  • Where was Francesco Schettino when we needed him? ;-)

  • The skipper should have dropped the anchors way before he got too close...

  • Imagine if the engines blow at high seas...

  • I live near here; luckily the bay at Villefranche Sur Mer is extremely deep!

  • 0:56 RAINBOW WARRIOR!!!

  • Speed 2

  • Maybe if modern day cruise lines didn't try to make every dollar possible by unloading, reloading and leaving port in the same day with virtually zero maintenance these things wouldn't happen.

  • nice scenery <3

  • That's why the anchor should be clear for drop when approaching such a harbor. Same applies for every little sailing yacht. But the captain is a professional. He waited explicitly for more shallow waters. Probably it was too deep for the anchor further out.

  • They once called the cruise trade "carting cattle" .But if you ever seen the cattlle leave Darwin on board those "floating hotels" you could only dream.

  • ENTER YOUR TEXT HERE XDDD

  • @CybeRNooBzZ :)))))))))))))))

  • Nice boat drift! :D

  • "Enter text here"

FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME

  • That's just the captain doing donuts...the ship way.

  • How did I get from Nyan Cat to these videos, I will never know

  • The tug is Bourbon isn't it, or Flandres

  • i love how there's an advert for a cruise ship next to the video lol

  • Always carry a paddle

  • The cap dropped the anchor while being towed and snapped the cable.

Where do these guys get thier captain's liscense?

  • Thats what anchors are for?

  • Great Video! But Can you drift on a bike like us??? :o

  • Having also worked onboard with @dosedmonkey I want to point out that the reason "they didn't drop the damn anchor" is that Villefrance bay is 90m deep until very close to the cliffs - Island Star had tied up to one of the mooring buoys (which was standard procedure at Villefrance). Unfortunately the strong winds broke the ropes sending us drifting towards the cliffs. The anchors were dropped as soon as the water was shallow enough for them to hold and not simply fall straight off the ship!

  • 9 Beaufort is nothing! i have been on the Independence of the Seas Royal Caribbean experiencing 12! craazyy!

  • @khourykarim Hi there. I was on Independence of the Seas last month and Beaufort 9 was a breeze - but I'm interested in a 12, what was it really like..?

  • @m0mcx simple.... a hurricane near south of france....... they even prepared paper bags for people all over the ship .... you could feel the free - fall

  • The other thing to point out, even if the ship has propulsion, that is for moving forward or after, he needs steering and bowthrusters to get out of this situation where he is 90 degrees out of the direction of movement, I would hazard a guess it was the generators that were out.

  • In response to all those "why did they not drop the anchor". They did, the end part of the anchor doesn't magically stop a ship, its the weight of the chain afterwards on the seabed that holds a vessel, if the vessel already has momentum its going to take even more anchor, this is why it took some time to come to rest. But yes, they did drop the anchor, thats what stopped them.

  • This could happen and does happen to most cruise companies, there was no any injuries, and i can tell you as i worked with them for a while, they are more professional on there then many other companies. At the end of the day, if you go on budget cruise lines, the ships are older, non-diesel electric and so generally have less redundancy. You get what you pay for, and bad things happen as sea, she is a cruel mistress, thats why navy officers are trained to such high standard.

  • @Dosedmonkey Have you seen the Greek cruise ship for the coast of South Africa? The crew abandoned ship and left the passengers to take care of them self, they were rescued by a musician that got on the horn and send out a Mayday. They should have shot the captain !

  • @Tralgit The Island Star was previously owned by Greeks, who did a crap job, as usual, to look after her, this is why they had so many problems after taking over the vessel. Greeks are well renouned in the Merchant Navy by other nationalties as do as little as possible for the most profit types. ;)

  • @Dosedmonkey This ship was called the Oceanic, maybe it was renamed after the Greeks took over but what is most disturbing that the captain left the ship before the passengers, didn't send out a Mayday and just left them to die. The passengers where saved by a bunch of musicians playing in a band that was on the ship, they were English. Wonder what happened to the " captain " , was he shot or hanged?

  • @Dosedmonkey It was called the " Oceanos " and here is the link to the vid. v=9BFux2AAMso

  • Thank you for this! I shall never board one of their cruises.

  • well it looks like the anchor was finally dropped at @ 0:50

  • Dear old Villefranche! probably a Mistral blowing! it does get a bit breezy when that blows...

  • all ashore whos going ashore...

