about changing gears despite causing a bit of motion sickness with all the camera movement as you were going down the street!

  • Excellent and simple video, really cleared up some issues in my mind.

  • Thanks a lot. Im gonna do my CBT in the next few weeks and I just thought it would be a good idea to learn the basics before I do it. I was intimidated, and i guess still am about changing gears while riding but you have made me feel MUCH more confident and your teaching is easy to understand especially for people like me who have only been on a motorbike once and that was just sitting on the back

I plan to get a 125cc, due to age restrictions and stuff. Maybe getting a gilera Cougar 125cc.

  • Good luck on the CBT and getting a bike. You'll be surprised how much you'll love it, and how quickly you'll gain confidence. You'll wonder why you didn't do this years ago. All the best...

  • For a girl i must say you got a BIG bike...Im not being sexist i just exoect most women riding 250s...Who am i to talk im getting my license soon so i need one that size or even 125cc

  • Awesome Cheers for that. Was always something that left me confused but you made it really easy to understand

  • Thank you ever so much, a real help.
