I heard that this game's script was sent in to Capcom by a "FAN" of the original. I also heard that this fan paid Capcom to say it was canon and make his fanfic into a game. You can actually tell the story wasn't made by Capcom at all. (Note: If DMC4 had been made after DmC & if DmC had been considered canon, that game would have been shown in the history of DMC4 just because it shares the name Devil May Cry with the others.) Eventually, we will get a game that contridicts this game's existance.

The battle with Trismagia on hard mode is insane! I just wish Dante spoke more than just his cheesy one-liners. Not that I don't enjoy those. XD I have to admit, the whole "Don't speak-Just die." was really dumb. Lucia is so stupid when she fights Trismagia. Of course everyone is destined to die, idiot!
I think the best line he has is when he shoot Arius out of that window.

the voice acting is undecent at best, a child could come up with a better script, and I heard there were other problems concerning the actual gameplay

The first Devil May Cry was created to branch off of Resident Evil and as such, Dante was a tad bit more serious than his depiction in Devil May Cry 3. Please note, that after the feedback recieved from DMC2, the creators most likely went back to their roots and created a more sarcastic Dante for DMC3. Dante is rather invincible and as such has not much to fear, hence a more laidback protagonist. This is just my opinion though. =)
@zsnipe13 if its pure action, that depends. but you might want to look at the attitudes from spike (cowboy bebop) and mugen (samurai champloo) they are serious at times and other times not so serious, but they can be funny and bad ass at the same time. some people also like jin (samurai champloo) who is very serious. just create a balance of seriousness,bad ass-ness and jokester in the main character(s). the story also has to accommodate this as well.

2.) DMC. The official game with him as the lead, fights the corpse of his brother (Nelo Angelo) and Mundus (Lord of the Underworld). Finds the strange woman (Trich) is really a clone of his dead mother Eva.
3.) DMC4. The second chapter in the game (odd), Nero is in this one including Lady and Trish.
4.) DMC2. The future chapter, Dante is older and meets the enigma Lucia.
I think this is a dante who is reflecting on the events of the previous game, he had to kill his brother, thought trish loved him, then when he fights mundus she sacrifices herself for him, and then she comes back to be his partner. Thats a lot to handle and he's probably just going through a tuff time, and plus, ITS THE 2nd game! Someone said the cocky dante we came to know and love but its the second game, they were trying 2 show dante at a time where he was depressed but woudnt show it

Although there's something I don't understand, if I'm not mistaken, the time line is:
DMC 3, then 1, 4, 2
So Dante went from cocky and arrogant, to serious, to cocky and arrogant again, to emotionlessly serious.