  • DROP THE DAMN ANCHOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • looks as though the ship swung around with help of the port anchor, heavy drifting for a cruise liner

  • la grand holiday? no no no la MSC cruceros es la pior que IBERO cruceros!

  • 9 Beaufort? Do you know what 9 Beaufort looks like? This is 4-5 at highest.

  • That was literally the most boring video I have ever watched on youtube.

  • @HarryCaray3000 It's not boring if you've ever been on a cruise ship. Or ever intend going on one.

  • i sat here for 2:45 watching a screen with 2/3 boats on it.. and i still dont know what the fuck happened

  • @williamtrevormcneil me niether what was supposed to happen?

  • @theitaliancutie2000 The cruise ship has dead engines, it's being tugged by the other boat but the cable snapped (2:24).

  • so why didn't they just drop anchor?

  • Ship's engines must've been made by GM or Ford

  • @Kreez8 MAN B&W actually.

  • you would think a ship that big would come with oars. :-)

  • ? whats the big deal? i dont see anything but a ship in the water.

  • lol

  • HELLO!!! Drop anchor maybe!!? Please tell me the multi billion vessel has an anchor!!

  • @Clennox79 yeah onto the sealife and reefs lol

  • 9 Beaufort storm? It looks more like a 6-7..

Maybe its harder in open sea.. but in this bay there is no 9

  • The same happened in my ShipSimulator2 game :D

  • Who cares about the smoke, it's obvious they didn'y have propulsion. The problem is tug should have pushed him out where he couls drop ALL anchors. Then sort out the problem.

  • Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?

  • sorry ,Harbor Freight isn`t the best place to buy cable........LOL

  • amazing 2 incidents in 2 months

  • This is the same ship that my wife and i went on our honeymoon. We also lost the main engines and had to "limp" into Nice's Bay. Then we got moved by lifeboat to shore (which took 12 hours to transport 2500 people 1/4 mile) Oh, and did i mention this is 2 months after our incident... way to go Island Cruises.

  • Wooh I thought it was gonna get its bottom scratched on the floor.

  • This reminds me of a memory that i once thought of. It was back in 1945, no actually It could have been 1956, Noo It was 1945, or maybe it was 1968 because thats when my dad owned his own Hot Dog stand on 38th and columbus, oooh he was very proud of his wieners, Funny story about the hot dog stand... whats the deal with Airplane peanuts??

    Talk to you later.

  • @Enlightenedones1 lol!!!!!

  • Doubt this was a planned mooring, ship is being blown ashore and into vessels at anchor. did not see anchor being dropped, perhaps on starboard. there are plenty of people on stern. if this was planned interested in name of ship line.

  • @trampolini1 Well put my son

  • "Uh First Mate?.....you can go ahead and switch off your radar now. Might as well save some fuel."

  • @JetMechMA Even with a APU it still has it's own engine... and if the ship or a/c has lost all power to mechanical system will work... unless you used a GPU but their out at sea lol.

  • This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion....er, a ship wreck in slow motion.

  • in soviet russia, chuck norris could of stopped the boat.

  • in any case why didnt they just simply drop anchor

  • look again how the tug cable snaps!

  • dead engines? Tug boats were doing their job anyway, and the ship is simply mooring.

  • He Was being Blown by the wind, Thats Why he dropped the anchor so the ship Would turn into the wind and offer less resistance,

  • He Was being Blown by the wind, Thats Why he sdropped the anchor so the ship Would turn into the wind,

  • There are no sand banks in that bay. in the middle it is 80m deep

  • @roymonaco dont you mean sand bars? im not being a smart ass im wondering if theres a difernece or if theyre jus called sand bars in the south.

  • did it get stuck on a sandbar?

  • does that capitan knows the anchor

  • There is one of the biggest of France next to it and tried to pull with a thin cable that ofcourse snapped at first try. That's when it got tricky

  • where are the freaking tugs?

  • @SuperAnimalGuy Not really when you have no engines and only a couple of generators.

  • wow stupid captain forgot to put parking break on.. its not just for hills u know omg.

  • my doubt s when engines gone out durin stormy season in mid sea means wat s '' situation,,,,,,,,

  • He dropped an anchor a while ago, that's why the ship turned...

  • @dependantlividity Nice to see someone was paying attention.

  • Speed 2

  • stupid... why not before drop all anchors so ship can stop, what he wait so long time

  • @MadMladen They first tried to tow it (with a too thin cable)

  • The weight of the chain lying on the seabed keeps the anchor in the ground by the horizontal pull of the ship. When anchoring I like to put out chain equal to three times the depth of the water if possible, the anchor should dig well in but when the anchor is weighed, (pulled up) the windless hauls the vessel towards the anchor until the chain is vertical, then the anchor is pulled is easily pulled out as it has no grip if pulled vertically.

  • 0:05 ENTER YOUR TEXT HERE

    wise words, roymonaco, wise words

  • Speed 2: Cruise control - but side ways

  • That Captain was shitting bricks....

  • Some beach jumping!

  • Well, it was advertised as a beach jumper's holiday...

  • if u arent blind ud see the anchor is down. but there is only one anchor and its infront. therefore its spinning and dragging the anchor a little bit.

  • @Cruiseshiptime and if the bottom is sandy its really hard to get a grip. But here everybody is an expert you know....

  • is it like diffcult to drop down the anchors? o.O wft

  • all ashore who is going ashore...

  • NICE VIDEO.. "enter your text here" lol

  • Forget this stop full speed ahead back to the shop!

  • looks like a nice pace to spend the rest of vacation

  • Nothing like whipping a Huge sh*tty with a cruise ship. Doing donuts in the harbor. I've been on a bulk ship doing a manuver such as this.

  • I almost had fun while watching this video.. didn't quite get there though

  • Ship is just mooring outside of the bay because there is no dock available.... They do this so they could ferry the passenger ashore on tenders. Whats all the beef about folks.

  • @whataname01 Passengers had left the ship some days before, because of engine failure. Vessel was tied to a buoy, but the line broke in the strong gale.

  • tanga ung kapitan

  • dont worry nick the tugboat will you! lol

  • Im pretty sure the engines arn't dead for two reson first the turbulence in the water is not consistant with the wind second his exhaust is blowing diesel smog

  • @gnilrefues Generators produce quite some exhaust fumes.

  • @roymonaco In order for a generator to work the engines must be up and running... same principles apply to Aircraft.

  • @Ckymatt22: In order for a generator to work the engines must be up and running... same principles apply to Aircraft.

JM: Huh?....ever heard of the APU, Auxilary Power Unit?

  • As long as no one got hurt and the passengers got their moneyback.

  • @gnilrefues hes only got one engine working.

  • @gnilrefues The exhaust is not producing diesel smog.. That's the smog from the incinerator.. Every ship in the world has it.. All paper and some other trash is burn daily..

  • @nachube you may be right but how do you explain the water turbulence

  • @gnilrefues Well, when you move a ship that's over 100k tons, there's always a 'turbulence-looking' movement around. Of course I can't tell exactly whether there was an engine working (or even a stabilizer, which also makes little 'turbulence' around) or not, but it looks like the ship is power dead and it doesn't seem very stable. I play music on ships, and I've seen a lot of ships around, but nothing like this one..

Still, all I said before was that the smog is from incinerator.. ;)

  • @nachube actually, the incinerators on Island Star were never used during the day because the ash would fall on the aft passenger decks and upset the guests.

Whenever you power up generators or engines on older ships you will emit various shades of black / grey smoke for a few minutes - the excess quantities is most likely due to the engineers rushing to start them in a few minutes as opposed to the 60 minutes it takes to start them up normally.

  • @gnilrefues There's always some smug prick who wants to pretend they know more than everyone else.

  • @gnilrefues and sharks fart in water..

  • @gnilrefues The generators on Island Star are still very big medium speed diesel engines, 3300kW I believe, and are of very similar model to the propulsion ones, that is not that much smoke, and clean white colour, more evidence of irregular running, which is not surprising considering what is going on.

  • Dead engines? Look again....

  • the wind is pushing it

  • I don't think the engines are dead... I think he is just docking? Cause the tug isn't helping it's just watching lol

  • @Beamernator i think thats a coast guard bot but im not surte

  • There's nothing funnier to read than a bunch of landlubber morons attempting to sound knowledgeable-" The engines turn 360 degrees"......."can't drop anchor unless going slow".........you dickheads! Comment on the football or something instead!

  • @wavepiercer IMO theres nothing funnier than reading a sensitive navy boy moaning about something so stupid. havent you got barnicles to pick off your arse!!! who says landlubbers its 2010??? who are you captain jack sparrow?

  • @jordinio1O You might find that navy boy would have the barnacles cleaned off his ass by his " mate ".

  • @bunions4444 ...lol... good point.

  • I for one am hoping they didnt renew the captains licence... crap in hell!

  • the captain is such a retartd

  • @thebray1000 emm you seam to be the retard because if you had read the description the engines were dead and a a boat or cruise can olnly drop its anchor below a certain speed somthing like 4 knots im probaly wrong but i know its a very low speed

  • The z drive or bow thruster is probably dead

  • WHAT A STORM!

  • Dude the ships engines arent dead you can see the current they are producing. you know the engines can turn 360○.

  • how the engines die?

  • rofl....any1 herd of currents?? dont be smart about the winds.... look how strong the wind is..... its gunna do nothing to 4 massive propella engines...

  • high winds made the turn difficult but there is nothing abnormal about the procedure, and the engines were not dead. the tug was standing by to assist, but the ship dropped anchor perfectly. cruise ships must turn in small bays all the time, and it's amazing how small of a radius they can turn in.

  • Someone should tell the captain the ship goes forward not sideways

  • @Havixus Nope, they go sideways ;)

Most modern ships like this have propellors in the sides.

  • that's what you call mega cruise ship?????

  • What's happen on this video because I don't see anything XD

  • Perfectly executed turn using the anchors. One anchor was used to turn the boat into the wind, then the other was dropped. The water under the boat is nice and deep. Nothing wrong with the engines, you just can't turn a boat that big in a bay that small using the ship's drive system. The anchors are necessary.

  • Dead engines or not, there was zero excuse for not dropping anchor before the boat reached the shallow waters of the bay. That also would have kept the bow into the wind.

  • Looked to me like standard anchoring in high winds.

  • Then you really know nothing about ships!

Why do you think there is a ocean going tug going around the ship? And that is not just any tug, that is the Abeille Flandre.

This cruiseship allmost grounded on the beach.

  • This type of incident happens from time to time. Its not the end of that passenger ship. What hysteria. It is the end of one Captain's career, or maybe not?

  • maybe,Chief Engineers for sure...

  • "Enter your text here".

  • Lovely to say the least.

  • ive been on that ship lmao :P

glad i didnt know about this before

  • @DopeyD4vid glad you didnt know what? how they anchor the boat hahaha dumbass people

  • @MrJohndidder That it has nearly crashed into an island ... Cheer up , twat

  • the love"scare the s..t outa us"boat.....welcome aboard the love boat

  • Love on the rocks... Ain't no surprise...lol

  • This was a perfectly executed anchorage.

You can see how they dragged the port (left) anchor to put ship in the desired place.

After anchorage they let go the tug line (you can see the water splash).

    No one died :)

  • To me the passenger ship look "drifting", considering that I don't see prop wash under the stern I suppose they had an engine problem. The black tug is the "Abeille Flandre" French rescue tug, one of the most powerful in the world. The splash you see under the bow is not the release of the tug line but the release of the anchor chain from the passenger ship to give to the tug the possibility to tow out of the bay the ship and eventually anchoring again with the starboard anchor.

  • your right :)

  • To me as a Navigational Officer it looks like they had everything under control.

Coming into the port with pilot on the bridge. You can see the pilot boat on the foreground. Only one tug assisting (in the emergency there would be more).

Moreover, there was no whistle sounded. In emergency it should be one continuous sound signal.

You can see the wash from the propellers (engines are not dead).

  • god , how horrible

    :O :(

    that really is bad

  • All passengers were killed, I think

  • yea that certainly killed everyone.

  • the ship had a black out got all henys goin not long it it drifting every thing was all good

  • Lol lucky i not at the cruise ship whew

  • this is bay of "ville franche" in southern france. first bay east from NICE. apparently nothing happends, i am sea men and i newer heared about that accident, so there was na damage to ship or any pollution....

  • Not a storm and the engines weren't dead. Other than that a good discription.

Do people even watch the videos they post?

  • yeah this was a good video. not. one star. fuck you.

  • I hope someone takes you out of your fucking cloud cuckoo land and shoves a red hot poker up your ass you fat fucker of a FOOL.

    (In response to youknowoz)

  • What was that captain thinking when he entered that bay under those wind conditions? Thanks to the skilled personell on those other boats that came to the rescue.

  • drifting in a STORM ? that looks just like a sunny holiday !

  • @lakalakalokokoko look at the size and color of the waves...

  • @lakalakalokokoko yea but look at sea....

  • @lakalakalokokoko in fact it is a very windy day. the wind was force 9 on Beaufort scale

  • she is smoking a bit??

  • scary... thats not a very big bay for something like that to happen

  • It was like Speed 2 lol So Intense!!

  • It's like Speed 2...but slower
